How close should you be with your players? Belichick style or a players coach that everybody likes?

Be who you are. If they like you, fine. If you worry about it you'll be out of a job.

How close should you be with your players? Belichick style or a players coach that everybody likes? You are their coach, not their friend. If you feel you need to be friends with teenage kids, you need to get out around some adults more. Doesn't mean you don't care about them, a great coach cares deeply for his players, but you are not there to be buddies. Respect earned from a kid goes a lot further when trying to mold a young persons life than being pals.

My point about Belichick is just to point out that you seem to have a preconceived notion of his (or other's) relationships with the players that probably isn't very accurate.

College age in the U.S Ah.. ok. Just thought that was an unusual way to put it if you coached college ball. Regardless, just be you. Let things develop organically.

My experience is the kids aren't looking for a 30, 40, 60-year-old guy to be their friend ... they've got friends their own age. Even today, I think, kids want to be coached. Doesn't mean you can't be close.

You don't need to be their friend but they need to know you love them and care about them. Show them that you value them for more than just what they can do for you on the football field. They don't care how much you know unless they know how much you care.

Be yourself but make sure that you're enforcing discipline at practice and demanding a high level of effort. I'm upbeat and sarcastic at practice but the kids know that I mean business when I warn them about their attitudes or poor work ethic. They figure that out real quick when I kick them out of a drill and their playing time gets cut to nothing (assuming they don't earn it back).

Be yourself.
Don't act older/younger than you are. Example: I'm 28. I don't act like a friend, but I know I can't act like dad either. I've learned that they don't care about your age, but they can see through when you're putting on an act (hopefully that made sense).
Maybe my "style" will change one day when I am older and have kids. But being more of a "big brother" works for me and I don't receive any less respect from our players than anyone else.
