Spring Ball doesn't equate to success in the fall. The only reason I have a hard opinion on that is because we quit doing it all together about 6 years ago and have managed to still be successful.

Have them playing soccer, basketball, baseball, track, lacrosse...work to create a culture where your kids are excited to explore other athletic opportunities during their 4 years of school as opposed to grinding on football. For those that don't, some good suggestions are here on this thread. We have three football PE's during the day for S&C so we have our football kids year-round. They do the other sports after school.

As a staff we have talked about how hard we are on the kids this time of year. We are really hammering everything from the time it takes to get down the hill to the weightroom, to how we stretch, lifting technique, to the way we call it up. We are doing character/life talks once a week as well. We have done things the same way each off season and have been very successful but we feel like this is a different group of kids we have now.
We want to start incoroporating some fun stuff/things to reward the kids that are doing everything right because we know the keep your nose to the grindstone/getting hammered everyday approach will get old.
Just looking for ideas/suggestions!

I'll be speaking about the Jet Sweep and it's importance to our school district's program! KEEPJETTIN! is the brand name I have established. I have KEEPJETTIN! T-Shirts - License Plate (on my van), Bumper Stickers ect. to give to the kids. It's just a fun concept to help the kids buy into what we are teaching. See you in Herndon Va. this weekend! As Always - KEEPJETTIN! Coach Ray Olsen This is incredible.

No summer pay... I get about a $3000 stipend for the entire year. Assistants get about $1600 That's it. I can relate. I did the Off-Season stuff for 31 years because I was the HC, a football coach by choice, and I wanted to win-knew we wouldn't without it. Yep, these day's a well planned organized summer program is a non-negotiable to be successful.

What do you guys get for summer pay? No summer pay... I get about a $3000 stipend for the entire year. Assistants get about $1600 That's it. We went to admin and showed them how many hours we were putting into these kids in the summer and spending time away from our families and recieveing 0 compensation for it. We started winning alot after having our summer program the way we do, so I'm sure that helped pursade them. Also, several neigboring districts pay their coaches hourly in the summer so that helped as well.

Our whole staff is there 4 days a week in the summer 7am-10am. We get paid an additonal $10 an hour in the summer. It's not much, but it wasn't but just a few years ago that we were doing it for free...

It really seems like up until around a year or so ago that twitter was a great resource for football information and most of the ego's were set aside etc. Now it seems like sooooo many coaches are chasing clout and trying to sell "systems" that are made up of things everyone has been doing for decades! I guess, to me, it use to feel more laid back and more coaches banding together to share info. Just doesn't feel that way anymore.

The biggest fact of the matter is that alot kids will naturally choose the path of least resistance. Basketball and Baseball programs both need to be having legit offseasons that make them lift, and hold them accontable in every way possible. If you don't have this, you will lose sevaral every year that just want to "focus on baseball/basketball" which means they don't want to work year-around.
Thats just my experience.

At what point do you decide to go to "plan B" ? When you put the offense together in the spring. Coachkeating nailed it. I mean, during the actual game. What dictates when you go to your plan b? What situation or point in the game? I know answers can vary.

We workout 3 days a week in season (monday/wed/sat). The kids workout/condition during their athletic period during the day and watch film/meet the days they don't workout. On Mon/Tues we practice for 2.5 hours until halfway through the season and we cut it back to 2 hours. Wednesdays are based on reps not periods. We do 4 O/D series each lasting 8 plays each and have a special teams in between them. On Thursdays we are helmets only and it's strictly walkthrough with a 2 minute drill on air at the end.
We have been doing it this way for about 6 year's now with success.

OC/Head Basketball/Head Track. Got a lot going on but I enjoy it. I NEED to go to bed at a decent time. I work 10-12 hours a day the whole school year. I use to take pre workout a lot. I have quit taking it two years ago though. I just take some caffiene in the mornings now. I have thought about the phone thing before. I have put my phone and TV in "Night mode." I've considered putting the phone up around 9 and just reading for a bit. So do you only coach? What is your primary source of income? And does your sleep have an impact on that? Could it be stress related? Sorry, I have 5 PE classes. That would be my primary source of income.

I just want to fall asleep like a normal person and not have to take anything! What even is normal? Do what works for you. What do you do for a job? Do you wake up feeling rested or no? If it's not negatively impacting your job and you feel good, I would say don't change anything. I go to bed between 12 during the school week and consider myself a pretty functional teacher. If I'm feeling extra tired I'll try to get to bed around 11, and some nights it's not til 1. But I like my alone time at night and I can do low-impact school work at that time or just relax or whatever. I don't have any kids so I sleep in a bit on weekends if I feel like I need it. Caffeine consumption can be a double edged sword. If you're waking up feeling groggy/unrested it can help you get moving for the day. But if you already consume a fair amount (do you take pre-workout?) it could have to do with why you're not falling asleep when you'd like to. I will say that moderating my caffeine intake did not make me go to bed any earlier, but it did make me feel more rested after sleeping (anecdotal, I don't know if that is common). I'm a young coach (29) and I can't go to sleep out of season or in season without taking something. In season it gets worse, I end up waking up super early then I can't go back to to sleep. I workout 3-4 days a week and I coach basketball as well and normally play with them 7th period out of season.
Really don't know what the deal is. Doctor just told me to take something, but taking benadryl/nyquil every single night can't be that good for you. I've also alternated taking Melatonin at times as well.
I really just don't get tired until around 2am. I just want to fall asleep like a normal person and not have to take anything! Lol
Any advice appreciated.

You will have a much bigger effect on the outcome on Friday nights being the OL coach than actually calling the plays. You can have play caller that isn't the best but a good OL coach can make him look good!

When do you call it a day and fold the varsity program? I know all the stuff about quitting, gutting it out, being heroic in the face of long odds, Spartans, last great act of defiance, hold the rope, all that. I'm a full-time drinker of that cool-aid. But that's in the abstract. I'm facing this here and now and it's getting damn hard. I see posts where teams have 14 with 5 Fr/So and they play, others have 16 and they go to the playoffs. One of my coaches goes to the 'I played on a team of 15 and we went 5-4', but he's 68 from a small school in a galaxy far, far away. I'm sitting here right now with 18 bodies on varsity. 29 on JV. And I have tried to bring up JV to play but either the kid or parents refuse to come up, and I cannot force them to come up. I have 2 Sophs on varsity right now, both are likely to start both ways and special teams. Of the 18 bodies, 1 is a 115# girl (5 older brothers, Marine Corp. dad, I'm learning new words and phrases from her every day), 2 are soccer players that have never played before and are #150 or so. I just lost 2 seniors that have transferred to another school. They were captains and 2-way players. That dropped us to 18. One of my other seniors hurt his ankle in a tackle drill (half-speed, onto bags) yesterday and is out for at least 2 weeks. Had 15 at practice yesterday - 2 were working, 1 had a Dr. appt. Ended with 14 after the Sr. twisted his ankle. Anyway, on the personal side both of my dogs just died (true), my house is in shatters (kitchen remodel, true), and the light was in my eyes (false). Its indeed a sad tale of woe and misery. Legal Aspect: I'm in CA and yesterday I had to go to the dentist get a new crown done. They made me wear sunglasses/safety glasses during the procedure because somebody somewhere dropped an instrument on a woman that caused her to lose an eye. And, as explained to me by the AD if I knowingly put a player on the field that is not ready to fully participate, and that player is then injured as a result of playing, the (possible) lawsuit would be negligence and in the $5M range. I am not ready to take that risk. 3 seasons ago I almost lost my whole helmet inventory because a parent (also a coach) bought a 'safer' helmet (Virginia Tech document) and that would have made it "a safety equipment imbalance for the other players based on $$" so I would have had to replace the full inventory. The school attorney was about ready to impose that. The helmet sales rep was able to talk him down off the ledge, but it was very close. The school here is not fond of anything that sniffs at being possibly legal. I am in the position of having a couple of injuries and then putting players on the field that are not ready to play at the varsity level. I can hide them on offense, I can't hide them on defense. I have no real prospect of getting any players from the JV. I have no real prospect of getting players from the school, the players hit the recruiting trail hard yesterday and got a sophomore who is in special ed, and a Frosh that is a national level speedster apparently and the parents have said won't/will not/ain't gonna happen play varsity. When do you call it? Has anyone ever called it? I ain't looking for any Oh Poor Me stuff here. I want to proceed but that legal thing ($ payout x probability of happening is still a big number) keeps coming up as the ranks get thinner. I think you would be much happier coaching in the south.

Just curious what everyone does in-season on the weekends ? As a coaching staff, we’re looking into making some changes to be more efficient and try to most beneficial for staff and players. Here’s our current routine: Friday night - Game and exchange with next opponent Saturday morning - Bring players in at 8AM, watch film from previous night and go thru teachable moments. After 45 minutes or an hour, we have players walk/jog for 15 minutes with a nice long stretch afterward. Players usually are done by 9:30 and some coaches stay behind to begin game planning for next weeks opponent. Rest of weekend - watch scout film on Hudl and exchange ideas via group text/email. This year our HC wants us to grade every player, every play so we’re looking at possible changes. We are a smaller school with about 40 players 9-12 and a staff of 6 with many of us with families/small children. Any tips, ideas, strategies? I would use the watching film with players/walk/stretch time for a good workout. Saturday morning is the perfect time to get that 3rd or 4th workout of the week in. If players don't watch film on their own they aren't gonna pay attention on sat morning anyway. Just my opinion.

Not everybody that agrees to coach knows that it is going to become a lifelong commitment when they come out for that first year or two. I knew when I agreed to finally help the HS that it was something I wanted to get a taste of, at least for a few years. Little did I know what a focus it would become and how impactful it would become on my life. So, when did you know this was your thing? - Something you were meant to do and something you knew you’d spend many years of your life committed to? For me, that moment occurred in one instant in the back of an old yellow school bus. We were in the middle of a tough JV season and we had an away game that night. To be honest, I was pissed all day because I really didn’t feel like traveling pretty far away on the road for a JV game and getting back late on a week night with work early the next morning (traveling for work). I flat out didn’t want to go and got this weird thought in my head earlier in the day (is this really for me? Should I remain committed to this? Is it worth it?) For the first time I was questioning my time commitment to this game. Anyhow, we go to the game and win on a 4th and goal stop. The most unlikely little, slow, football deficient - kid on the team comes up from Cornerback to stuff a TB on a toss sweep on the goal line. The kids went absolutely nuts and rushed the field and rushed this kid. No way Joey freaking made that play to win the game, no damn way!!! The kids were wild over the victory but mostly wild over their boy Joey getting it done! It was incredible to see how happy they were for a teammate that they realized struggled. It was a powerful powerful thing to see. On the ride home, after much celebration the kids go silent and it’s dark and peaceful. I’m the only one awake in the back of a stinky ass yellow dog school bus late on a Monday night. I happen to look out the window and up to a huge glowing moon and in that moment the big man hit me with a thought from nowhere “I could have you anywhere in America looking at this moon right now and I have you on the back of a stinky JV bus late on a Monday night, and this is exactly where you need to be.” That was the moment I realized coaching young men and this game was the best possible thing I could be doing to make an impact on the lives of others and my own. I knew when I got off the bus that night that I was, in fact, exactly where I needed to be. Thanks for the space to share and I look forwarding to hearing other folks stories. When I was 12 years old (no kidding) & coached my own Youth League Baseball team (& played First Base). I was 'hooked" from then on. This is the most aceback76 thing I've seen so far. Lol Love it!

I think everyone has gone a little overboard with the core values and culture speak on twitter and what not. If you talk to the kids about what it takes to be a good person, a good teammate and a good player then writing them down probably won't do much more. We don't have posters or make kids memorize them but there are standards we expect them to meet and they know what those are.

We lift and do special teams in the morning. Then in the afternoon we meet for 20 mins with groups then practice 24 periods.
