As mentioned in a previous post, some things announcers say makes me shake my head. Jesse Palmer is mine. Nebraska's defense is very good. But to suggest that they are good because they "pattern read" routes is asinine. He went on and on about this after the Texas game. Heck, all they are doing is playing cuts. We do the same and we are a small, not very good, high school team.
Most colleges play straight man free or cover 3/2. They don't switch or trade receivers. Especially in the Big 12. But Nebraska switches and Palmer thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. Just something that gets under my skin. What does it to you? P. S. It's hell being smarter than most people.

Bob Davie was killing me today calling midline veer a qb iso. I mean it kind of ends up as a qb iso if he pulls but he is also making a read on that play and those guys could not see that if it smacked them in the face. Davie even diagrammed it in slow motion and missed it.

Jesse Palmer is a dangerous new breed of announcer: pretty, tonally pleasing to the ear, and 100% brain dead content. My sister hates him because she's awesome and recognizes a person who can talk without saying anything, but I'm sure the general (less hateful/knowledgeable[take your pick ]) population loves his 'analysis'. We really need to clone Kirk Herbstreit and Keith Jackson and just have ~10 of them doing all the games, ever.

One of my main pet peeves is football announcers who can't differentiate between a "cut block" and a "chop block", or use the terms interchangeably. Really, it's not that hard to both get it right and explain it.

Davie kept calling Midline the QB duck play. I certainly don't know everything about option football, but I've never heard it called that except by him. Hasn't he said before that he wanted to run option but didn't thing the fans would accept it at Notre Dame?

Hasn't he said before that he wanted to run option but didn't thing the fans would accept it at Notre Dame? That just proves he's an idiot. Notre Dames will accept anything as long as you win with it. He obviously wouldn't know that given his tenure. I do kind of long for the days when I was blissfully ignorant of most of the stuff that was going on and could just listen to the men on the tv. I watch an option team now and critic how well the QB made the read. I sometimes have trouble watching a game for fun.

Could not agree more about Palmer!! IDIOT. Its like the network gave him a scouting report that said Suh is good and Nebraska pattern reads and he just kept saying it over and over. Also Steve Burline is an idiot...to have played college and pro football...these guys have really demostrated very little knowledge of the game. I actually don't mind Gary Danielson...but most of these guys are jokes.

Its like the network gave him a scouting report that said Suh is good and Nebraska pattern reads and he just kept saying it over and over. I'm like 95% sure this is the case. Somewhat relevant, but off-topic: the G-D song they've been playing all week is the most annoyingly insidious thing ever. I hate it and yet it was in my head half the night, except for when my date was in my lap.

LOL announcers are morons. I was watching the Navy game and one of the announcers (I wish I knew his name) mispronounced Quantico.

Bret Musburger and every other guy out there: Jet Sweep= End around or reverse Agreed! My wife knows very little about football terms. She's learned some things in the past few years since I started coaching youth. She saw a jet sweep and went, "Oh! Look at him Jet!". The announcer said something like, "There's so-and-so on the end around." My wife went, "Oh, I thought that was called a Jet." I said, "It is, honey. You're right. The announcer is just stupid." I don't know as much football as most of the people here. But, I know enough that I watch with the volume turned down. It helps. I have a friend that is quite knowledgeable about football, too. Neither of us think we are football gurus. But, we find it more enjoyable for us to watch games with the volume down. We talk about way different things than the announcers. And, we answer questions from our sons and wives as the games go along.

I can't stand most of those d!ckheads. I do have to admit I like Herbie and Musburger is ok. I just don't expect the news guys to know anything about football.
The one guy I do really really like to listen to is Chris Spielman. He picks out things that no one else can see, and the best part is he is totally frickin crazy.

Even tho they don't know an outside zone from an inside veer, it's still gotta be tough commenting on a play in real time. I usually have to run the tivo back a time or two just to see exactly what happened myself. To watch a play in real time and then immediately comment on the replay is tough, especially when you don't know the play call.

LOL, i was watching the game and thinking "the hell is he on about?" when i heard that. its frusrating because most fans hear what the announcers are saying and think they're learning something. like everytime a non-QB takes a snap its "here comes the wildcat!" on a good note though, the DT Suh for Nebraska sure is fun to watch

Our announcers are great.
WE run "no play" and every time we sent a guy in motion and didnt snap the ball they figured we had a mix up. Hilarious.
Then they make comments about us going for two point conversions, we converted 19/28 but they think we never seem to convert.
Then theres the big state channel games , they say "run up the middle" when we are throwing the ball. Nobody can find the football with our offense, they call out kids names (who have long since quit the team) as if they made the tackle?! Its just too much.

I heard Davie say that as well about the midline and I couldn't believe it. Here we have a former D I head coach and defensive coordinator who was calling midline "qb duck"? Amazing.
One of my dad's biggest pet peaves is announcers saying, "it was an end-around." Drives Him nuts!

The announcers in the Navy game were as well prepared to describe Navy's O as Missouri was to defend it.

I would like to invite all of you to come out to Detroit and listen to drive-time (3:00-6:00) sports talk radio out here during football season.
We have a guy who has 90% of Metro Detroit convinced that he is some type of football wizard because he knows all of the players' names in the NFL and is a Fantasy Football guru.
A couple of years ago he would openly campaign for Matt Millen's job as GM of the Lions, the sad thing is that I think he was serious.
Anyhow, it drives me batty listening to the guy and it's only made worse by the people who call in and say things like "you're the man, I don't know football like you do..."
Last year around NFL Draft time he would say things like "This player (D-Lineman) can't play in a 3-4 because he's not a 3 Technique".
Like a monkey with a gun he knows just enough to be dangerous.

It got pretty bad If they can not talk too much, give pertinent updates, and just not say too many stupid things. Apparently, the latter can be a difficult proposition I like that Todd Blackledge group Need more Erin Andrews and Lisa Salters

I think some of you guys take this way too seriously. First, as has been mentioned, doing play-by-play is hard. More importantly, the announcers aren't talking to us. They're talking to the vast majority of fans, who have a fair to nonexistent knowledge of the game and don't really want more. They just like watching football and are not there to see a clinic.
The announcers call Jet "End Around"? Hell, we can't even decide here whether it's Jet or Fly. What does the average viewer care?
Bob Davie calls a play QB Duck? I've never heard the term before but he WAS talking about when he was DC at Notre Dame so he got the term from someplace.
I have my gripes with announcers. I HATE it when they get the rules wrong. My pet peeve is when they gloss over a ST play to go into a commercial. It would make some mom and dad's day to hear their walk-on son's name on TV after a punt-coverage tackle.
Overall, though, the announcers don't bother me.

I know we're all experiencing college bowl fever right now but I like listening to Chuckie A/K/A John Gruden on MNF.
Creditable and doesn't throw players or coaches under the bus like many of the derelicts that have been mentioned on this thread, so far. He's current in his knowledge and could outcoach most of what he sees on the field yet he doesn't take shots. He could be this generation's John Madden.
As far as college is concerned, I cannot stand the pairing of Griese and Spiehlman. Griese is standoffish with Spiehlman and Spiehlman can't complete a full thought to save his life (probably too many hits) as I think he's almost intimidated by Griese's big words. Apart from each other, they're ok. There's just tension between them that is distracting for me.
