TDmaker, how do you structure your practices? Could you give a breakdown of the periods you to? We have about 300 kids in our school and would like to figure out a way to practice more efficently while working both sides of the ball.

Really looking forward to the D6 game today. Sucks that I have a wedding to go to at 4 o'clock. The DVR will be rolling, that is for sure. I've gotten to see St. Johns play a few times this year, and even spent some time over watching a couple practices during their playoff run. First class organization over that way.

Brophy, I would agree that if you are a two platoon team two-a-days are really not that neccessary. For HS teams that have to play kids both ways I think that they may still have some merit. You need alot of time to get kids ready to play both sides of the ball.

We did the old school two - a -days this year, and it was the first time since college I have done anything like that. I really liked the format, because (as a coach, anyway) it nice to have that extended break and be able to go home and get off your feet and sit in the AC. I felt much more energized from a coaching standpoint. Many of our kids also expressed the fact that they liked this much better than how we have conducted them in the past.

Effectivness of shoulder blocking in a non Wing-T offense. This is far and away the biggest one this year. We started using the flipper toward the latter part of the year on our combos and it made alot of difference.
Continue to find the most effective practice schedules possible. X's and O's are what they are but I really think that you see an improvement in your teams when you start practicing more efficently. This applies to both my individual OL time and our practice as a whole.
Find the most efficent way to teach our OL the run game plays. We were not very smart this year, especially when things started to change from what we thought they would be.
Double teams: We started off using the four hands four eys concept but our kids did too much looking and not enough pushing so we started to predeterimine them more and it helped our kids. There are still some things I need to speak with some other coaches about.
Misdirection Runs: We didn't have enough of these this year, and as I have started going back through our run game I think that it hurt us.
Studying the Wing T and the Flexbone offenses. I like both of them and would like to be able to merge them at some point.

I wish I would have seen this earlier in the day. Would have been nice to check it out throughout the day at school. Kind of surprised a little at the lopsided score of game one. Looking forward to going home and watching the rest of them this weekend.

If memory serves my right I believe he has (or has had a sheet) that was referred to as an "if/then" sheet. I can't remember all of it (I think it was on the board somewhere on here, not sure), but off the top of my head I believe it said: Run the Triple FIRST, If pinching to stop the triple run zone dive. That kind of stuff.
I guess if you have been running the same system for over 20 years as he has you really don't need one because you know the ins and outs of it so well.

I coached a year in college after I got done playing and I felt like it was a really good experience. You get to be around guys who really know this stuff and spend their whole day studying it. As others have said, you have opporutunites to do the others at other points in life. I currently am an OL coach at the HS level and I feel like doing the year in college helped me alot, especially seeing the things that they put in on an everyday basis.

The thread I started about the practice times got me thinking about some other aspects of practice organization.
To those of you whose kids have to practice both sides of the ball and your coaches have to coach both sides of the ball how do you structure your practices to make sure that your kids get ample amount of work on both sides of the ball?
Assuming you play on Friday Night, do you have specific days as Offense/Defense days where that is all that you work on? Or do you try and practice both aspects in the same day everyday?

To further this question a little bit: Does the amount of time change if you are having to practice both sides each day?

Has anyone watching the Monday Night game noticed the size of Childress' playcall card. It is a increddibly massive sheet of a paper that has about three folds in and with information on both sides. That is unreal.

I normally get about 20-40m for my offensive line (I think the rest gets 15m of offensive indy, and then they do their dive drill and perimeter) but I have to go through the run blocking and the pass pro in that time. I would like about 15m more than that, but that isn't real feasible with going both sides in one practice.

Something we did in college was a "sudden change" drill. At a various parts of the practice the head coach would blow his whistle and yell sudden change and then offense v. defense or punt/punt return, etc. They would do 1-3 plays and then back to practice as normal. Nice little change of pace to a typical practice.

I second the filming indy idea, especially if you have the capabilities to do it.

First class move and something I think that others would be well served to follow suit.
Without these great men and women in uniform we would not have the ability to coach this game we all love!!!

Coach, you may want to check with your schools tech coordinator and see if you can get a multi disk DVD burner. That is what we did this year, so we burn the main film off our school laptop and then throw it in the multi-disk burner.

Jsucoach, could you detail how much time you spend on things on your Tuesday/Wednesday schedule. Give like a sample practice plan. One thing I am trying to do if find that happy medium between making sure you get all of your stuff done vs. staying on the field too long.

I use a 0-1-2-3 grading scale for my lineman.
0: Had no idea what you were doing (missed assignment) 1: Knew your assignment but did not execute it correctly (poor pad height, etc.) 2: Knew and executed your assignment 3: Did an exceptional job of your assignment.
Then take the total plays x2, and divide that by the players total points.
