We use the speed based practice template during the season. Just during the 2-3 week pre-season we don't.

We do to a degree but for pre-season we accept that our players will be a bit overtrained during that time to get somewhat more speed endurance for the season. If we didn't speed train off season we certainly won't make speed gains in those 2-3 weeks.

Coach, I have a google doc. I can send of a sprint oriented FB practice if you give me your e-mail. I wish I could take credit for it but I use it as a template.

A weekly sample of a football practice or a track one? Our off season FB workouts resemble track practices somewhat. Or at least the more pure principles of Ross. I don't mind either way. I'm always tweaking stuff, though.

I've adapted Barry Ross' sprint training philosophy to football to a large degree. I also coach track so we really use even more of his philosophy. Unfortunately as 1 poster said, it looks like we aren't doing too much work. In short, I time their sprints (20's -80's-1 distance each day) and each kid goes until his time drops too much. Not below @ 3%. BUT they rest 5 minutes between each sprint and we rarely get to 10 sprints. 400 runners and higher might need more traditional intervals but they are then working sprint endurance. My sprinters, jumpers, vaulters, 110 hurdlers, throwers and football players rarely do intervals. They do up to 10 sprints until they have dropped too much time, 2-3 times a week and go home. (weights are always 1st) The other days are skill event work. Throwers throw every day. We aren't blazing fast but we clearly get much faster. It does take creativity to adapt it to FB practices. During the season we do need some speed endurance. Off season-pure speed work.

I'll go out of my way to recruit freshmen and sophs. Once kids are juniors I'm much less apt to actively recruit them unless they transferred in. Though the transfers we get usually got expelled from another school and came here. I also use the players to recruit probably more than I recruit. It's very tough in a small school, though.

I don't expect intense football stuff off season but I do expect proper strength training which helps everyone. If the sport they are in doesn't lift I strongly encourage 15-20 minutes after school before their sport starts to strength train. Year round. If their sport strength trains (unlikely) then great.

I've always said that I need 20 ATHLETES at least to be consistently competitive. Not 20 players, I need 28-30 for practices, depth, etc. When I was at a big school-no problem, more than enough. At my small school now, we had 23 players on our roster and @ 15 athletes. We didn't get much losses with injuries, grades, discipline issues this year but our practices were often 18-19 because of kids late, or sick or after school help. We went 6-3, losing to 3 state ranked teams. Great for a while but 2nd halfs against high numbered rosters were killers. Apples to apples we were great and this year lucky not losing the 5 or more that usually happens most seasons.

2 things. Blockandtackle-Practice plans became more of a tentative outline than a script. This has been absolutely true. At the more affluent, big school I was at for 20 years-we stuck to the script much more.
Also, making weights important brought lots of kids together (not all yet). This is my 3rd year and we won 2 my first, 3 my 2nd and 6 this season and qualified for sectionals. Strength levels have been clearly shown (recorded on a big white board in the weight room) to have improved drastically so a direct correlation. Plus they like being stronger than everyone else. We have 3 levels for anyone to achieve. Our colors-white, blue, gold. If they get white it's a T-shirt. Blue is a long sleeved shirt and gold is a hoodie. Many are very motivated to get "free" stuff just from getting stronger.

Block and Tackle and hsrose- I was going to say the same-are you coaching here? Numbers for football are hurting in all the small, rural schools. Many, including us, are trying to merge FB programs. That would help us tremendously. Fundraisers are tough just like you guys said. BB concentration is another area tough to battle.

We give out their letters or pins from years of playing but no other awards. I just talk about each kid. Some resentment from way in the past so we said no more. Nobody has questioned it. They can still get all league and seniors might get chosen for the senior game. IMO that's enough. Occasionally we get an exceptional young man who we nominate for the Black Lion Award. A national award coordinated through Coach Hugh Wyatt.

Just like CHI. Every family brings a pizza and drink. I get most of the paper products. Modified goes first. I call each kid up while my assistants give out his stuff. I say 4 or 5 lines on each kid. No MVP's or MIP's or any awards. Any seniors can speak-usually a few do. Thanks-goodbye. I have it during week 9 when we still have a game left. Makes it more of a pep rally than a funeral.

You can certainly split 1 or 2 with the DW. Maybe get the best of both worlds. I started splitting 1 this season but our QB just wasn't good enough to make that a real threat so we tend to go tight now.

We make adjustments on the weekly plan when needed because we meet usually for @ 30-45 minutes after each practice. The plan for the week is usually shared by the D coordinator or O coordinator (me) by Sunday with communication as needed. I like to know what the d is deciding but I don't micro manage. Sometimes Monday's meeting after practice can go a little longer but that's only if we are going against a team with alot of unique things. We end practice by 5:30 latest-usually earlier, so I don't keep the coaches a rediculous amount of time. We lift from @ 2:50 until 3:15 and go outside for @ 2 hours most. It does help to have a staff who has coached for a while and is knowledgeable @ FB.

Bob-Older kids are largely the same as the 11U. I do have to "get their attention" sometimes on Fridays.

We don't meet on weekends unless the coordinators feel they need to. Having kids and coaches with their families on weekends helps keep good coaches with me. Very little turnover wherever I've been at least after I got good coaches on my staff and got rid of the poor ones.

No I never had delusions we would win that game, but I had a problem with the AD's actions and expectations. It was VERY early in my 37 year career and it left a bad taste. Later as we became good, she would not have considered asking that. It was just an experience about homecoming.

Our school brings in portable lights for hoecoming "Lights Week". All the sports play a night game. I encourage them to support other sports but to leave early enough to get enough sleep if it goes long or starts late. Lack of sleep is one of our players main problems. Balance as was mentioned. We never meet on Saturdays or Sundays-never have, though we do have about half of our games on saturdays. I had an AD a long time ago that said I needed to cut practices short all week so the kids could coach the powder puff teams. We lost that homecoming game 55-0. She couldn't understand why I was upset at her that week.

If I was at a real big school and was getting great pay, I might consider evaluations. Not sure how much impact they would have on the kids I have now. They already know why they are playing where they are and at what string they are playing and they hear almost daily what they need to do to get better and they get challenged weekly to fight for or maintain a starting position. If you are like Chandler, AZ HS or some other top ranked team and these evaluations would help you get scholarships possibly, I think they could have value. I'm happy if any of my kids even play in college. Sounds negative but it's a small school perspective.

I'm one of the nameplates you earned by hitting lifting standards or hitting a high number of summer workouts. I have no problem with some having nameplates. If ANYTHING helps me get more kids in the weight room, I feel it's worth it. I've seen no negatives from it. It doesn't mean that w/o the nameplate you don't start. One year Kids were talking about coach bias which I feel I'm not towards who starts and I had a kid tell me I was biased towards kids who worked hard and did all of the workouts. I told him-guilty as charged.
