I do a modified approach to the same workout as my players, just not as intense. I do need to do more cario work. At times I'm on the same workout as carson. The holidays and summers really do me in - 12 oz curls are tough to avoid.

Coaches, What sort of stuff do you do with your team regarding nutrition? Other than talk about it, does anyone actually teach a unit of nutrition to their team? If so, could someone share their information? I'm looking for something to do with my team - preaching and harping only seems to work with a handful of kids.

Coaches,
Our defensive staff is looking to visit a school (high school or college) in the midwest who runs both the under and over fronts in their package. Could anyone recommend a staff that you know would be willing to clinic us, or is there anyone on this board willing to have us?
I know this board is as good a clinic as there is, but it's just not the same as sitting down face to face.
Thanks for any help!

We do dynamic stretching (like coachjd mentioned) and static at the end. The one thing I have found is that if you don't change the routine up once in a while, kids will get bored and find a way to cut corners. I'm considering doing the dynamic warmups in our position groups with each coach responsible for his own kids. Anyone already doing this instead of team stretches?

I asked a nearby college coach about how you could tell if your players were motivated. He said, "Coach, do your players play the game for you, or do they play the game with you?" It really makes sense. If they play the game for you, then you have motivated them through preparation. If they play the game with you, then you haven't compelled them enough in preparation.

Friday evening - cold beverages as a staff w/ wives and families.
Saturday morning - meet as a staff a 9 a.m. to reveiw previous night's film and discuss personnel changes, etc. Usually done by noon. Staff is given film to break down on next opponent for Sunday's meeting.
Sunday afternoon - staff meets at 3 p.m. to break down next opponent and put together plan of attack. Players come in at 6 p.m. to view Friday night's film and to view staff scouting report. After players leave (8ish) staff meets for another half hour or so for any last input. Usually home by 9.
Monday morning - meet with team to view film on next opponent during 1st hour class.

GP, You're correct, my situation is different and a little unique. I'm only in my third year as HC/OC and was fortunate to retain the previous head coach on staff for one year and learn from him. I confided in him often regarding play calling. This past year was a little different as my confidant retired. I had to call plays on my own for the first time and it was a little nerve-racking at first, but it was also very exciting - a great adrenaline rush in anticipation of calling a great play. To answer your question, when I needed some input, I found myself relying on my OL and WR coach in the box. They had a checklist that they were looking at as the game wore on. But in the end, I made the best educated call that I could. Hope that answered your question.

GP, As the HC/OC, I DO care what's going on with the defense during the game. I am a former defensive coordinator, and we run the very same defense now. Therefore, no one on staff knows the defense as well as I do. I have a very good Def. Co. whom I can grust a great deal, but I still occassionaly make suggestions when I see the need, but not very often. I'm very lucky to have a staff that is really defensive minded and we emphasize defense first!
Just my two cents!

I am the HC/OC and call plays on game night, simply because we have a smaller staff as well. Due to a relatively young staff, I don't feel comfortable with someone else calling plays just yet - hopefully that will come in the near future.
A few other thoughts: In the box, I speak with my OL coach, while a JV assistant has specific things to look for (checklist). I don't need anyone telling me what coverage the defense is in because I know that from scouting reports and can see that from the sideline. The last type of person I want in the press box is someone giving me a play-by-play of the game. I "strongly" encourage very little dialogue while we are on offense - mainly because I've got a lot going on in my head. If I have a question, I do expect an immediate answer. In between offensive series, I will have a detailed discussion with the coach in the box.

I know many coaches may not think this is "bush league" but I do: I can't stand coaches at the high school level who teach chop blocking for pass protection. I know it's legal, but it's dangerous! We lost two starting D tackles in one game because of it! To me, coaches who teach chop blocking teach it because they don't know how to teach pass protection.
Anyone else have a problem with chop blocking?

Coaches, I need to make changes to my entire staff if we are to maintain a consistent winning program. The only problem is how do I go about doing so without hurting feelings? My staff is very loyal to me and the program, but we just didn't get the job done this year with above-average players. The problem isn't just at the varsity level. The problem is at all three levels (Frosh, JV, Varsity). I want to be truthful, yet honest with these coaches about moving them. Has anyone gone through this before? If so, any advice?

If you can find a college that will allow your staff to go visit their staff - do it!
If you are from the Midwest, the Bowling Green staff makes themselves available to high school coaches every Friday, all day long, up until spring ball. Just call ahead. They have been very helpful with our staff. Plus, thier spring clinic is great!

Last year band got football concessions because they ran it. Booster Club runs the winter and spring concessions. Next year Booster Club is taking the football concessions back over.

Let me ask this question? Aren't you supposed to stay away from meals high in protein (ie. chicken) on game day? It seems that I read something that it's best to load up on protein the night before because protein takes longer to break down. Hence, the reason for pasta on game day. Does anyone else stay away from chicken on game day?
Our game day pre-game meal is prepared by our parents and takes place after school at 3:00. We have meals loaded with carbs (pasta, pasta, pasta), a side salad, fruit and veg., and gatorade. Absolutely, NO SWEETS!

Had a starting player just this morning get picked up for admitting to using pot. He must miss at least 3 games. Our playoffs begin tonight. Do I allow him to stand on the sideline tonight or send him home?
My initial reaction is to send him home because he made a selfish decision over the team. I don't believe he deserves to be on the sideline. Am I wrong?

Gordie Gillespie from St. Francis College outside of Chicago is one of the best speakers I've ever listened to. The winningest coach in collegiate baseball history. Is a hall of famer in the state of Illinois in football, baseball, and basketball. His speech on philosophy is outstanding.

This is not the first time we've two-platooned, but the first time our coaches will two-platoon (coach one side of the ball only). Including our JV, we will have 8 coaches (6 paid / 2 volunteers). Therefore, we would have 4 coaches on each side of the ball, instead of every coach coaching two positions.
Annually, we have have 50-55 on varsity (SR/JR) and 35-40 on JV (Soph). Our JV's play on Thursday nights.
As far as numbers in programs we play against, they are pretty equal. We are the second lowest enrollment in our 9 team league. (8-2, 6-4 the last two seasons).
We're hoping that by two-platooning, our kids will get better at just one position because they will be busy the whole practice. Obviously, there will be kids that will have to play on both sides, but that only applies to a couple players.

I need some help Coaches.
I'm curious if anyone on this board has their JV football team practice with the varsity, and if so, how can I make it work?
I've been entertaining the idea and am now looking for some input. Could someone explain how you set up practice times, etc., and explain the pro's and con's of the situation?
The reason I've been considering this is because next year's team will be strictly 2-platoon. With the ability to do that, it makes sense to combine our varsity and JV staff and coach one position on order to maximize our practice time. Our JV coaches have been varisty coaches who have a lot of football experience.
Thanks for any help!

In Michigan we don't have "spring ball". Luckily we have an advanced sport class where we can get much of what we need accomplished.
