I'm excited to be joining a new school and new staff. I will be coaching varsity offensive line at Grayson HS. I think we've got some great kids, great coaches, and a great community.

You don't need to be their friend but they need to know you love them and care about them. Show them that you value them for more than just what they can do for you on the football field. They don't care how much you know unless they know how much you care.

If it is a school within driving distance I would suggest going to their spring coaching clinic. This is a great way to meet the coaches face to face and establish contact and for me personally has allowed me to have conversations with some great coaches. From there I would specifically make sure you talk to the coach who recruits your area as well as someone in the football offices who is responsible for setting up meetings.

I'll definitely be checking this book out. I'm trying to focus more on learning defense this offseason. Coach this book is very coverage specific..my first book is more general..both are on Amazon..thx for your support Then I guess I'll need to get both!

I'd love to hear from the coaches at Valdosta State, preferably from their offensive side of the ball. They broke a number of records this year.

Becoming a better O line coach. Tried using McNally’s double under/ tip of the spear type blocking technique this year and I felt it made us worse and less physical as linemen. Looking into the Ed Wariner DVD’s and looking for other ideas on how to get my O line to be tail kickers for 5-6 physical seconds each snap. I need to become a better line coach if I want my kids to be better linemen. You should look into Lecharles Bentley's material; he is on the cutting edge of offensive line performance. I plan on visiting Samford University to talk to Coach Chris Hatcher about the Air Raid he ran at Valdosta State in the early 2000s. I figured that's about as close to the source as I'll get without flying out to Pullman.

I would work on ankle mobility and lower body flexibility first. From what I have observed in my short coaching career, chutes might get the kids to have low pad level but their leverage is terrible because they're often simply bending at the waist which means their heads are down, feet are too wide, and their arms and hands are out wide and not in line with their hips. Low pad level is important but not more important imo than proper leverage which is a result of lower body flexibility, a good stance, drive/catch, and proper technique in the pressure to pressure phase. If you're into any of teh LB stuff a lot of this probably sounds familiar.

After our spring football is over we have a week where the 8th graders from our feeder middle schools will come out and work with our 9th grade coaches. They do not wear pads and each practice only last for a little over an hour; we are focusing on introducing them to our language and teaching them fundamentals and drills. At the end of the week we get them together and run 4-5 of our base plays on offense. This gives us the chance to start evaluating players and it also gets the kids excited.

I was just at the first Glazier clinic in Atlanta and had a great time and learned a lot. I'll also be driving up to the second one in February just for Saturday.

Sounds like a great clinic but I don't think I'll be able to make it out there from Georgia unfortunately. Any chance you guys could record the clinic and put it on DVD or maybe send out copies of presentations? I'd be interested in paying for something like that.

I think there are some very good points in this thread about how many coaches miss the point of buying a system from someone else. It's not about the actual plays but instead it's about providing an organized structure to everything you do from your nomenclature to your practice schedule to your off season routines. If you're in a program with a smaller staff I would think getting a proven system would be a great idea because now that eliminated much of the leg work of how to organize everything and you can focus more on just coaching your kids.

We've been dealing with a similar issue as well this year. We have been struggling on the offensive side of the ball and it doesn't help that our fans have become spoiled with success over the years. They've been calling for our OC's job, saying the OL coaching (me) is just terrible and a whole bunch of other nonsense. Honestly though all those fans don't bother me at all because I know how little they know. For example one supposedly wise and informed parent posted on a message board that our offense was based on the Zone Read and we were struggling on offense because we weren't making good read; but the funny thing is we haven't ran zone read all year lol!

We reward our POTW with a special certificate each week as well as little footballs with the team logo on it and they go to the booster club meetings every Monday after practice where that player's position coach introduces them to the crowd and talks about their performance briefly. We are also fortunate to have support from one of the local restaurants that awards each POTW a free meal. Also our scout team POTW gets to be a captain for the game on Friday.

We actually don't have a #1 jersey in our program. We will have over 100 kids on the team most years so all of our numbers are worn but seniors get first pick at jersey numbers and single digits and teens are very popular but honestly many of our kids just keep the same number they were issued as 10th graders after moving up from the 9th grade team. My OL hardly ever ask about jersey numbers so that's nice for me lol.

I enjoy being able to experiment a little bit without any real consequences. I also love that it means I'm done coaching girls soccer for a while lol.
I'm not a big fan of some of the anxiety that comes along with trying to replace starters but on the other hand it is a great feeling when you see a kid who's never started before step up and show you that they're ready to step into that role.

I just need to vent about one of my classes this year. I've only been teaching for three yearsw so I acknowledge the sample size is small but this is the first time in my limted experience that I hve had a class, not just two or three bad students, but an entire class that just makes me not want to be a teacher anymore. This is a class of about 18 students and I struggle daily with all but maybe 4 of them. Now not all of them are behavior problems per se but of that 18 there are 12 of them that are going into the final exam next week who must pass the final in order to pass the class. I have never had numbers that high; I mean I don't have 12 people in danger of failing for my other history classes combined!
But what frustrates me the most is that when I stood up in front of the room and laid it all out for them and explained their dire situation in a broad sense... THEY LAUGHED! They actually thought it was funny that the majority of them are failing the class! How do I work with kids like this? I know some of you have crazier porblems than this but for a young teacher like myself, this is the first time I've had a class as a whole that makes me feel like banging my head agains the wall and wondering why I chose to be a teacher.

Don't be afraid to tell your kids that you love them. Actions obviously go a long way but sometimes it's nice to just say it out loud to them individually and as a group. Go to their extracurricular events outside of football and make sure they see you. Acknowledge them when you see them in the hallway even if it's just a simple "What's up Jonny?" Make a big deal about their achievements in the weight room, on the field, in the classroom, or in any other aspects of their life you know of. Also if you can manage it, have them over for dinner a few times during the season (Unfortunately this is one thing I can't do living in a small apartment. 20 OL would not fit in there lol)

We meet at 2 pm and first have a staff devotion and then talk about the previous game including going over each position's performance and grades, special teams, nominating POTW, etc. After that, around an hour or sometimes more, we break up offense and defense and the OC usually has me and the other OL coach go and look at some specific things as far as defensive front and the run game go. We will have all already watched the film before meeting but this is a time to just go over things with a fine tooth comb and look for specific things the OC wanted to do. We will then eat dinner as a staff around 5:00 before finalizing the gameplan with the HC. We typically leave sometime around 7 - 7:30.

Here in GA we have traditionally had GISA for private schools and GHSA for public schools but in recent years there has been an influx of private schools moving over to the GHSA. However private schools in the lowest classification in GHSA have a separate playoff bracket.

Sorry for the double post but one thing I would like to add on I just got in my email is Coach Mickey Conn's presentation on "Building a HS Football Program". This was an excellent talk and in my opinion the best one of the clinic. drive.google.com/open?id=0Bz5AQYsSJNUwZWd2c1ZOenZvWE0

One thing that I love that I saw from I think the University of Houston was on Wednesday or Thursday they gather everyone around in a big circle and the coaches call out an offensive guy and defensive guy of equal size/strength/ability. The two guys basically go one on one who can put the other on their back and the winning side gets to keep this WWE type championship belt and carry it around at practice or school or even on the sidelines for games.

i need to find an orphanage that has a football team so i never have to talk to a parent who just doesnt get why their kid doesnt play/get the ball more ever again the bruce wayne academy fighting Bats You joke about this but my senior year we actually played a team from an orphanage. They were actually pretty good and had an absolute stud at QB. It was also the first time our 75 year old DC had ever really played against a spread team. Turns out 7 in the box with 2 deep safeties isn't very effective against 2x2 spread. My mom felt really bad after the game when she was asking why none of their parents bothered to show up for the game.

Aside from the ongoing quest to "find and better one's self", my big scheme thing is finding a new Tackle Over set I like. Were a spread team so we have 1 T-Over, wildcat set we use for goalline. Its good stuff and we got a lot of mileage out of it. Looking for another wrinkle to it and another unbalanced look that I like. We used several T over sets over the last couple of years. PM me if you're interested.

Zone blocking, Air Raid passing game, building an off-season training schedule/program building, and the HUNH are the four main topics I'm studying this off-season.
