We won 32-21. First drive we went on about a 8-10 play drive which I thought was pretty impressive. Should have scored quicker, don't think my line was coming off like they should have. But a lot of that's on me, I did a lot of mental work with them this week and I think it showed.
On a side note, that was one of the worst experiences I've had coaching for some reason. I got caught up in everything around the game instead of coaching the game itself. I was flipping the board for our no huddle, trying to make sure everybody's getting their snaps (I seem to be the ony one worried about that), plus I can't see crap from the sideline. That's the first game I've coached in about ten years where I wasn't in a press box where I could see everything so I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. I've still got a ways to go.

Anybody else get started today? I feel good about our team, they're ready to play some foosball. I'm expecting a mini cluster * this afternoon tho. Last week after the jamboree one of the 3 counties dropped out of the league which took 4 teams out. So they had to redo the schedule and it looks like some people aren't sure when they play.
Anyway, good luck to all.

No idea about the playbook and ball bag. Prolly so they could ask you to turn 'em in if you got pissy. The ball bag at least, idk about the playbook.

Scored on our 1st, 3rd, and 6th offensive plays. They scored on the last play of the game. I'd like to say it was on our MPP's, and it mostly was, but they went around our #1 end to do it. He got sucked in on a fake.
Also got to hang around and watch some of the competition. I think we've got a decent talent advantage over most of them. There's also a couple of pretty good teams. I'm excited. We open the season against our big rival this Saturday.

Oh wow. Winning like that and getting complaints that warrant a meeting? Good luck man!

I'll go through it best I can, and try to get some pics up in a couple days. It was made almost entirely of stuff I had sitting around the shop, so it's pretty makeshift. I took two 8 foot pieces of 2" pvc pipe and drilled 1" holes about an inch from each end. I put two 3/4" pieces of pvc (3 ft long each) in these holes so it's a big rectangle. Then I had on old vinyl banner that's 8 ft x 3 ft, and using those little tarp bungees (little plastic ball with a bungee loop that goes through the grommet and around the frame and back on itself) I strap the banner to the frame, and the tension from the bungees keeps it all together. (It gets a little complicated here, but hey, it's a free chute with what I had available ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) )Now it needed to be a couple of feet longer, so now I took some 1.5" pvc and cut it into 4 pieces, 18" long each. I drilled the same 1" hole about 6" up on each of these, and they slide inside the ends of the 8 footers, the holes line up, and the 3/4" goes in both of them. So the sides are basically 10 feet long now, and I stick 'em on a couple of saw horses and they're good. One last thing I did was put a screw on the top of the saw horses where the pipe rests on them, and drilled a small hole in the pvc so it fits down over the screw, it helps keep everything in place. I'm sure this prolly makes very little sense, but I'll try to get some pics up soon and hopefully help explain everything.

I've been doing the tennis ball drill. Also made a makeshift chute out of some pvc and sawhorses, it doesn't brain them if they get too high, and they can actually move it with light contact, but it gives them a visual and somewhat physical reinforcement of how low we want them.

Thankee. I figured it was just a checklist with somebody tracking it.
Another question, what's your philosophy on playing time after everybody has their minimum in? Say you get everybody rotated in and have all your minimums met in the first half, but it's still a close game after halftime, do you just stay with your rotation for everybody or do you roll the studs out there? Also, is that a stupid question? Now that I see it written down, my reaction is to put the best players out there and win the game.

Istanbul was Constantinople, now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople. Been a long time gone, Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks

How do you track everybody's plays to make sure they've gotten the minimum in? I'm assuming there's one person in charge of it? Coach? Other helper?

That's interesting. I would be most interested to see the timing of a quick veer dive behind a wedge.

I love seeing the light go off in a kid's head. Had one pup get through for a sack, and when he turned around and looked at me his eyes were big as saucers. He knew he did something good but wasn't real sure what it was ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) He sprinted about 20 yards to me and jumped up for a big bear hug! That was awesome.

Have switched to a wedge blocking concept for all run plays. Lead goose on all run plays is either the center, playside guard or playside tackle. Easy to learn, easy to teach - have to see how it goes on the field. Interesting. Would like to know what kind of results you get.

Reid Roe is Darin Slack's Youth Camp Coordinator. He may want to do some C4 or R4 stuff for youth coaches.

Really? I got an email from the rep yesterday that telling me about the team dealer stuff. He directed me to the individual website but the price for the bands was like $8 there.

I've checked them out Dave. They are a team dealer and you have to place a $500 order to get that price.
I was thinking if we could come up with a verbal code we could put a wristband on the QB and let him call the play, that way we wouldn't need a full team's worth of wristbands.

Anybody got any good alternatives for wristbands? We would like to no-huddle but the cheapest wrist coaches we can find are $6+. Just don't have the coin to pop for them right now. Any other suggestions? Can 10-12 year olds learn a verbal code system?

Don't make a decision to appease the parent. What happens when the next one calls, and the next one, etc... Set the example now. Don't be a jerk about it, do like the other guys have said, but don't let him make decisions for your team.

Not in our league, bob. Also, stuff like taking a knee while MPP's are out there doesn't count against their required plays either (except at the end of the game I think, but we have a rule that if a player hasn't been in yet by the start of the 4th q then he goes in then till he gets his required plays).
Dave- went back and reread the post on your blog where you break down the number of players and what categories they fit into (studs, good, average, mpp). Great stuff, looking at it from that type of concept helps me see it better as how to get the best team on the field both ways while making sure the lesser guys are still contributing.

Do you play your MPP's on one side of the ball or both? Pros? Cons?
Btw, is it MPP or MMP? What's it stand for? Thx.

Brophy sold me on 2 platoon a long time ago (if you want some good reading, look up some platooning threads from the early days of coachhuey). Having said that I'm not sure I would ever go 100% 2 platoon, I've always had at least a couple guys on the team that won the DNA lottery and need to be on the field. But I would love to 2 platoon the majority of my team.
Btw, we never truly platooned, but did the best we could to 2 platoon the OL and DL.

I agree totally that they shouldn't constrain either one. But if they're going to restrict one side of the ball, they should even it up for the other, was what I meant.

They should let the defense adjust or not allow unbalanced.

It's not like that at all. If it's about not having a chain gang then just mark the 20 yard zones and don't require one. Don't have 2 sets of rules.
