so we are in a dilemma, I coach a high school varsity football program and am in first year and 0-8 and are very limited in amount of players. at this point we have 17 kids that will dress on Friday but the last 2 weeks we have been running into the issue of players coming when they want and not coming when they want ( yesterday for instance three starters didnt show to practice and again didnt come to school today and are not sick). do you play these kids and leave the impression that practice isnt important or do you make a stand and cancel a game to prove who is in charge..... help veteran coaches!!!!!

You're losing with them doing it their way. Might as well lose doing it the right way.

My answer is play the kids that come, do the right things, and have a desire to improve. Benched our DE this week because one of my assistants caught him vaping down the street from the high school. When I confronted him he lied to me. I had 25 varsity players tonight, 10 are sophomore/ freshmen. We aren’t winning with the starters, so I might as well play the kids doing it the right way.

If you have enough to play I would play. Otherwise you’re screwing the kids who have shown all week and the other team also. Roll them, run them, whatever, but punish them and move on. Play them only if you have to and it says the same thing.

the kids in question are supposed to be the leaders of the team as juniors and seniors, we have a starting quarterback that is a freshman that has taken that role on. We decided as a staff what many of you have recommended and are going to dress the kids but not play them unless we absolutely have too.

Bring up your JV and Frosh kids who are big enough and play with them. Bench the slackers.

I took over a team that hadn't won a game in five years when I first became I high school HC. Numbers were way down but we established a firm, strict attendance policy with the kids. It made for a miserable first-year and it came to the point where we had 9 guys coming off of the bench for a game. We removed a lot of kids from the team and also had our fair share of quitters. We finished the season with 12 kids and only a single senior. But, the ship started to right itself the next season as we won a few games and were actually a competitive football team. We finished the season with 15 kids on the sideline but we would've been at 19 if it weren't for injuries.
The whole staff felt bad for those kids that were showing up and working hard as we knew we'd be a better football team if we allowed the slackers to play. But, on the flip side of the coin, the slackers would have been taking a spot over one of those hard-workers which isn't right. It just sets a bad precedence for a program when you reward athleticism over dedication and hard work.
IMO, a poor program will never turn the corner if the inmates are running the asylum. Set firm attendance and discipline policies, enforce them and go from there. Your worst case scenario is having to drop down to a JV schedule for a few years and rebuild from there.

Been there had as few as 4 show regularly
Finish season as best you can, play the kids who show
Start looking elsewhere after the last tick on the clock of this season
