I was just wondering how many coaches utilize team building and character building activities into their daily practice plans? I was also wondering where some of you get your information on team building activities and if you would be willing to share some of those activities that you do.

We have quote of the week that is the theme for the week.
We do leaderhips training in the spring and summer for all jr's and sr's
Do a senior retreat at the beginning of the summer to unite the seniors.
Also have a healthy dose of games and fun time in practice.

Sometime during 2-a-days have the team stay over in the gym. Kind of a Remember the Titans type thing. I local team does that the Thursday before the Saturday scrimmage. They practice Thursday then lock them in, practice Friday AM then go home. He said it has been a really good experience for them.

We have weekly themes that each coach is responsible for. When it is the coaches week, we will make up a bulliten board, theme cards for each kid, and any activities they want to incorperate into the week.

During 2-a-days we have the "fun time" try to have one 10 minute session a day of 7 on 7 for every one, some type of relay where we get them dizzy and then run, will play some dodge ball, will go the swimming pool on break.

Has anyone heard of the game "Bring um Back Alive"?
Get into the wrestling room. O vs. D or whatever teams you want to make. The two sides crawl on their hands and knees to the middle of the mat...
The object of the game is to "steal" someone from the other side. The team that gets the most people on their side wins. Builds team work. Sometimes it is hard to get someone by yourself. You have to grab the person and bring them back. They will fight to get back to their side and their team will be trying to get you. It takes strategy. You cannot go across the designated mid point to go get one of your team members....they have to fight on their own to get themselves out of "trouble". Builds character and it also will show you, as the coach, who will fight to the death to not get taken by the other team.
Extremely fun game...

Some things we do: 1. Senior leadership program- 5 weeks (going on now)- Set team policy (under my direction), community projects, leadership skills, set conditioning (seniors run every Wed.), season goals 2. We also do some conditioning at the pool; dodge ball or "all-pass" football is one of our conditioning days. 3. This year we are doing an 8 mile drive: we are going out to a pasture and will basically run plays for 8 miles (1 section... we'll have to turn around a few times). Start at 8:00 AM, have a BBQ at noon, then play paint-ball- then finish the drive... I hope that goes well. 4. We do locker room / wt. room clean up by class... haven't had any "cleanliness" issues since we started that.
In the past we have done: lineman challenges, bowling night (backs vs. line)... any excuse to get teammates together works for us.
As far as character building goes, I really think that team expectations and the nature of the game and what is necessary to do to be successful lends itself to character building as much as a lot of "programs". For us, being a responsible member of a team is probably the biggest thing we do to promote character.
