What about all the miles driving to and from the field house during the summer? If it in fact can be counted as a second job. Here's how I understand this in relation to my FIRST job. I cannot write miles off to and from my office, just to and from business related functions (going to a clients office, etc.) So, my morning commute doesn't count, but my miles to go see somebody does. I don't know how that relates to a second job, but I work 40 miles away from our field house, so you can bet I'm asking my CPA if I can write that mileage off......... And that phrase "so you can bet I'm asking my CPA" is all you need to know. I have W-2 income from coaching, and multiple sources of 1099 income......my wife had W-2 income from two different sources, I have business expenses, I count a home office, the whole 9 yards....... Costs me $135 to get my taxes done........ No brainer.......

What I am asking is, specifically what all can you claim? - tennis shoes - khakis/shorts/jocky strap/socks - sun glasses - bought a kid's school lunch - bought myself lunch b/c I was too tired to make a sandwich - bought a burger on the way home from practice b/c the wife wasn't going to cook that late - sun screen/sun hat - sharpies, notebooks, paper sleeves, etc.... - You can claim any supplies you buy out of your own pocket that are required for the job. If you have to drive to practice or stadium after you normal day job is over, you can claim that mileage as a second job. It added up for me this year and saved me some money. From a business standpoint, you ARE NOT SUPPOSE to deduct clothing and meal money spent on you...... Meal money you spend on others is acceptable. When I take a client to lunch, I can only deduct their meal, not mine. Also, just because I need to wear a shirt and tie to work doesn't mean I can write it off. Ultimately, you can either hope to avoid the audit bomb, spend hours learning stuff you don't need, or rely on a tax professional. I choose the last one.

Do you have some substantial 1099 income? If not, you need to adjust your withholdings, unless you are disciplined enough to have saved the 5k........ I'm pure 1099 income, and I didn't owe over 5k I pay 5000 every month in taxes. Who cares? Difference between doing monthly estimated payments (I assume you are 1099 income) that are based off your income, and having a big nut to pay at the end of the year because you were THAT off. Completely different situation for someone on W-2 income, who has taxes taken out as they go along, and ends up with a tax bill for over 12% of their gross income. I mean, the goal is to play it perfect....paying nothing and not getting a refund. I don't care if you pay $50,000 a month in taxes.

We try to solve EVERY problem like this, and it NEVER works.
How do we fix X? Better add/delete a component.
Things get fixed when there is change in philosophy/application.
Offense ain't scoring? change schemes.........instead of better concept teaching, better off season conditioning, better drills, etc.
Economy ain't working, change interest rates, add this incentive (cash for clunkers), go after people making a profit, reform.........instead of investing in things that will actually drive our economy at the GUT level......like education.
It's the superfical versus the genuine change.
And the superfical fix has screwed up everything good we've ever had.......

thanks Dave, I thought that's was how it was. Trading materials originals for originals is legal, copies of other than to replace an original illegal , and for money is illegal Copies of an original you own and continue to own ( or was damaged or stolen prior to you selling it or trading it) and have not sold or traded away-legal Copy of an original you have sold or traded away-illegal Dave, This is great insight. Thanks.

In many of these scenarios, only the person accepting the money would know. Integrity for many means that what they do even though private would pass the test of having that decision made in front of the entire nation to see. Would it be OK to accept money from a legit S&M club, tobacco company, how about one of those legit California medicinal marijuana farms? Those are all legal businesses. Porn and strip clubs may appeal to the hedonist in many, but do they pass the stink test? Do healthy well adjusted 6 year old girls say "I want to be a stripper or porn star when I grow up"? Would you want your sister, mom doing this? or have a daughter growing up to be one of these damaged women? Then why is it ok for a stranger- because we dont really care. Many feel porn and strip clubs objectify women and many objective scientific studies show porn addictions hurt mens ability to relate to women in a meaninful way. Most porn star women and strippers are train wrecks and druggies. The guys I know that are/were addicted to porn/strip clubs had very real women relationship problems. Would it pass the test of having it all out in the open so mom, sister, or wife could see it? For some, there are no limits, for others/thankfully many still there are standards. Even though legal ( many destructive activities are legal) do you really want to accept money earned from that? Isnt that what integrity is about, doing the right thing even when no one would ever know about it. Sure, very tempting and difficult to have standards and integrity, very easy not to have any. It's always that way, the short cut always looks tempting. The guys I know that spend a lot of time at strip clubs, sure they can have money- what does that prove? They may even be married and have kids, what does that prove- maybe wife is in relationship only for $$ or prestige etc. The guys I know that are at these places and are addicted to porn dont have mutually satisfying and enduring relationships with women. I dont want that for the boys Im working with. So even though it would be done in private and no one would know but me, I would know and the answer would be a respectful, not in your face- no thank you. When I take money from him I tacitly endorse, approve and legitimize what the man does, for me and my house not how I want to roll/endorse or be remembered. When I respectfully and politely refuse the man knows not everyone has accepted his lowering of the bar into the gutter. We all have free will, make your own choices and endorsements. This, is what Brophy was talking about......... My objections come from the perception of others, and how you can't afford to just take the money without making sure the higher ups will back you up..........it is a PRAGMATIC approach. These objections are on moral grounds, and I disagree with the stance taken here.......as well as the straw man and other logical fallacies presented......

Glad to read your "google traduction" guys ;D ;D ;D Am I the only one on here surprised that Coach Leach took time to make a not so fancy trip to help out an European team he probably never heard of weeks before? Julien, Is what I wrote even close to "Swing your sword!"?

I don't know if the issue is so much based in ethics, as it perception. Unfortunately, the only place where football is a PURE business is the NFL.......at college and definitely H.S. "personal conduct" has to go hand and hand with winning. Now, what is right, and what is tacit herd mentality is an argument a public school football program CANNOT afford to take on. I'm going to guess most of the guys who said "take it" are assistants, and the guys who said "no" are headers. As an assistant (especially if you are a lay coach), you're untethered from conforming to anyone's perception except the HC. The HC, is an administrator, and every decision is a political one. I like the coach who said to get signed documents of affirmation from the school board, AD, principal, whomever that it is ok. That is not the right way.......but it is the CYA way...........and the HC (unless he is GOD), needs to have that in the forefront of every decision making process. So, the guy's good enough for the chamber of commerce and booster club but not good enough to give us money? Again, I'm assuming that he's going to give the money with no strings to the strip club. Can we take his money if he comes to our car wash? Can we sell him a 50-50 ticket? Let me be clear, I'd take the money.....I have no ethical hang-ups about it. I do have ethical hang-ups with strip clubs, but that is not the point...... So, the guy's good enough for the chamber of commerce and booster club but not good enough to give us money? I didn't say this........I didn't say anything close to this. I am saying the community and administration MAY have a problem with it. I'm guessing by the dissenters on this thread that there are some people who have a moral objection to it. I think that position is illogical. However, I also think it is illogical to ignore what could be a majority opinion simply because their position is illogical. Just because a group of people's position is wrong.......if they have the numbers and the power, I need to make sure I don't tick them off. Especially when I have higher concerns (the programs, the players, my assistants, etc.)........ So, the cautiousness is NOT due to ethical concerns, it is related to handling the politics of the situations......... It ain't right, but it is what it is.......

Refuse him and give him our program's number. We'd be happy to accept donations without moral judgments. It sounds like he's not asking for advert, you're just looking to thumb your nose at a guy's honest entrepreneurial excellence. How is this any different than a guy being an owner of a sports bar donating money/booster clubbing? I don't know if the issue is so much based in ethics, as it perception. Unfortunately, the only place where football is a PURE business is the NFL.......at college and definitely H.S. "personal conduct" has to go hand and hand with winning. I'm pretty sure my OC can get very tired of me.........
I have an idea......I pitch it, I give reasons why it works with what we do, etc., and when he says no, I move on.
Period.
Now, I've earned the right to openly disagree with him, but I always am respectful and end up behind him 100% in whatever we do......because the next time, I still want him to be open to listening.

I disagree with Huge Wyatt's assertion that football is the best taught subject. If this were the case no teams would sustain losing years. Football coaches like any other profession can be lumped into 4 categorizes poor, average and excellent. Coach, you math is a little shaky in this post. Inevitably, there are losing teams. Not every team can win 75% of their games, because WHO DID THEY BEAT? The closest we could get is everyone is .500.........and I'd love to see one league with more than 4 teams where everyone was .500...........I've never heard tell.......... And, mariner already mentioned the 4 categories thing...... Back to the point of this thread..........I have kids who are A/B honor roll because they play football......I have kids who graduate because they play football. We would add 1-3 extra dropouts, and 4-7 more drastic underachievers per class without football (we only graduate 50 a class). We have kids who are better students and better discipline wise SIMPLY because they are football players.

while I think football has many positives but there are also some negatives. If I had to choose between education of students and cutting football I would cut football. If one had to make that decision, yes. However, there will never be a time where you will have to choose between having a football program and keeping the school doors open. The issue (read: monster) is just too complicated and big to boil it down to an either/or situation.

I'm a vulture.....
We don't ask our OT's to be stud run blockers.....just be athletic enought to pass pro and get in the way.
Our good OL guys play C and OG, so I'm working out scrubs.
Everytime a WR drops a pass (espeically if said WR is in that 5' 10''+ range) I tell em' they are getting closer to changing their number.
Both my starting tackles were converted SE's.......
I kid around a ton, but if I really need a guy to move, our staff handles it, and we never MAKE a kid move.
We ask him, because if he hates it, we are all screwed, and what's the point?
I mean, it's HS football, it is suppose to be FUN.
Now, I know 95% of the kids would have a blast being an OL guy, they just don't know it, so we offer to "just try it out"........then, we are honest with them about which position they most likely would see the field at........

My most memorable was a little different. We played the Indiana School for the Deaf in the first round of the playoffs. We played them on a Wednesday (not Friday), because they had fall break and all the players would be going home (it was truly a campus). It was freezing cold. They weren't as good as us, but they had the best player on the field. He was a 6' 2'' 210 LBS running back that was the fast man on the field. Problem was, his OL could not block us. He's get the ball and break 3 tackles before churning out a 2 yard gain. He finished with 35 carries for 103 yards. Onye Davis....... He is now a Deaf Olympian www.viable.net/blog/?p=311I set the school record for tackles in a game (23, since re-broken), because I wasn't getting blocked, and knew exactly where the ball was going (they ran behind the same guy EVERY time). I made 23 tackles.........and on all of them I ended up on my back with Onye on top of me. More like 23 "got in the ways" I got our starting FB killed by Onye (who also played Linebacker), because I thought "hey these guys are deaf, I'm just going to call out the DL I'll be trapping on this play." I hollered, "I'm trapping 56" And Onye yelled, "Trap, trap, trap" Our FB was pissed and informed me back in the huddle that they don't have to be completely deaf to go to school here. At the end of the game (we won easily), we were going through the line shaking hands..........I had gone to our sign language teacher the day before and learned the sign for "good game".......I signed that to the passing players, and I could tell they appreciated it. Absolutely amazing experience.

The mass mailings and Junior days make it worse.......
When someone says "oh, he's getting recruited by Indiana", I ask myself "at what level"? Getting a form letter from Bill Lynch with a laser printed signature is about as special as being told "You may have already won 10,000,000 dollars"
I took my little brother (he's 6'5'' 300lbs. and moves well) to a Junior day at Michigan State. There were 150 other "recruits" there.
I figured out pretty quick what they were fishing for......preferred walk-ons...........
Most of these kids were there with their starry eyed parents.
As we left I turned to Patrick and said, "Right now, there are 149 kids and their parents who think they will be getting a scholarship to MSU. . . . . .I'm going to tell you the truth----you don't have a chance in Hell, and neither do the rest of em'."
D2's are very weak in Indiana (sorry to anyone out there), so he is going to a DIII program, where he has a chance to play, and more importantly, earn a nationally respected degree.
I'm thrilled for him..........as much as if he would've gotten an athletic scholly.
And that is the sentiment parents need to harbor.
