Run your plyo/stretching lines from sideline to hash with your defensive players on one side and offensive on the other.

We have a sophomore that started the first varsity game last year as a freshman and was pulled from the varsity about half way through the season because he just was not the player he started the season out as.
So far this season he has shown no improvement and has actually gotten smaller in size.
Have any of you gone through this with a player? What could be some alternatives for this kid?

We are having this debate on our staff now. We have a kid that is probably the best back on the team who is a freshman but we also have returning backs that started last year. Now we won't know what the kid is really made of until the bullets start flying but there is almost no doubt that he will be playing on fridays.

I think it depends on the type of pass pro they use. If they are more of a pocket team I would use the big boys. If they are a sprint out.bootleg type team go with the quicker guys.

Guy I played with in college would make himself puke right before every half because he said the rush got him ready for battle.
Same guy later on was running from the cops in a stolen car while drinking and driving.
What a rush I guess.

I understand you position as AAU basketball is big here and a lot of our kids think they are big time basketball players. Problem with these kids is that they lack the ball skills to be big time college basketball players but are so athletic that they would more than excel on the football field.
I personally think that AAU basketball is just another excuse not to lift weights (except for those kids that are being heavily recruited by D-1 schools across the country).

Sounds like you've covered many of your bases. Is the entire program changing to the SW (middle school) Frosh, JV, Varsity? What priorities do you have for your implementation plan? We're in a similar boat changing from Power I to Spread after about the same time and a few state titles. Kids are excited though. Yes the change would be from top to bottom. Priorities would be reps for the centers and backs daily pre-practice. Understanding how the base blocking scheme relates to our previous offense. (We ran some Unbalanced line at the end of the season last year which should also help since we will go unbalanced.) Daily ball handling drills, working on double teams, down and g scheme awareness, etc.

Thanks coaches that sounds great. Anyone ever run the Q Power if there are only 2 in the box at the center? Sounds like a great play if you can put your best 2 blockers in front of your best runner. It doesn't always have to be the QB.
Awesome play concept against many defenses. Too many options and too easy to read.

Changes for our season: SW offense for the first time of a 27 year power I coaches career. (Which we are going to call it the "multiple shotgun" to make the kids and parents think we are getting fancy.)
Young, loyal staff that is willing to be done to win. Entire staff has focused on the SW this off-season and built an offensive scheme that should be easily translated to our players. We show them film of the single wing and they can already call the plays based off of what they already know from a power I standpoint. Already working with the centers on their snaps and our base blocking rules match-up well with our running game hole openings. Passing game is almost seemless with what we already go to with our passing game. Protections are seemless as well.
But as we all know to well that your scheme might be tighter than a bullfrog's butt but the bottom line is if you do not have the horses to go to the race you better be able to coach em up.
Can't wait to see if we as a staff has what it takes. 3 weeks...

It looks something like this: ----------Y--T--G--G--T------------------------C------------------------------X -----------------Z---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------Q-----------------------------------H --------------------------------------------------------F--- Thanks for the formation coach but what else is there to the play?

Swinging gate. There are DCs out there who still don't teach how to defend it. What is the swinging gate?

If you are talking up tempo no huddle then I say start day one of practice with a 2-minute period with nothing but wristbands. Once at the beginning of practice and once at the end.
It will become second nature.

Have any of you run the Single Wing with wide spilts? When I say wide I mean 2 feet in the A gaps and 3 feet from B to D gap.
If you have and it wasn't successful what were the reasons?
Thanks in advance.

Definately believe that if you have the certain type of athlete that can play the slot and in the backfield, you need to utilize these types of players into your throwing uncovered schemes and into misdirection plays such as reverses, split screens, etc.
QB has to be a play maker. I like a lot of what WVU and Florida does with their skill guys. Find create ways to get those guys that are your 2nd and 3rd RB/QB/WR guys the ball in open space.
Thats the name of the game in the spread, spread the field and get your playmakers the ball in open field.

What about R-Rod at Michigan??? Should be interesting to say the least. Now Michigan and Illinois running similar offenses in the Big Ten. Michigan will definately be going through some growing pains with the new offense especially since they won't have a Rich Rod type QB in the first year.

To add to the colors and numbers ideas...
The college I played at we had hand signals for each of the four different columns and a number attached which gave a certain play in each column. The NASCAR column was both hands on the steering wheel, the DRAGSTER column was a foot dragging on the ground, the BUSCH column was drinking from a can and the INDY column was one hand on the steering wheel.
To simplify it even more we attached certain plays to each column such as NASCAR = run between the tackles INDY = run outside the tackles BUSCH = Dropback pass/Sprint out DRAGSTER = screens/draws/special plays... Makes it simple for the skill players and lineman.
Not to mention that the wristbands are great for no huddle and 2-minute offense.

Our HC basic shows plays that he feels we either would all praise or all blow a gasket over. Basically those 6, 7 or 8 plays that decide a game. We watch more opponent film than our own.
Out of opponent's film we show cut-ups of their favorite plays out of their favorite formations.

I understand why you would feel that way but there are a few factors that I feel you have left out in your thought process. 1.) WVU still has Pat White, who could possibly be the best player in college football. WVU has been living off the offense for the past few years and ever since he took over the QB spot he has been the key to WVU's success. Not to mention they have the entire O-line and Noel Devine back who will be making a ton of noise this year. WVU will not miss Slaton this year bc Devine he probably going to be better in the long run. 2.) The coaching hire I will agree was a knee-jerk reaction but the assistant coaches they have gone after and hired make it all worth it in my opinion. They already have one of the better 2009 recruiting classes in the nation based on what former Urban Myer assistant Doc Holliday and Chris Beatty have done in the 757 area of Virginia. Mullen from Wake and Calloway from Appy State have both run the spread successfully at their former schools so there should be no drop off. Anyone that follows college football knows that the 757 has some serious football talent. 3.) Did I mention WVU still has Pat White for 1 more year? ;D I bet Tony Franklin would like to have Pat White about now! Alabama and Auburn were recruiting him as a DB, but in fairness, he wouldn't have fit in a traditional offense like they were running then as a QB. Then again, all the locals mis-evaluated Phillip Rivers too, and let him get out of Alabama, to NC State, and all the way to the NFL. I understand why WVU did what they did. It's just a hunch it wont work out. And I freely admit I know next to nothing about WVU football, but hope to make the game in Morgantown when Auburn plays them. I definately agree with you on all counts there. And I hope you get to make it to Morgantown, the atmosphere is almost comparable to an SEC school.

The real question is how do you Auburn fans feel about the butt whippin you are going to receive in Morgantown? Seriously though it should be a great game. Until they start playing the games and I know more about what Auburn's really got...I have predicted 10-2 with losses to WVU and UGA, and that still puts us in Atlanta which is fine with me. That's right now. I am getting a little feeling that WVU is going to have some growing pains this year, and personally, I think they acted in haste and over emotion by hiring the asst. coach they hired/promoted. I don't know anything about him though, and he may be great, but it looked like a knee jerk hire after the bowl game. Like they felt they owed him the job. I understand why you would feel that way but there are a few factors that I feel you have left out in your thought process. 1.) WVU still has Pat White, who could possibly be the best player in college football. WVU has been living off the offense for the past few years and ever since he took over the QB spot he has been the key to WVU's success. Last year I coached the DBs and had some serious injury issues. Joe Blow has to start the last game of the year, who was pretty athletic but as soft as a pillow and about as smart.
He makes a great pass break-up on 3rd down and is so pumped up he doesn't realize that the other team is going to punt. So guess what, Joe Blow isn't on the punt return team and when he realizes this HE TRIES TO GO OFF THE FIELD ON THE OTHER TEAMS SIDELINE. I was in the box and needless to say he got an ear full at halftime.

Our school systems policy is an automatic 10 day suspension and no participation in athletics during that time. Inner city school but it is not as much of a problem as you would think.
