Coach, I’ve seen some schools just hang like small Christmas light on the wall and from the ceiling with a fog machine going for kids to pose in front of, or a school banner.

No, I've seen it. I would just assume the teams are 8 guys. Oh, like the whole team is just 8 dudes playing true Ironman football?

All the rules in football the last decade benefit the offense... casual fans want to see points and touchdowns. No huddle offenses designed to get players tired are built to take advantage of a loophole in the clock-rules to get more points. As an OC, this is definitely the case. I think one common sense solution would be being tightening up illegal man downfield to prevent RPOs and putting more restrictions on no huddle offenses. If we are all serious about player safety, then we should be advocating for fewer plays per game, not more. What erks me on illegal man downfield, is when a guy is 8-15 yards downfield and the ball is thrown right by him on a dig or post and there is no call. Last 2 years tds and crunch time first downs have happened to us with this happening. It even happened 4 times in the state championship to the school I was at in 2013.. And those refs are supposedly the best. Heck, I know it’s freshman ball, but I coached one year of it at the 7a level in Arkansas. 4 times we gave up touchdowns to the OFFENSIVE tackle! Yes the the tackle 77,50,74,and another 77 were their jersey numbers .Running post and go routes. First time we were in straight man, and dude catches it all by himself in the end zone , and I’m like no freakin way, it was number 77! I got 2 answers on it, one was “Coach we don’t enforce the number rule here in junior high” which of course I’m like ok, but they can’t have 7 guys running routes! The other answer was “Coach those wide outs were off the line so he’s uncovered!🤦🏼♂️“ I even had it screen shot on my phone to show the refs late in the year cause this team had done it on film. They said they would watch for it and that it was illegal. What do ya know, it happens! But they at least came back after half and said sorry coach we blew it.

Arkansas , they are all independents, it’s not recognized yet by AAA
In Oklahoma, any school in class A, smallest of 11 man can Petition down. They capped 8 man 4 years ago. Class A usually ranges 212/206 at the top all the way down to 120s,
But some 8 man , class B, are 80 up to 150! And class C is 80 down to 30.

I dont know if you can find them anymore since they are shutting down operations. But Russell dry fit shorts are the best shorts ever made. Walmart has them, basically just like the Nike version

I am a huge fan of XENITH...2 reasons... I like the technology of the inside of their helmets... and the main reason is fit... they are the only helmet I have ever tried that fits snugly to every players head regardless of shape or size... the Chin strap system that s webbed through the helmet blatter pulls it snug against the players head... My kid will wear it every year Gave a bunch of our guys cauliflower ear for how the jaw pad around the ear lobe fit. This was the year before I here, but our head coach said multiple guys had to get ears drained after games.

My guess is that they're trying to unload their stock of physical media to eliminate overhead and transition to straight downloads and VOD. Coaching DVDs are just not that lucrative anymore. Nobody buys DVDs in general and the coaching community is a tiny market. I agree. I made a new laptop purchase recently and I had a hard time finding one that even had a disc drive. I know all of our school laptops do not have disc drives as well. Now with an external usb disc drive, I am trying to figure out how to upload coaches choice films to our hudl WITH sound none of the small chrome book styles will have DVD players, you can still get "bigger" screened laptops that have dvd players

My best guess is they're hurting for money. This year was the only year I can remember that they weren't set up at our state coaches clinic which seems like a no-brainer if you're trying to make money, but you also have to be there and I have no idea what that cost is (or transportation, lodging, etc). I havent seen them at a clinic in over 3 years, and that was at one of the Dallas Glazier Clinics, and that was the first time since probably 2010? I had seen someone set up for them. Usually it was college GAs set up.

"Do whatever the head coach asks as if it is the most important thing in the world." I now understand the full plate a HS HC already has and will work my butt off to take as much off as possible while adding value wherever and however I can." This has been my mantra for 40+ years. IMHO, the three most important traits of an assistant are loyalty to the HC, a great work ethic, and a willingness to learn. I would add "Do the jobs nobody else wants to do." Yes, don't be afraid or above doing the dirty work.

I apologize if someone has asked this before, but I was wondering if anyone on here knew when passing league or 7-on-7s in the offseason became a thing. When, where, how, etc? I played HS ball in the early to mid 90s, and we were doing them then, but how did this become a big part of HS football? Probably expanded from team camps at colleges. And their practices, so hs coaches just decided to do it , kinda like summer league basketball and baseball.

I picked up an assignment this year coaching freshmen basketball this winter as our new HC couldn't find anyone else to fill the role. As much as football gets the "grinder" reputation, my hours and my nights are way longer coaching basketball than they were for football... Might be, but no field up keep, sweep floor, and not near as much laundry. What sucks is 2-3 nights of games especially if on the road.

IMO plans like this are pointless. A buddy of mine, Said his plan after 5 years was to be working for a school, community, And an administration that was as committed as he was to winning. And would be committed to doing all the necessary things to be able to compete at a high level year in and year out. So he kinda flipped it back on them.

First year teacher story^ that happens a lot believe or not. Hell, you can't fail my class now unless you literally do nothing. I allow for make ups at any time and allow for essays to take the place of damn near any assignment. Sounds like my class, I do put a time limit for make up work, everything is due no later than the end of the 7th week of the 9weeks Heck I allow notes for each test, and for all the correct notes those count as bonus points, I even give them 5 bonus points for putting a book cover on their books . Out of 4 classes and 78 students, I only had 2 students do this!

bad administrative support I've been around - we had a guy leave late to take a job that couldn't be passed up, nobody blamed him but it left us in a bind for hiring, not only was it late and we weren't likely to get a great candidate, the teaching field was physics. So when the HC asked the principal if they could loosen up that teaching field a little, get somebody else to do physics and let me bring in a biology or life sciences guy...they said no...the department head didn't want to move anybody so that was that. We ended up not hiring the spot and coaching that year short a coach. - Once had a freshman algebra teacher (first year teacher!) at a small school fail 80% of the freshman team the 1st six weeks...we went from having two teams to having 1 with 15 kids on it.....principal said her hands were tied, the kids just didn't make the grades stuff like that good administration understands the difficulties of the athletics and tries to meet the football team halfway, bad administration is when the teachers, department heads, and principal treat the football team like its an adversary that they need to vanquish First year teacher story^ that happens a lot believe or not.

I have been on programs that did similar things, it became a big waste of time and kids grew to resent it and started blocking out the coach. I am not writing that yours will be, but just beware of oversaturating them with your voice so that you eventually become just constant background noise (and are not listened to when you have something more important to say). Words are like money, the more you say the less they are worth. I think the part where you meet with seniors who want to go play at the next level can be beneficial, as this is the area being directly related to coaching; but having sophomores come in once a week for life skills will just become a chore to them. I would definitely make it optional and have an open mind to when kids don't want to give up their free time to be lectured at. Previous staff I was on, every Thursday, during the season after practice we did a quick 5-20 min character building lesson. The head coach did the first 3, and an assistant was assigned a week later in the season. Most of us showed a quick video, something motivational or on somebody that overcame odds, or even a movie clip. Every now and then a guest speaker. I thought it was good. BUT it was short and sweet (like u said less is more) after a 40 min Thursday practice. And then we went to the booster club team Meal somewhere in town. I would do something like once a month, and see if anyone wanted to volunteerly come in once a week. This might help get the message across better. Just a once a Month breakfast with a quick 5-7 min talk would work.
