What have you done or what are you doing to ensure a successful playoff run?
I always tried to have fresh legs and as many healthy people as possible when starting the post season.
If I had a few good JV players, I would pull them up. On a few occasions, they were good enough where I could find a back up playing role for them.
I also tried to find ways to have "fun" as the practices can become redundant after a while.
Looking for insight to what others do in preparation of the playoff season...

Cut back on time spent on practice field, especially if weather is a factor.

Only have experience from last season and likely will be a playoff team again this season, but here's something to think about:
-Don't lose your identity. Whatever you did to get there...why change?
-If you have to motivate your kids to stay "up" during the playoff practices, then you are too late to the party. By this time last year our kids couldn't wait to come to practice. You COACHES have to create this environment.
-We didn't shorten practice necessarily, but contact (other than inside run) was limited.
I think the best approach that we took was to continue trying to get better at what we do- we did not put the focus of the opponent over the focus on us.

This point in the year comes down to execution and who has the athletes to make chicken salad.

While we will cut back on practice a bit, the biggest thing that we do is simply go chop wood. We are going to do what we do. Every day. A Monday is a Monday. Every week.
The only big change from the day to day routine for the playoff is that the young kids that get brought up to finish the season will get a chance to show off to the coaches and upperclassmen with some end of practice competitions.
We just had 2 big back to back games and while we did acknowledge the significance, we simply mentioned it and went on with the routine.

We cut our practice time down but not the level of contact. Early in the year we practice for around 2:20-2:30, after about 7 weeks we start to cut it down. By the end of the year we are down to about 1:55-2:05.
We harp on the kids though that we are cutting time not intensity, it's a battle to keep the intensity up late in the regular season or if we aren't playing a "good" opponent sometimes.

Our program motto is to GET BETTER TODAY ... focus just on the day that is given to us and stacking successes daily. Every Friday (game day) is our Super Bowl. No game is bigger other than the one right in front of us that week. We do not change our practice schedule or our routine nor do we prepare any differently for a conference rival or a winless non-conference team. It is always about US just getting better and playing our best ball at the end of year.
At the same time, we give them a vision of the whole season. Our regular season is a 9 game schedule and we break it down to thirds. We look at the first 3 games as the first quarter, the next 3 as the second quarter and the final 3 as the third quarter and the playoff season (5 games to win it all) as our 4th quarter. Our kids have been ALL IN and often break indy or team periods with GET BETTER! We have been fortunate enough to win level one of the playoffs as a staff every year (9 straight years) and have made it to level 3, the last 5 years with one of those years making it to the semifinals. Hoping to hold the gold ball sooner than later.
Finally, we always explain to our young men the importance of going deep into the playoffs gives us a program advantage in that by the time they graduate they will have practiced and played an additional 9-12 weeks of football. So in essence they are playing almost 5.5 regular seasons of high school football compared to their counterparts that don't make the playoffs. And that's why it is always the same teams fighting for gold at the end of the road.
Bottom line ... create a sense of urgency every day and embrace the importance of having a great practice, because it truly is ALL ABOUT PRACTICE and just GETTING BETTER!

If you win, you often have a deeper run than if you lose.
Seriously though, we pull up JV kids to run scout and keep guys who are on the 2 deep and in the rotation fresh. Shorter practices, especially when it's somebody we already have played, less contact, and sometimes shorter practices.

We have cut down on contact in position group periods but our schedule and everything else has remained almost the exact same all season. This ensures that we still get the same amount of reps every day which is important for us since we film every practice.

We cut down on contact, practice time, and conditioning. If the kids are not in game shape by now then they aren't going to get into game shape.
We spend extra time on the mental side of things and fundamentals. We spend more time watching opponent film and walking through things. It paid off for us last year as we were State Runner Up despite being the second smallest school in our division.

Dance with the guy that brung 'ya!
What you did during the season got you where you are now...don't change, add, or subtract.

We had a little more weight room time. Cut down on contact. Helmets only 4 of the 5 days. Conditioned more. Concentrated on execution and technique. Tried to avoid all injuries that occur in practice.
