I apologize if someone has asked this before, but I was wondering if anyone on here knew when passing league or 7-on-7s in the offseason became a thing. When, where, how, etc?
I played HS ball in the early to mid 90s, and we were doing them then, but how did this become a big part of HS football?

Or something like that. 7-on-7 is a joke.

carookie I was out at the Nike Campus years ago for one of their big 7ons and Neil Lomax was telling a story about Mouse Davis doing something like a 7 on 7 and he seemed to think that this was the beginning of it. It's been a while so my memory is a little fuzzy on the details, though it would seem logical.

So I am taking this and figuring that sometime in the mid 70s in Oregon passing leagues began. I wonder how they spread? I am sure there are coaches on here older than I am, do any of you remember coaching or playing in a 7 on 7 in the early 80s (before my time)? If so, where were you at during this?

In Illinois, it would have been late 90s or early 2000s because that is when the state high school association authorized organized summer football practices. Prior to that, basically the only activity teams could do in the summer was lift weights and condition. You couldn't legally do anything that was football-specific.

I played HS in the mid-70's and remember doing 7v7 against other schools. But it was to get work on passing and defense, no competitions or anything. Coaches actually set scenarios - 3rd and long type of thing. This was at Syrup U as a matter of fact.

In KY we played in a league 7 on 7 in 93. So it was my school and about 5 others I think. KY at that time especially wasn’t on the cutting edge of football. So someone somewhere was doing by the early 90s.

And their practices, so hs coaches just decided to do it , kinda like summer league basketball and baseball.
