We just had a JV game monday night and they won, which is great! However, after talking with some kids, it seems as though my JV staff implemented a new formation that is completely different than what the varsity is running. Varsity runs a form of the spread, and the JV implemented an "I" formation. They implemented the "I" formation because they were having trouble with the new blocking scheme, and it was difficult for them to understand. We have worked very hard with this and to just change it without my approval or even knowlegde p@##@# me off.
My question to you, am I over-reacting here, because I am very upset. I feel that all the work that I have done over the last year and a half is for nothing.
Do I have a right to be upset??? Suggestions???

We do leaderhips training in the spring and summer for all jr's and sr's Do a senior retreat at the beginning of the summer to unite the seniors. Also have a healthy dose of games and fun time in practice. Would you be willing to share some of your games and activities??

I was just wondering how many coaches utilize team building and character building activities into their daily practice plans? I was also wondering where some of you get your information on team building activities and if you would be willing to share some of those activities that you do.

Mike13,
Was your character building program called "Coaching to Change Lives"?
In your character program, are you 100% totally committed to that program or do you do just bits and pieces???

new to the board here but really enjoy reading the post from you guys. you guys that have been part of a successful program talk to me about what it is that helped make yours successful. i am going on 6th year at a school that had only one winning season and one 5-5 yr in 10 years previous. we have become competitive (4-6,4-6,5-5,6-4,4-6) but have not been able to top the hill and make the playoffs. looking for any ideas whether x's & o's, team building, practice organinzation, weight program etc. to put us over the top. play in very competitive region, (4of 8 teams have played for a state title in last 6 years). small school, only 200 kids in 10-12th grade. a lot of 2 way players. young assistants (who don't always agree with how things are run). only 3 varsity coaches this year (including me) 2 jr. high. really looking for things your hs coach did or your program now does that gives kids a mental boost. any tips greatly appreciated. I can easily relate to what you are saying. I have just taken over a program that has been not very good for many years. Last conference championship was 1972. I was able to pick 2 coaches that have been great so I have that covered. I guess my question is how do you get the community and parents to buy into your program since there really hasn't been a tradition here in quite some time. We have a weight-program in place, we are doing a speed/plyometric program, we are trying to do outings with the athletes and parents. What else can I do here to help. If you would like more details pm me. Any advice that you have would be greatly appreciated because I truly do want the best for the athletes and the program.

Why can't you do both? Why can't you teach the HS "O" and "D" and also teach the fundamentals.

I am in the hunt for a new lineman sled, old one is about 15 years old. What are the sleds that you like and why??? Been searching and found that Rogers, Rae Crowther, and Gilman seem to be popular. Just interested in what you as coaches would suggest and why? Thanks for your input in advance.

I love that idea. Do your coaches get involved with the text or do you let team captains/football players come up with the text.

Perfect world, I coach in a high school and have no teaching responsibilities and allow myself a little pay increase. Don't get me wrong, love my teaching job, but it would be nice for a while not to have to worry about lesson plans, unit plans, curriculum, etc and focus my time just on football.

Thanks for all the replies. This has been going on for years before I got here. I understand the reason for the coaches before me to walk away. They have never been happy here with any coaches and it has to stop.
My biggest complaint is this is supposed to be a positive environment for my players and it is not that way with the parents and fans. It has definately got to the point where it is affecting me personally as well as the rest of my staff.
I appreciate your inputs and we are in the very early stages I hope of putting something together for next year in terms of conduct on the sidelines with the fans.

How would you or what suggestions do you have to get them off the sidelines?

Do your wives or relatives go to the games? The reason I ask is because my father will NOT go to another game.
My wife will not go to another football game either? My wife took my 5 year old daughter to our last football game and she had to leave during the 3rd quarter due to vulgar language and parents degrading our football team. I enjoy having my family members their to watch what I am doing and what I spend so much of my free time working on.
I completely understand that a HC and his assts will be in a crossfire for this and that, but at what point do you say enough is enough. I feel sorry for our true blue fans and most importantly our kids on the sidelines that have to listen to the comments from the "critic" section.
Keep the advice coming it is GREATLY appreciated and allows me some time to vent. Thanks!!

How do you handle parents who are just downright degrading to your football team, players, and coaches?
I have parents who stand on the sidelines and swear up and down F^&%ing coaches, F&*^ing so and so. Pieces of Sh&t.
They stand so close to our players on the sidelines, I can only imagine what they are thinking.
I have asked for advice from my superiors and the best they can give me is handle it yourself. How do I go about doing this? What are things I can do because this is driving absolutely insane!!!
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
