No doubt. Thanks for posting this. That is the epitome of caring about your players.

I'm going with both Bud Light and Boulevard, along with about 4 plates of Rotel.

Absolutely...excellent post coach. I find myself being caught in the same thinking traps you are. I have a problem where I can't walk away from an argument. I feel like I need to prove that what I did was the best thing. I need to realize ignorance cannot be defeated and just focus on what those that matter think.

I would recommend getting him to a combine or two here in the U.S.
I would also put together a highlight film of him if you haven't yet? Maybe uploading one to Youtube would be the way to go so you don't have to send DVDs across the Atlantic. You can then email coaches with a link to his highlight.
What level do you think the kid can play at? Is he a D3/NAIA kid? D2?

I certainly didn't expect the thread to generate this much discussion, but I'm glad it did. I guess the word "code" might be better served changed to "expectations". I was just curious what the expectations were as far as what gear is worn at practice, etc. Sounds like most of you don't give much thought to it, but expect your coaches to wear something that promotes the program and use common sense when it comes to pants and shoes.

Incredible article. Him turning down an offer to coach at the D1 level says a lot about why he's in the business.

I know am not interested in sending any more of our kids to this school in the future. Your concern is well validated. However, I don't think it's fair to judge an entire program because of the experience one of your kids had down there. I would however judge the program by how those coaches handle it once it is brought to their attention. If they let it go, then obviously that's not the kind of leadership you want to send your kids to. If they apologize and handle it the right way, then I wouldn't close the door on them. The coaches cannot babysit these kids 24/7. They are college kids and drinking and partying happens on every single campus in this country.

I required my coaches to wear something that promoted our program whenever they are on the field. I think this sums up the expectation pretty good.

How many of you require your coaches or are required to wear certain clothing to practice? I know as teachers, we are required to dress a certain way and was just wondering how that carries over onto the practice field for you.

Great idea here. We're all on the same team when it comes to this kind of stuff. Have you tried contacting any famous coaches or players? I'm sure many of them would love to write some encouragement.

Absolutely. No point in keeping kids around that can't help you at all because don't want to sacrifice and do what's best for the team. Numbers are only good when it's the right kind of numbers. Warm bodies on the sidelines never won any games.

I hear ya, man...it's a tough call. We had a kid a few years ago that ran about a 5.6 and was convinced he was a LB. We talked with him about moving to guard, and he wanted no part of it. He ended up quitting because he couldn't see the field at LB. You've talked with both kids and they've told you they wouldn't play if they were put on the OL? Have you played the "I need my best football players on the OL" card?

Tough call and like you said, as a coach you hate to not reward the player for his hard work. However, my old high school coach once told me when I had outworked another kid for the starting QB job but ended up as a backup because he was just a better athlete than me at the time, "unfortunately, genetics play a role in high school football."
We say we're about teaching life lessons in this deal, right? Unfortunately, working your dick off doesn't guarantee you're going to be the best and win a spot/get a job, etc.
I would have him on every special team, and have him learn a few different spots. If there is an injury, you have someone you trust to get lined up right, etc. I believe with all my heart that good things happen to kids that work very hard, and he'll find a nice niche on your team.
Like I said, it sucks balls to have to look the kid in the eye and tell him he's just not good enough. Good luck with that, but if it's the right thing for your team then you have to do it.

I don't like having one having to be the Scout team (servicing the other). And it's usually JVs that get short shrift. For example, if Varsity is practicing Offense with JVs as opponent's defense - JVs are not getting any time on their own stuff during that period. Tough to make that up without having to practice longer. That's true...I thought that sometimes they could go down to the Frosh and scrimmage w/ them.....the other problem we face is our JV (for some reeediculous reason) play our UPCOMING opponent on Mondays That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. How can you expect to know what you're going to see? I know not much film study goes into JV games, but it's at least nice to know the front you're going to be blocking, etc.

I have read and heard how some of the Oregon fan base, and the, know it all media have questioned Kelley's game plan. They say he should have used the lay off time to come up with new things on offense. Why would the top offense in the nation discard what had gotten them to the NC game, or even try to install "new concepts"? I mean I guess, especially in hindsight, it's easy to say that they should have seen on film what they had to deal with, but on film is different than for real, and I suspect they'd seen what they thought was a stout DL some time this season..or a stud 3 Tech. You do what you do if it's working to the point of being 12-0 and playing for a NC? Do you not? Two things someone can always do better... 1) call plays 2) drive

What are you guys most excited about watching tonight? I'm particular excited to see how Oregon handles Nick Fairley. If they're maybe going to use their midline read option a lot in order to make him as much of a non-factor as they can.

Great stuff. We have a former coach at our school that still helps us with stats on Friday nights. I told the kids that he came to Missouri to help the Confederates fight in the Civil War and then just hung around to coach football afterwards. Many of them believe me.

So far a great game. First real stop of the game. Best game of the day without question. TCU having trouble stopping the power run game (Wiscy had 140 yards rushing with 4 mins left in the first half) and Wisconsin is having trouble with TCU's speed on offense.

I am curious to see what TCu does on defense too. Will it look like an old school 4-4? I think they'll a play a lot of the 2 Robber stuff, which will look like an old 4-4.

Yes (all of the above). West Coast-based Offense. Use lots of movement (H-Back). And their QB and passing game are underrated. Their OC Paul Chryst had a lot of time with Oregon State's Mike Riley before going back to Madison - former Badger QB. Thanks. I was reading up on him last night a little bit, after I read he is rumored to be targeted by Texas for their OC job. I imagine it will take either a HC job or a lot of money to pry him away from Madison given he played there and is from the state.

I haven't gotten much of a chance to see Wisconsin play this year. Are they a zone team, or counter/power/iso team? Or both?

Is anyone else as excited for this game as I am? I'm a Big 12 guy, but for a couple reasons I can't wait to watch this game this afternoon. This is true power football vs. a defense originally designed to stop the spread. I'm really excited to see how TCU defends Wisconsin.

We all have many reasons to be thankful, including the fact that we get a chance to coach the greatest sport there is. I've learned a lot reading and interacting with a lot of you on here. I'm thankful for this great site and the endless wealth of knowledge on here you guys bring.
For those traveling, be safe and enjoy your family, the food, and the football.

Like mentioned above, if you're the HC it is your job and responsibility to handle this. If you turn a blind-eye to it, you're doing your program, staff, and kids a disservice.

Love this thread. I don't think we do near enough of this stuff, obviously because time is always so valuable during the season we're so focused on how we're going to win Friday night. I'm very interested to hear what others do and when/how they make time for it.
