How long, hard, etc. do you pursue kids in an attempt to get them to come out and play? Currently at a school where sports is an afterthought due to arts being emphasized. But I hate losing so I'm trying to recruit whatever is left. I mean, I feel like there's a point where even if i get the kid to come out, what if the Sh*#$% attitude shows up (since I pushed so hard to try and get them to come out)? Literally like begging them to play. Would have been a waste of energy/time/effort...

You will retain those players more often then not and they don’t recruit the $hit heads because they don’t want to deal with it anymore than you do

I'll go out of my way to recruit freshmen and sophs. Once kids are juniors I'm much less apt to actively recruit them unless they transferred in. Though the transfers we get usually got expelled from another school and came here. I also use the players to recruit probably more than I recruit. It's very tough in a small school, though.

Until we check elgibilty. Most of the time kid has no chance to play ever due to academics. And kids who would be real size speed threats.

About five minutes. To me, the best recruiters lie and blow smoke up kids' asses and I'm not doing that. You either want to play or you don't.
Granted, we don't have very many good athletes to begin with and we're not really missing out on kids where I'm at. Maybe one per grade.

Any time I see an athlete with an injury that doesn’t play football I ask a question. “you know where you didn’t get hurt at?” That’s the excuse you always here is someone (parent, kid, whoever) is afraid the kid will get hurt playing football. I say it to point out the fact you can get hurt playing other sports. I’ll ask kids if they play other sports. I ask them how things work like practice and compare them to what we do. I’m careful not to bad mouth the other sports. I talk about other multi sport athletes I coach and the numbers game in other sports. Now I teach at the MS which makes a difference. I’m always talking but I don’t heavily recruit individual kids. It’s more joking around with them to get them to try it.

If I can't get them in the weight room I don't want them on the field. I encourage them to give it a try from November to the start of track season and then it is over. Once a week in the morning cafeteria time, once a week in the lunch room (each session) and once a week just strolling the halls during my prep.
Kids are better recruiters of their friends than I am or ever will be.

I don't stop. Kids just need a reason. Get your current players to help. Get them to a workout, we have spring we tell them to come try spring and got from there. This kid, took us until he was a senior to come out.... For him and us, glad he kept at it. Thought he was gonna be D1 in basketball. 247sports.com/Player/Deandre-Butler-46052396/
