They have 4 rooms going at once, a traditional wing t room, a hybrid wing t room, a spread room, and a defensive room. So although its geared to the wing T it has a little bit of something for everyone.

IN NC we are in the semifinal rounds this week. State finals next Saturday at UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, and Duke. We are fortunate enough to be playing in one of those semifinal games this week!

Some wear jerseys. Some wear whatever. Depends on the kid. Some of the jerseys are really tight and the kids are uncomfortable wearing them.

In N.C. 12 weeks to play 11 games. 5 rounds of playoffs. With basically 8 playoff divisions.

Generally speaking Monday and Wednesday shells. Tuesday full. Thursday just helmets. Been apart of teams that have just been shells all the time after preseason. Don’t have a problem either way. We do about the same thing either way. That being said last week we played a triple option team that cut DL regularly so we felt the need to go full pads all week and go live cuts. We felt that our kids were spent after that game. Now maybe it was because it was a tough physical game that we had to play really hard to win in the 4 qtr. but we felt like the full pads and the heat that week hurt our kids.

The most I’ve given up in a game was 63. But it could have been 103. Most in a quarter we were up 7-0 on the defending state champs after a quarter. Down 42-7 at half. Lost 49-7.

We call all the ones we are moving up into the office and speak with them one at a time. We make sure they understand that they are expected to be the scout team and probably will not get in the games. If they don’t understand that or agree to that then we let them go on to b-ball or wrestling.

A guy around here got fired once for pushing and possibly punching a kid in the hallway during a JV b-ball game. He was the football coach. And the kid was his son.

We have some waters, granola bars and bananas that we lay out on game day. Any left by halftime they are free to get it. But honestly most of them don’t care to eat. They would rather drink water and Gatorade.

We lift on gamedays. Idk how walking 6 miles compares to three sets of front squats and power cleans. But a little physical activity on game days is good. I just don’t know if that’s too much or not.

I create a call sheet. One side has their tendencies on each down and distance situation. The other side has my top 3 calls in each of those situations. But in all honesty I hardly use it. I already know the gameplan and know what I wanna call. And as the game goes on it becomes as much about feel as it does anything else.
For example, Friday we played an opponent who had should 13 snaps in 10 personnel in 3 films. But in the second half and we got up some they were in it a significant amount more. So we began to play a lot of man free and rush 5. This was not part of our original plan. But the game dictated it.

If you turn your practice gear in we wash it. If you don’t you wear dirty gear. We wash all game gear obviously.

We have done it a couple times when there is bad weather coming in on a Friday and we played them both Thursday night. Its hectic, chaotic, and not real fun. But my biggest logistical issue is, who supervises the JV during the varsity game if you are the away team? ? Do you not have JV Coaches? We havent had this issue, because we always have two buses (only two teams also) Frosh/Soph play at 11, finish game, get on bus go home. Varsity plays at 2, finish game, take their own bus home. No, we coach both. If you are a defensive coach you coach defense JV and Varsity. If you coach offense you coach both. In practice we do varsity O, JV D and then switch. Been that way my whole career.

I swear we play some teams that have an extra film guy whose job is to film a crap copy of the game. Bc there is no way their coaches are watching that mess. Now we only film two copies. A wide and an end zone. So what we watch is what our opponents get. Not to say our guys don’t occasionally miss a play or accidentally film the huddle and cut it off during the play. But generally our opponent gets a pretty good copy.

Unless you have a league by law requiring certain trade stipulations I’d say there isn’t a lot you can do other than reach out to their opponents and see if they have a better copy they might send you. It stinks but I’ve been there. Spread teams that throw it around send you a film with just the OL and veer or wing t teams send you a wide shot that was filmed from the moon so you can’t see the blocking schemes.

We have our kids in wt training class. We watch film or chalk talk for about 20-30 min every day after we lift. Monday’s we watch last game. Ties we watch O and D. Wed we watch special teams.

For us we stay after Friday. Wash uniforms. Do tackles. Watch a little film. Saturday’s are off. Coaches are expected to review and “grade” their positions. Sunday formal staff meeting. Kids don’t come in at all. Our kids lift in class during the school day.

I also agree with the lift early contingent. Up until this year I got up at 5. Lifted from 6-7. Made it very regular. Nothing ever got in the way that early. However this year my daughter started going to our middle school. So she rides to school with me so now I have to try to get it in during my prep period or study hall. Something always gets in the way.

Maximize your time by supersetting 3 lifts or so. Get more done in the same amount of time and get your heart rate up some. Like you said earlier two days is about when you can handle. Same here. So 2 days hit the majors you wanna hit....bench, squat, cleans, shoulder press, whatever.... then get a 3rd day in by doing biceps and triceps... even if you are sore, you can probably handle a day of curls, tricep extensions and abs..... Pick one of the weekend days and get 45 minutes or so of cardio in.

While I agree that drills can get old. When I was DL coach I always asked for more time. 15 min was never enough to get my 2 deep reps at basic drills like take off slant steps. Punch. Then work block destruction, reach, base, down, double, pass. Then work escapes. Now I don’t do a bunch of drills in 1 day that work on the same thing. I do one drill a day to work on a skill. But I try to have a few different drills to work on the same skill so that I am not using the same drill over and over and over. Which makes it somewhat less boring.
I try to teach all my drills in the spring and summer so I don’t have to take time to do that during season. The exception being if I have a problem that I am having to invent something to fix or I happen to see a new drill I really really like.
