Teams that bring heat off both edges against a fg/pat. Ive seen it multiple times with teams that do this where you have two kids running full speed in opposite directions and diving head first, where they crash into each other.... Yall are gonna put a kid in a wheelchair with that nonsense this is a serious pet peeve of mine as well... too many "Madden" Special team coaches out there...

The general lack of respect for special teams.
It's "important" until it's time to plan practice or coach it up.

Setting up the camera system! First off...I'm old. This is my first year back in coaching after a 20 year hiatus in the business world. When I last coached, game film was done on a VHS camcorder. I'm at a small high school in a small Midwestern state. This season I was tasked to set up this video system and things. Dear Lord! Should I have asked to attend a training course at NASA on how to set up this thing? Are these game video clips being beamed off some Elon Musk satellite? I'll admit, Hudl is a pretty useful tool, but I say give me a 42" tube TV strapped onto an A/V cart on wheels and a Cowboy Clicker any day! Ha! When I was last an assistant (I don't coach anymore) about 15 years ago, I was the video exchange guy. I have lots of memories of driving to some woebegone, cornfield-surrounded 4-way at 6am on a Saturday morning to meet my counterpart and switch tapes. And then get back it and the tape had a re-run of some tv show instead of the game.

When a team lucks into something trying do something else.
For instance, two years ago semi's. We lost in OT to a team with what now turns out to be 14 d1 kids on the roster. We go to kick a long FG (42 yards) which we could make. But called a fake. Shifted into a different formation to throw the ball to someone who should have been wide open. (We ran something similar three times for TD's in other games including state championship game last year).
Their now Clemson LB comes out from deep and stops the pass. Where in the heck did that kid come from and why was he back there? After watching film, he was back there to return a short FG ala Auburn/Bama kick 6 style. Damn.
What really sucks, is that it was also bad coaching. There is no way we were going to miss so bad that the ball didn't at least go in the endzone. Meaning the guy was never going to be able return the ball in high school. The stud should have been up there trying to block it. Or maybe it was great coaching. Anyways, pet peeve.

It's statistically more likely you'll be well short than any LBer is ever going to block a FG. I can't think of a single FG that was ever blocked by a LB. They're always linemen up the middle getting a hand up, or a DB off the edge. Did they send the other 11, or did they just never believe you were going to kick it in the first place? Sounds to me like they had done their film study. Me? I see you've ran a fake 3 times previously, I'm letting you get 3 and preventing you from getting 6.

Sounds to me like they had done their film study. Me? I see you've ran a fake 3 times previously, I'm letting you get 3 and preventing you from getting 6. Guess I tried to make the story too short. We have run a play where we uncover a TE lined up at tackle. Won a huge region championship in 2020. Scored a TD in state championship game in 2021 and helped win a game this year. The Fake FG was very similar. We lined up in FG. Shifted to the same formation which uncovered the TE lined up at tackle. The LB who was back there to return the kick just happened to come up right as the ball was snapped and lucked into being in the right spot. Otherwise, it would have been a TD. And of course the place to block kicks is off the edge and up the middle. If he would have been trying to block the kick, he wouldn't have lined up a LB, he would have, of course, lined up on the line of scrimmage. When I called him a LB, I meant the position he plays normally, not where he would line up on FG block. Sorry for not being clear. I thought that would be easily understood and implied. Oh, I have been head coach for 25 years. This was the first fake FG I have ever tried. And it wasn't even a fake. It was a shift into an offensive formation. So no fake. Just trying to get someone uncovered.

Coaching with a lack of common sense drives me nuts. As an AD, I had a volleyball coach who would tally up the number of poor serves and make the girls run sprints for each one. The kids were running sprints for 20+ minutes at the beginning of practices following games. They could easily spend 40-50 minutes per week being punished for not being competent at a skill. We had a conversation that went nowhere ("Serving is easy, they need the running to learn to focus.") and it took a formal write-up to get her to actually rep friggin' serving.. Funny thing: we became a better serving team after the write-up. My former AD/basketball coach has his players run for missing free throws.

Parents asking why their kid isn’t playing more.
Kid’s not showing up to practice without communicating.
The kid that asks for a mouthpiece every Monday.
The kid that asks for knee pads every Friday.
Coaches who complain and have no solutions.

Yeah... thanks for caring about class and studying......

Yeah... thanks for caring about class and studying...... We have a state civics exam that’s 100 questions. I spent all last week preparing them for this test. Told them everything about it. Filled out the 100 question study guide provided by the website the test is on. 1st period kid says “ Whoa! There’s 100 questions on this?!” 🤦♂️

I find myself way more agitated with kids than I did even 5 years ago and know it's only going to get worse. I do try to just let stuff like that roll off though. Kids are kids.

I teach 5th graders, and we are discussing the Mayans right now. I know it may not seem interesting for the kids, but I try my best and I have kids from prior years always tell me this was the most interesting stuff they learned even when they are older.
We are discussing the Spanish coming into the Yucatan Peninsula and timelines so I wanted to start with the beginning of European intro to the Americas so I asked "Christopher Columbus first came to the Americas in what year?". Complete blank stares as well as kids asking who Christopher Columbus was, then a girl shouts out "C'mon guys Christopher Columbus was a president, how do you not know that?" and she was completely serious.
Not sure how it relates to pet peeves... but it definitely peeved me.

Sarcasm aside, that is really annoying. I had a girl (10th grader) once ask if Oregon is a real place.

Student: "Why not?"

On the topic of kids saying/doing dumb stuff; I hate to be a downer but teaching genuinely made me very pessimistic about the future. The total inability for kids to do seemingly anything is horrifying.
After teaching 90 freshman in a health class I would guess that maybe 30% of them could competently put sentences into straight lines with a capital letter and a period. Even more concerning is of those 30% almost all of them were girls.
No standards, no accountability, inmates run the asylum behaviorally.
Far and away my biggest pet peeve in teaching was the general mindset from so many of them that holding kids accountable or giving them consequences was "mean" or "unfair". That's not helping those kids at all.

Generally speaking they care more, work harder, and turn in better chit. The dudes in my class inspire very little hope for our future lol. I know they'll be fine though. Just a lot of immaturity. Especially these covid impacted kids.

Couple 'Rona issues with teacher shortages and the future of the profession is "interesting", to say the least. It's turning into an ugly snowball; the kids are already behind when they walk into a classroom staffed by a long term sub or uncertified teacher and things just get uglier and uglier.
