What do all these kids with ADD do when they get out of school and their job doesn't allow them to have an IEP or 504? How does this help them long term?

I've told my kids that they are only allowed to have a spinner in my class if they have it written as an accommodation in an IEP or 504 plan. If they don't need an IEP or a 504 plan, then they don't need that d@mn spinner in my room. As for football, I agree with someone who posted above. If practice can't keep you engaged then up downs are probably a perfect way to fidget. btw I think these 504's and IEP are sometimes insane. There is one kid I had one time that anytime he got upset he could pull out his phone and listen to music. Thats nuts. We have stuff here where the kids that can't act right get to accumulate points for doing what they should be doing anyway and redeem them for crap. I call them treasure box kids. Like my young kids in school, if they do right, they get to pick out of the treasure box and bring another bouncy ball or some other crap home. I probably do more to undermine everything they are doing because everytime I sign their behavior sheet I ask them if they are going to get to pick out of the treasure box today.

Here is another one along those lines. We are watching film on the school I had just left that is also the in county rival. They spell out the name of the school with flags and run around after a score. Well they got out of order and instead of TROUP it spelled TRUOP. I was half hysterical and half embarrassed because I also graduated from there.

Do these things have a legit purpose or no? They've been showing up on the practice field (we're t-shirt/shorts, no pads for spring) and I have no idea if it's a distraction or if these kids would be a lost ball in high weeds without it. Their focus is all over the place now, and I can't imagine it being worse, but I've been wrong before. if this happened I would have to see how far one of those things could fly.

I don't think I have ever shared this but it serves as a good lesson. In 2014 I had a senior heavy offensive line that was really good. 3out of 5 played in college. My left tackle was very frustrating for me though. He was probably the most talented but just didn't have the desire to be really good. Well we go over some adjustments during Indy and when we get to team he messes it up. I correct him on the fly again and on the next play he does it again. So I said, Dadgummit Tristan what are you freaking deaf? then one of the coaches says , "well actually coach he is legally deaf." Dude wore hearing aids but kept his hair long so you couldn't see them. I had no idea but it all made sense then. Then I was pissed that nobody told me.

Given the fact that the OP has mentioned two kids for one WR position, I guess he is. Could be wing t. I was joking btw. Since there is one wr, he's probably run heavy. I would play the guy that will block.

To me, this is a sign that the guy hasn't watched much film. Eventually you notice everything going on if you watch enough. I don't know. Both of the guys who scolded me about it had been here for 25 years and were supposed film junkies (I don't know because I didn't really care for either and their roles on my staff were somewhat limited as they were both onto semi-retirement). They were super pissed that I wasn't just staring at the formation and play. BUT IT'S A GIANT BACKWARDS THREE!!!! I'm with you. I notice stuff like that too.

Watching scout film back in the day before video quality was that good. A kid for the team we were scouting broke away on an inside run and was gone and then all of the sudden falls down. Looked like a classic sniper job. It was only after rewatching it several times did we see a black dog streak onto the field and run right into the ball carrier. Oh and the field had a giant tomahawk on it with big drops of blood dripping off of the blade. Watched a film one time in a staff meeting and the 3 on the 30 yard line was painted backwards. I said freeze the film and then said "Doesn't anyone else find it disturbing they painted the 3 backwards?" All the old school guys grumbled and said stuff like- What the hell are you looking at!?! We're here to prepare for the other team! I never understood how you can't notice little crap like that when watching a film. To me, this is a sign that the guy hasn't watched much film. Eventually you notice everything going on if you watch enough.

We as coaches sometimes forget what an influence we can have on kids. A few guys have already mentioned not letting guys quit. I had a kid come up to me last year with all of his stuff. I said what are you doing? He said quitting. I said back to him, "Turn your tail around and go put your stuff back in your locker." He did and stayed. I had another one almost ten years ago who wanted to quit. He said, "Coach I just dont think football is for guys like me." I said, "NO football is for guys exactly like you." But the funny thing was I didnt mean it and actually thought this guy should quit. Two years later he is starting on both sides of the ball for us. He wasn't great but in the first game he graded out higher than all other offensive lineman. In one game he had to block a guy who ended up playing at Alabama and got drafted in like the 2nd round. He blocked him well enough that we lost the game on a fumble on the last drive. Fast forward 2 more years and this kid goes to the Citadel and goes out for track. He threw for me too and was never good enough to go to a meet. We always had 3-4 kids better than him. He works for 4 years at the Citadel and ends up breaking their hammer throw record and scores points for them at the conference meet. This kid is literally 5'5 190 and fat. He had no business succeeding in anything sports related. What would have happened if I hadn't of tried to talk him out of quitting? We have a huge role to play in these kids lives and I am more reminding myself than anyone.

It's always been about "not getting hurt for basketball/baseball", in my experience. This started popping up more and more after the concussion craze hit. We had a baseball player come out this year at wr. He would have started for us. 6'1 35 inch vert. Quits because he doesn't want to get hurt. Breaks his thumb on his throwing hand last month. Saw him last week. I just said, "didn't you quit football so you wouldn't get hurt for baseball?" I just let it hang there.

I think if you can do it then great. But it's not going to make or break you. If you're a team that likes to put stuff on social media it sure does look a lot better if you post lifts. Two years ago we had some trouble with the kids all wanting to go to this local trainer. He was against olifts and put them on bands running all over the place when they couldn't even track over their ankle on a squat. So I pulled together some clips to show our guys of colleges lifting and almost all did the olifts. My contacts at Alabama, Tulane, Uga, and LSU said they snatched as well. So I wanted them to see that if you are interested in playing in college it's in your best interest to learn these lifts and I'm the only guy in town certified to teach them. We also didn't have good buy in with our coaches either. They thought bench was most important. So I show the videos and at the end my hc asks the players what they saw. I thought finally he's going to get it. He said, "I saw all the guys wearing the same clothes". So he says that's what we are going to do and in typical fashion speaks before he thinks. He says if you don't have your practice clothes you won't lift. Well as the clothes washer I already know that some shirts were lost during the season. I also know some of our players are dirt poor and have no way to wash clothes every day. So he says we will wash them except we have players six periods a day so I will have to wash clothes every day at the end of the day. Takes two hours to completely wash and dry a team set. Of course I'm the only guy who knows that because I'm the only guy who consistently washes clothes. So day 1, 1st period three players don't have clothes. I send them to the hc. Every period the same thing happens. By day three he says forget about it . Ok rant over. If you have players all at one time it can be easy to do with enough coaches. If you are in a situation like mine you are asking to fight a battle you can't win. That's why you don't let them take the short/shirts out of the lockeroom home with them . They got lost between the wash and the dryer. They are wherever all those socks I've lost are.

The more I think about it, the more I realize this is our fault (and by our I mean coaches). We are the ones who come up with these pseudo motivational catchphrases, repeat them endlessly, hang them on the weight walls, etc. Kids have just put their own trendy twist on them with the hashtag emoticon idiocy. from what i observe it isnt so much "us coaches" that have started and spread this trend, it is those who are around football players but not actually their HS coaches gurus, camps guys, private trainers, all star teams, training companies etc. because the real coaches (the guys who actually get called Coach whatever your last name is instead of a first name) are actually working.

I know why we do it. There's one coach on our staff who always yells "take a knee!!" When a kid is injured. What are we gonna do? Tell him to knock it off. Is he the same guy that yells "Block somebody!" ? We had a coach like that one time. Didnt know any plays but always said the right phrases. His favorite was any play over 3 yards when we were on defense he would yell "Too much".

Two years ago we are playing a team and for some reason in their coverage the apex defender in trips runs with the #2 like hes in man but everyone else on the team is obviously in c3. So I said hey lets run #2 on a vertical in flood along with the #1. Guy on the out will be wide open. So we put it in and rep it all week. First drive we run it and score. Second drive, 2nd play, apex jumps the flat and we hit the vertical for an 80 yard TD. Right before the half, I call it again, and the HC screams into the headset ,"Coach dont call that play, it hasn't worked all night!"
I just gave the RB coach who was with me in the box, the Jim Halpern look from The Office.

They don't let kids drop here but at one of my old schools they did. Football had to take weight training but civilians could take the class too. The first timers thought it would be bench press and curl fest upon arrival. I let them know that we would be learning the olympic lifts, would only be using a bar for about a month, and wouldnt bench for at least two. Then we would end the first workout with a crossfit style conditioning circuit. After 3 days, we would then start the real program. ha.

As I sit here as the HC/OC, I'm trying to think of how many times I've had a 200 yard rusher and finished with a loss like what happened yesterday. My fullback went for 205 on 25 carries and two slots combined for 130 on 10 carries. We punted once, when we were called for a 15 yard penalty on a perfectly executed scramble for a 15 yard penalty. Swish cheese defense kept our offense off the field and we lost 40-20. Mind boggled. Had a game this year where our QB ran for 176 yards in the first half and we lost. We had one kid drop a punt for a TD, and one kid misfield two kickoffs for turnovers. Was absolutely disgusting. Game still give me nightmares I had two games in the last two years where my qb had over 200 yards and we lost.

I think thats your problem. Why isn't someone teaching weight training who is knowledgeable? Does he coach football? Its really a union issue. The gym teacher does not coach a sport. We have a teacher/coach on staff (PE certified) and we brought up the idea of a sports class to admin. We were told that the other part time PE teacher (who also doesn't coach anything) would get first dibs. I know no support from admin........ makes it difficult yeah thats the real problem.

I don't see how you guys function without weight training classes. Yes we are the only team in our league without a "football tech class". There is one section of weight lifting that is ran like a cross fit cardio class I think thats your problem. Why isn't someone teaching weight training who is knowledgeable? Does he coach football?

I think thats too much. Pick either before or after. Both is pretty tough. In my experience, what you lose are guys who have football as a second sport but still want to play. Its not their first love but when it gets down to it they can contribute. Case in point, my QB the last two years. In 14.5 games at QB his numbers were comparable to Deshawn Watson in high school. But his first love was basketball. He turned down big time D1 football offers to play basketball and football at a D2 school. If we wanted to be hard, we could have put him in a position to choose and he wouldn't have chose us. How important is winning or competing? I would love to do less, but this is what is needed for us to even compete. It sounds like you have the luxury of having multisport D1 athletes in your school. We have had 1 D1 player come out of this school in the last 15 years from all sports combine. Last year we beat a team that had 7 D1 players. We are a closed district of "small kids" that play teams full of D1 kids. Ive won games while outmatched too. Scored 50 on a team two years ago that had approximately 34 D1 guys on defense and somehow they let them all play at the same time. I feel your pain. But you better dang well make sure you aren't running off guys that can help. Somebody has to play scout team. I had the same experience with baseball. I was a part time baseball player. Baseball coach wanted me to play summer ball and I said no because it would interfere with football. But I loved baseball and still wanted to play and truth be told was a much better baseball player than football player. Got moved up to varsity on a good team as a freshman. But because he wanted all this extra stuff I opted to just not play. Its something I still regret to this day. I coached with that baseball coach a few years ago and he admitted he was asking too much and ruined me playing baseball. I was probably the 3rd best baseball player in my grade level and I never played another game. I do agree there are things you have to do to compete. You have to lift. But you dont have to lift every day. You have to do some type of jumping, change of direction, speed work, etc. But you dont have to do it every day. I would pick one time and go with that and not require both. If you had a weight training class and wanted to add in something else I got no problem with that. But both is too much in February.
