All week long:
"The tackle-over side of their formations is ALWAYS our strength call this week, fellas. Find #68 and #72 and we're setting our front based on them."
We repped this all week long as the team we were playing lived in tackle-over sets.
Half way through the game, we're getting gashed off-tackle and I cannot figure out why. I'm on the field and I don't have a decent angle to see the formation. I kept asking our eyes in the box what the hell what was going on and they didn't have a clue.
I watch film the next day: we set our front and coverage AWAY FROM THE TACKLE OVER/TRIPS SIDE OF THEIR FORMATION!! We had a 1 tech/9 tech combo and our Will LB aligned to that side and that was it. I immediately texted our guys in the box and asked them how in the hell they missed that. And, then I bawled out the defense when we watched film on Monday.
Good Lord.

Yeeeeesh...I will admit that I don't think I'm a very good booth coach; I need time to reflect and process much better through film...but I would like to think I would have caught that...lol!

I was the JV head coach and my OC (his name was Archie) was awful. Didn't know the system, didn't know which plays or players to go to in a given situation, just an all around goofball. I'd often correct his playcalling which drove him nuts. I had a really great DC and he hated the OC's guts. I swear, I was like Dr. Phil all season keeping the two from killing each other. The players loved the DC and they hated the OC, to the point that they'd clown him when he wasn't around. I hated it and I always put a stop to it but kids are gonna be kids so that's what they did. When our offense was on the field the DC would focus on his defensive guys, getting them prepared for when they'd go back in. When our defense was on the field Archie would freak out and just indiscriminately yell things like, "Watch the pass! Watch the run! It's going to number 26!" The DC and I were always trying to get him to shut it, but he wouldn't. Finally we were in the championship game and it was a dogfight. We had a kid we nicknamed "Stones" that was our middle linebacker that was literally 4'11" and 105 lbs but the toughest motherhumper on the field at any given time. Time was running out and we were trying to shut down their final drive and finish. Our DC was calling out instruction to a couple kids, adjusting them and the OC was hollering, "It's a sweep! No, it's a screen, gotta watch the screen! QB keeper!" and finally Stones just yelled, "ARCHIE, would you shut the eff up so we can hear?!?" It was said at the perfect time, split second where there was no noise and you could hear it throughout the stadium. Everybody died laughing, even the officials. Stones said it and then got right back into it and made a play. We went on to win. It's one of my favorite football memories of all time. So to the point, what makes me rage - frigging coaches that don't know what they're talking about yelling at kids during the game. That is a great story and told very well. I would love to see Stones play.

This team ran a ton of formations but they ALWAYS had a tackle-over side. We spent 20 minutes that week just going through formation recognition and lining up properly.

Coaches who show kids 20+ year old pictures of them padded up and steroided out when they were in community college.
Really? That’s what you have to do to get these kids’ respect? You suck at life.

"Football Mixtape" type of Twitter accounts with videos of kids doing bizarre 1-on-1 open field drills where they dance around in a circle with a ball in their hand and pretend its something that happens on a football field.

When a coach asks for info on something, and someone asks "why they want it?" Eh...if someone down in the dumps wanted info on Jack Kevorkian....I would want to know a few things. Point being (at least on this site) often much more can be taught and much more help can be given when those being asked also know the why. Also, knowing the why can help keep those asking from potential pitfalls.

Pretty sure that the suicidal arent coming here for enlightenment prior, but my point is that its not up to us to determine "why" someone wants information on football. You can either say yes or no or not even answer if you dont want. Its not like were the keepers of some great secret, though some like to think they are Were here to help, let them determine what is right for them or not

For example, recently in the weightlifting forum a coach who doesn't participate on this forum very much popped in and asked if anyone had the OSU or BAMA S&C programs. An extremely knowledgeable, well regarded, and successful HS S&C coach replied by asking "why would you want a program designed for 18-23 year old men possessing superior athletic genetics?" It is a very valid question, particularly given the propensity for those with less experience to not understand the difference. Wouldn't it be far more helpful to find out why? It the coach asking for info replies "I am looking for new ideas for mobility and recovery" or "I am looking to see how they balance their push to pull ratio" etc...well, then you can tell they need a different type of help than if he replies "Because they are in the playoffs every year and I want to copy their program"... Same with schematic questions. ---- Alexander Pope

I saw some of that discussion, Ill admit I didnt really read it , but if I recall the OP said he coached at the college level, It appeared guys assumed he was a HS coach, and of course someone had to ascertain WHY he wanted the info etc.. from there I stopped reading it , I usually ignore posts that just tail into argument , but that's neither here or there. I agree to a point, I think if someone asks for info on something its not our position as to determine "why" they are looking for it, give them the info or don't , make them aware of any potential pitfalls , if they ask your opinion, then tell them what you think "I'm looking for info on the spread" ..Ok no prob, just a word of warning etc...thats all that's needed IMO

You go line up over there, and run here...you line up over there...and run here.... " As far as that particular thread, even further proof. The coach boasted about all of the great athletes he had coached... and another coach chimed in that he was "the most successful coach here on the site"... so one would think they would be able to understand the power of the word WHY.

" Maybe, maybe not, depends on a lot of other factors, plus who are we to determine one's ability to coach, relatively new or not? I see what you are getting at , but i f someone asks for info on something its not up to me to say whether or not they are worthy of the info Plus lets be honest if someone really wants something Im pretty sure this wont be their last stop if they're really committed to finding it . Again different views, but if someone asks me for information, ill guide them to it, if they ask my opinion, ill offer it to them, its not up to me to wonder why they want something that wasn't mine to begin with well just have to disagree on it

If I go into Lowe's and ask, in an uncertain tone of voice, for a specific tool I'd expect the salesman to ask what I wanted it for.

If something were posted in an uncertain tone, then perhaps, but im talking about coaches who ask about something and the 1st response to their question is "why do you want to know etc.." Its simple, because they do, its, really no different than you or I at one point I would imagine. If I walk into Lowes, Im going to explain what Im looking to do 1st then let the salesman tell me where to find what I need, maybe its this area, but they dont ask you why you want a hammer.

I think when coaches ask why someone wants the information they are using it to help the OP get to his goal most efficiently. The analogy I have thought of as reading this thread is asking for directions. I just moved from Florida to South Carolina. If someone were to ask me how to get to Orlando, I would ask why they are going. If they were going for a business convention and just wanted to get into town quickly, I would shoot them along the interstate. If they were going for vacation, I would give them a couple detours of local sites where they could see some good attractions and find some good food. The "why" would make a pretty big difference in my response. I think the same happens on this board.

I don't know why but it rages me when teams brag about winning league titles at the JV and/or freshman level. There's a school in our league that has posted on social media for years about how good their lower levels are every week but they haven't made in the playoffs since 2013 and haven't won a varsity league title since 2009. A billion hashtags like #startingthefoundation #futureisbright. I literally saw one of their kids at the gym wearing a JV league title shirt. LOL We have a team in our league that does the same thing. They actually had rings made when their 5th grade team won a "championship" . Of course, these are the kind of guys who have 30 kids on their youth teams but the same 11 kids get all the snaps on both offense and defense. Same thing with their junior high and frosh-soph programs. And then they are always scratching their heads and can't figure out why kids quit before their junior year! They have all of these lower level "championships" but have won about 5 games in the last 10 years at the varsity level.

Apologies if this has already been brought up, but I find "signing ceremonies" for some kid who is going to play D3 ball particularly annoying. We have a couple schools around here that make a big deal about it. I always wonder, what exactly are the kids signing?
Just saw on Twitter the other day...some kid tweeted that he was "blessed to receive me 2nd offer from (small private D3 school that is going to charge $30,000/yr to play football) College.
