Absolutely a hectic, crazy, and aggravating event introduced into the football season. That said, I have come to realize in my old age... that football coaches are in the very tiny minority that think that homecoming has anything to do with the football game.

School I work at, not coach at, had their dance last night (Friday) and play the game today (Saturday). Coach didn't even have practice yesterday since so many guys would be missing for all the pre dance stuff.

I just wish they involved the football team less. It’s for the girls. Our seniors had 2 pep rally’s yesterday and did homecoming sh!t all day. Guess who had their worst performances of the season???

I was once quoted in the newspaper when asked about Homecoming as "I hate Homecoming. And we play two of them."
We were a coop of 3 schools and 2 had the whole Homecoming {censored}. Parade, bonfire/rally, pep assembly, pre game {censored}. One year they wanted to have the parents go out and paint {censored} on the field, like their numbers and nicknames and crap. I, as the guy who watered, mowed, seeded, aerated and sprayed the weeds said no and they got super pissed off.

Embrace the crazy. Other than the fact that I don’t allow for things being scheduled that take away from our practice time I don’t care what goes on.
Homecoming parade? Cool. But it will be scheduled after practice and pregame meal Thursday.
Homecoming is a convenient crutch we as coaches and players fall back on. Can it be the cause of lack of preparation? Sure, it can. But that’s a choice we all make.

Literally my least favorite week of the school year but I honestly hated it when I was a player too.

My point was that everyone else cares about the activities, not the football game. Which would be fine if they didn't expect the players to participate in the activities.

My point was that everyone else cares about the activities, not the football game. I know it has nothing to do with the game. I know it’s a great experience for the kids and I would never want to deprive them of the homecoming experience BUT it would be nice on Friday if the players weren’t doing stuff all day. And we do dress up days all week and the kids are rowdy at school and I hate it....so there’s that also

If they want us in the homecoming parade they’ll have it when we can come. If they schedule it when I don’t want it we won’t be there. Pretty simple. Let that be known wary and as professional as possible and it works out. Now is probably too late.

I've worked in 8 different schools. You'd have got laughed out of the room if you told them that in every single one.

Homecoming Olympics, parade, float building, hallway decorations, community service projects are all top priority that week. Nothing else matters. Not even classroom instruction time.

Never leave the school you are at now. Seriously. In two different states and 6 six different programs, I’ve never heard of the HCs desires being taken into account at all for Homecoming Week.

Never participated in homecoming activities when I was a player, nor did players do so in a detrimental way at the schools where I coached. Not in Texas either.

I've worked in 8 different schools. You'd have got laughed out of the room if you told them that in every single one. Maybe you need to move to a school where they actually want football to be good!! Just kidding, I know our situation is rare but I’d have strong hesitations about anywhere that would force the football team to practice less because of something as trivial as homecoming. What makes a great homecoming? Winning the dang game!

What makes a great homecoming? Winning the dang game! This common coaching quote is what I was alluding to above. The only ones that really say that in this era are coaches. I don't think anyone else really cares.

I've worked in 8 different schools. You'd have got laughed out of the room if you told them that in every single one. At my first school the principal tried to write me up for not going to help build the parade float with the freshmen. They did it at 3:30 when school let out so right smack dab in the middle of football practice and I was the DC.

A couple of things: It may help to be at a big school. If our guys couldn't participate there were still 1000 who could. It's also helped that when we did this we were an established program. We put this rule in the year after our previously undefeated team got hammered by a previously winless team at Homecoming. In a new program I'd probably suggest it to admin, not demand it. Obviously, the other thing that you need is solid admin support.

We are a large school (@1600). My approach to homecoming hasn't changed since we were a 900 kid school:
-I dislike the pep rally, parades, pre-dance BS...always have, always will. Our pep rally is more of a "Fall Sports" event, so it's not singularly about us...which I like.
-Float building is our MAIN school homecoming activity (outside the dance and game)- it is CRAZY well done every year and is kinda one of our school traditions that we are better than everyone at...the kids take it seriously, as does the admin/teachers. The floats are ridiculously awesome...if you are into that sort of thing.
-It is VERY important to our community.
With that said, the best I can do is remind the kids that EVERYTHING outside of the actual game and dance is for FANS. We will focus on the game and our opponent- have as a distraction-free week as possible, and leave all that other stuff for the fans and community to do. We have to handle OUR part and they will handle the rest.
If the kids can balance it, it can be a fun week that they don't stress about. If they can't handle that (or you can't handle that) then put the clamps down.

This year's homecoming wasn't too bad. It was certainly a distraction in many ways but there weren't activities scheduled after practice that caused headaches. when I first started coaching, I worked at a school that had the following evening schedule for homecoming week:
Monday: Float building, right after school. We actually had kids asking if they could skip practice to go build floats.
Tuesday: Car/truck parade starting at 6pm. Everyone would deck out their car or truck and drive around town. We had kids whining that practice wasn't over early enough so they could drive around..
Wednesday: Homecoming dance. Yup, you read that right. A homecoming dance in the middle of the week.
Thursday: Volleyball game followed by snake dance, pep rally and a bonfire.
Friday: Parade starting at noon, ending at 1230pm and followed by another pep rally.

Our attitude was that we didn't want it to interfere with practice. What they did on their own time was their business.
