During the Georgia vs Gerorgia Tech game the announcer mentioned that Paul Johnson - who calls the plays - does not use a Call Sheet during games. Interesting. Anyone else out there not have a call sheet handy?

If memory serves my right I believe he has (or has had a sheet) that was referred to as an "if/then" sheet. I can't remember all of it (I think it was on the board somewhere on here, not sure), but off the top of my head I believe it said: Run the Triple FIRST, If pinching to stop the triple run zone dive. That kind of stuff.
I guess if you have been running the same system for over 20 years as he has you really don't need one because you know the ins and outs of it so well.

I had one starting out. I sort of stopped because we simplified the defense. With a guy like Paul who has ran his system for 20 years and more it makes it easy to just call your plays. you seen the same defenses or similar and how teams attack you.

I heard that PJ has an if/then sheet...if you watch Texas Tech..Leach calls his plays off of what looks like a folded up piece of paper

I don't use one. When I have I look at my sheet instead of what happening on the field. Have some notes in my pocket.

I started with a defensive call sheet, but then realized it spent most've the game in my back pocket, so I put that time to better use. I have someone on the headset who keeps track of our defensive play calls and the offensive play call and that really helps me figure out what I want to do next in response to where they are attacking.

Actually the sheet leach has is a tally sheet. He calls plays and tries to make sure that he does so in a manner that everyone gets the ball and there is not one player the D can Key on.

I run the flexbone too. I dont use one. I believe if you need a call sheet you have too many plays installed.

I have one in my back pocket. I may check it to see if we should run something and that means we are getting beat.

Wow. What a great insight. That is just what I need to hear.

I carry one. But in our best offensive games I don't refer to it much. We don't have that many plays. I will sue it to remind me to run "such and such play from a certain formation", but that is about it. You don't need a call sheet to run 6 runs.

we used a three panel wrist coach so that our QB could go into our up-tempo mode easier.

we used 3 three panel wristbands just to have all the plays we had in by week 10 of the season.

I like wrist bands. We used the for blocking assignments. I have never used them to call plays but it works great for a backup players switching positions during the game.

Like others said, Johnson uses an if/then sheet.
His offense is a great example of system football. If you take away one thing, he burns you on another play.

That sounds like what I had after we switched to flexbone. I didn't really call the game off a sheet, but I had one with the whole offense on it to review and make sure I wasn't forgetting anything (which was always a possibility).

This was my first year as an OC.
Went into the first few games with the professional looking 8x11 sheets filled front and back with situational calls, specials, formational plays, field position, etc... I found myself buried in the call sheet.
Halfway through the season I had just a few of our specials on there and some reminders and I would just check it on occasion. I was able to watch the game and not my sheet.
We were a first year flexbone team. The longer the season went the more comfortable I was just calling plays based on what was working.
I will probably always have some sort of small sheet with me for reminders but will not be buried in it anymore

I agree the answer sheets are always nice. Sometimes in the heat of battle you may forget a thing or two you worked on during the week if the defense comes out in a certain look. I didn't use a call sheet for the start of the season and just ran the plays in with my split ends because my qb played both ways and we ran a lot of keepers so tried to let him rest in the huddle... somewhere along the line, no matter how much we worked on it the splits would screw up the play call every now and then. We use a lot of motions and formations with a few number of plays (wing t) so the verbage was a little longer for a few of them. Anyway after awhile I got the quarterback a wrist band and just told the splits the number. Didn't have a bad play call after that. Just needed a sheet to know what number the play I wanted was. I still felt weird having a playsheet....like an NFL guy. Fact is... you should know your offense well enough and what the defense is doing to you that you know what to call.
