After reading this thread I am rethinking how we do this next season. We are a Co-Op and the other two schools usually show up around 4:00. Those kids get changed and don't get out to practice for the slow ones until 4:10. If we are starting our team stretch at 4:00 and finishing it at 4:10, they miss it anyways.
Our school gets out at 3:30, I am thinking of having the players meet in the weight room at 3:45 and we do a 30 min workout as our "Warm Up", giving the Co-Op players from the other two schools time to get there and into the weight room to get some pump on. Do some circuit training and a combination of olympic lifts. This would cover the practice warm up and get our team in-season lifting in. When we take field we can go right into an indy session or special teams.

I send out letters to their homeroom classes. I will create a database of potential "recruits" of kids on campus. I will put in some catch phrase words to personalize the letter, then do a mail-merge document and print-off the letters. I will print an envelope with their name on it and our logo, just like recruiting a high school kid to college. I'm recruiting a high school kid to high school. I approach it just like I did when I was coaching college football. If the kids respond to the letters I will step up the recruiting.
The goal is to get them in the weight room for the spring, then get them to commit to summer camp. Then you get the parents to commit to something, anything. Have the current players work them. I also make it a point to tell the current players in the weight room to bring somebody "New". When a kid tells me he wants to be part of the team I will put it in the morning announcements and welcome him to the family over the remind app. So every player, and parent knows this kid said he is part of the program. Then they start to talk him up.
It is truly a group effort, but in high school the boosters can help you recruit the on campus kids as much as possible.

We have all kinds of problems and none of the last 4 coaches that was allowed to run things their way has fixed any of them. Everyone one I talk to in person and on the internet can pick on this and that. The point out things that are wrong, which I could make a list that went on and on, but most of that falls on the head coach. Because at our school we have let them run things their way, but its not working. Everything I try to think of or do, everyone is quick to say they wont work. But no one is coming up with things to help, no one else is stepping up to the plate. I not the kind of person that gives up on things, I'm not going to give up on our school, program, or kids. Some not all but some people in our community just feel nothing will work. But put the right person/coach/leader in the role that will get to know the kids - Who will recruit with in the school - Who will work with boys - Who will implement a good weight lifting program. - Who will put the right kids in the right spot. - Who will use a blocking scheme that our smaller lineman can execute. - Who will run an offense that our less skilled backs can run. - Who will work with the Jr High and Youth Programs - Who will stick it out and be in it for the long run - Who will be a leader and set the example This is the kind of coach we need not a cocky guy that just say I will do what I want.None of those problems you listed has much to do with scheme. The school I just came to told me that nobody in the state runs a spread offense, you have to run to win. Problem had nothing to do with the scheme of the last coach, they didn't do any of the things you have listed above. When we took it over, we did all the things you listed above and more. But it all started with making the weight room and summer training not just there but something important that our program was based off of. Just look for a coach that is willing to put the work and time in, if he is going to run 100 QB sneaks a game out of the pistol, that is fine. Let him do his thing as long as he is doing all of the off-field stuff.

I guess the question is how much do you have to spend, and how long are they supposed to last? I just purchased the Nike Mach Speed Jerseys, which were like $160 each. But I am only allowed to get jersey every 5 years. So the $12,000 I spent needs to last for 5 seasons. If I were to spend $2400/year on jerseys, I would be getting low grade uniforms every year, and what if the administration tells me one year I can't order new uniforms? These Nike Mach Speed should last 5 years, I hope.

Why is running the wing-t a prerequisite to apply? I am at a very small school and run the EnZone system and have averaged over 48 points a game. Find a good coach and let him run what he is comfortable running.

That was last year, and I think I actually paid $275 for the Epics. I'm at a small school that needs to coop with two others, so no group buying power.

$1500 Helmets??? I had a hard time getting $350 Riddells and $300 Xeniths after the last coach splurged and spent $167/helmet. For $1500 what type of guarantee do you have that the concussions would be reduced? I had two concussions this season, and both kids were wearing Xenith Epics.

I've always wanted kids to do more than 1 sport. The only caveat was that progressive strength training should be done all the time and all 4 years. We do during FB-no maintaining. A "talk" I had with a wrestling coach a long time ago went like this. Wrestling coach to me-You should have all your guys wrestle, it will help football. I said-As long as they are getting progressively stronger on basic lifts, I'll even encourage them to. He replied that we don't have time for any lifting we need to spend all the time perfecting moves. I said-then I guess I'd rather have them lifting. He went ballistic. I laughed. OPINIONS? I think that conversation could be said with every other sport. Weight training is for football and takes away the fine motor skills required of all the other sports. Only way to combat this is to have the football coach as the AD and require every sport to have an in-season strength training program.

4 Total, doesn't matter offense or defense. And I pick them with input from the other coaches.

I was coaching college ball down in Arkansas. I was a GA at a D2 down there. I worked for a DC that was known as the "GA Killer". I was also in charge of the equipment room and travel logistics. On an away game to Georgia I started to load the bus at like 4:00am, after leaving the office at like 1:00am. I had everything in there. When we get to the hotel I realize I forgot to bring the sideline white boards. I called a taxi and went to Wal-Mart and bought two brand new ones, the old ones mind you were falling apart. After the first defensive series we are going over adjustments and the such, I am holding the white board and the DC is drawing up stuff. We get done and he grabs me by the collar and says "Don't you ever forget the white boards again or I will kill you".
Same season different game. We are down in Louisiana. We are doing our pre-game prep practice. I was responsible for having all of the depth charts and call sheets printed up and ready to go. Head coach is going through everything. We go through all the special teams and get to Punt. 1st team goes out no problem, then 2nd team is missing a few guys. Head Coach looks for the depth chart. The damned punt team depth chart didn't print off. Head coach calls me up to him in front of the entire team and rips me a new one. Then the "GA killer" DC rips me a new one behind the team and told me he was going to kill me when we get back to Arkansas.
I did learn a ton of football in those two years and probably had my life threatened at least 100 times.

We had a little more weight room time. Cut down on contact. Helmets only 4 of the 5 days. Conditioned more. Concentrated on execution and technique. Tried to avoid all injuries that occur in practice.

well I found a guys that will recondition the balls for $25 each. This is cheaper than buying practice balls. I like the sand idea. How would I get the sand in it? Could we also use water? Put that fix-a-flat in it and fill it with something else?
I also ordered the ball Doctor. $7 and the flat football was fixed.

Coachcb has it right. It all starts in the weight room and in the off-season. Summer 7on7 and team camps are huge. But I have learned that you can only be as successful as the parents you get involved. For the kids to buy in you need the parents to buy in.
Have an offensive and a defensive system that you believe in. Don't change it. You need to have a philosophy and an identity. I don't care if you are spread or wishbone, believe in what you are doing 100% and the kids will too.
In season I have team dinners every thursday night before the games(friday for saturday games). Parents make the food, this gives them the chance to be involved. Give out some kind of weekly awards. I also do some character education. Pick a theme for the week, talk about it before or after practice with the kids. At the team dinner I have a commander from the nearby Air Force Base come speak. This was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. I contacted their PR department, they emailed all of the commanders and asked for volunteers. We have a different commander come speak every week. The kids love it and the commanders are very excited to come speak to a high school football team.
Bottom line is you have to make the program about more than football. Once the players see you care about them as more than football players, you have won them over.

I purchased a Tek sled at a school I was at in 2010, best thing I ever used. Perfect for teaching zone blocking. You can use it as a lev sled, or as a push sled. Well worth the money.

I like the helmet. The customer service is crap. I would say the Speed flex is the best helmet out there, followed closely by the Xenith Epic.

I make it mandatory to watch 2 hours of film on HUDL on their own. We Coop with two other schools so it would be impossible to watch film of the game without drastically reducing our practice time. Plus it is difficult to watch film with High School kids, in particular at a small school. They can watch our game or the next opponents, doesn't matter as long as they are watching film. Position coaches will mark up our game.
If I was at a larger school or had a football period where I could teach the players how to watch film and not watch the game, I would do it everyday, our game on monday, the opponent tuesday through friday. 25-60 minutes a day.

I just ran into this problem head on. We were up on a team 54-22, then I put in my 2's and 3's, and the team damn near came back on us 54-48. They recovered an onside kick and I had to put the 1's back in on defense to secure the win. Then we were up 62-8 and made our substitutions and they gave up another 22 points and we won 62-30. So we decided that mondays and tuesdays we take the 1's into the weight room for 45 minutes with the me, and the 2's get extra work with their position coaches. Offense on Monday, Defense on Tuesday.

I am actually 100% in favor of reforming these uniform rules. I don't really see how there can be more rules for unifroms than there are for protective gear.

Last year I had five in 9th-12th grade. 4 of the 5 where to players that wore our old Schutt helmets, the XP. The other one was to a kid that is 6'5" and got a helmet under his chin, he wore a Xenith. I had no concussions in 7-8 grade, and they were all in Xenith helmets. In the off-season I looked into this problem to try and limit it. I upgraded our helmet stock. This year I only have a few players 9-12 in the old XP helmets. I have nearly all my players in Xenith X2E or Epics, and about 6 in the Riddell Speed Flex. I also purchased the Shock Doctor mouth guards for every player. We got 6 of those tackling rings and are limiting player to player tackling in practice.
Zero concussions at either level through 5 games. We had one player go to the hospital for a stinger. He is walking around with a sling now.

Don't get me wrong, our white on white uniforms are the best looking in the state. I followed all of the care instructions Nike shipped with the uniforms. Just thought that mud would come out a little easier. I knew grass stains would be a problem, looking back I should have gone with Maroon pants, I just thought the white on white would be very sharp. I have been washing these things with the most expensive stain removers I can buy and nothing seems to get the grass out of the knees.

I have Oxycleaned the crap out of these. So I am gathering that I needed to soak these thing the night of the game, then wash them after 24 hours? I was literally spraying shout on the jerseys and pants as the kids were taking them off in the lockerroom. I then washed them the next day. It says not to use bleach on them, and there is a sublimated maroon feather design on the side of the pants so I don't want to ruin that.

OK I am furious about NIKE right now. I need to know if it is me or is this company just going down the toilet. I ordered White Mach Speed uniforms, all custom, white pants and jersey. After the first game on grass, the uniforms are trashed. These things were like $250 a set, now all ruined. I shouted the stains in the locker room after the game. Washed them with oxyclean additive and the oxyclean detergent, 4 times. I even used a toothbrush to scrub the stains with the oxyclean. I am at a loss and now kicking myself for spending that much money on these uniforms when they are now ruined after 1 game. And I still haven't received the coaching shirts Nike was supposed to send me this summer for spending so much money with them.
So I am looking into all other uniforms. I also need to figure out how to get these mud and grass stains out.
Any suggestions?

I did an American Flag from the 40 to the 35 yard line. I didn't mean for it to get that big but it just ended up that way. It was for a military appreciation day. I think that flag might be there the whole year now.

I am asking about how many plays to have between the teams, I don't care how the other teams divide up their 1's and 2's. With 4 teams we will obviously have 3 scrimmages for each team. Do I give team 10 plays of offense each? 15 plays? Do I have Team A go offense vs Team B defense, then have Team A go defense vs Team C Offense? Or just team A vs Team B offense and defense then rotate teams?

Is there anybody that has any other formats for a 4 team preseason controlled scrimmage? How many plays should there be in each match up. Should we rotate teams every series or play one team on offense then defense, than rotate teams?
I only have one field to use.
