Setting up the camera system! First off...I'm old. This is my first year back in coaching after a 20 year hiatus in the business world. When I last coached, game film was done on a VHS camcorder. I'm at a small high school in a small Midwestern state. This season I was tasked to set up this video system and things. Dear Lord! Should I have asked to attend a training course at NASA on how to set up this thing? Are these game video clips being beamed off some Elon Musk satellite? I'll admit, Hudl is a pretty useful tool, but I say give me a 42" tube TV strapped onto an A/V cart on wheels and a Cowboy Clicker any day!

Coming from a "young" coach that has been tasked with all of that by default just because I'm the youngest - I'm willing to help you out in any way I can through this medium. I'm not a "tech savvy" person by any means - setting up the video stuff is one of my least favorite parts of my job, but I have gotten over it.

When I was last an assistant (I don't coach anymore) about 15 years ago, I was the video exchange guy. I have lots of memories of driving to some woebegone, cornfield-surrounded 4-way at 6am on a Saturday morning to meet my counterpart and switch tapes.

I do the upstairs stuff (easy enough) and another guy does our endzone stuff. We only had 3 home games this year (5 now through playoffs) so dividing it made sense since we're on limited time most weeks. The effing iPads never work. WiFi signal problems, clips not downloading right, etc. It's been constant grief and I hate this role.

I'm actually glad Texas doesn't allow the sideline replay stuff...would be so much more work from me. But it would be nice to have in-game evidence against our QB when he makes ridiculous claims about what the defense did.

I only coached 1 year with that sideline stuff and saw no use for it. The benefits never approached the hassle/cost. I wouldn't bother with it if I were to get back into it.

I’ve only been at one place who used it and it didn’t show a coach anything you couldn’t get from a 5 second conversation with a spotter up top. It also didn’t even work half of the time due to Wi-Fi issues and other glitches. This isn’t the NFL.

I think a lot of people use it because they get caught up in the sales pitch of it at clinics and they're terrified they won't be keeping up with the Joneses if they don't have it. I didn't see any benefit to it myself. And it just meant another freaking thing for me to carry around and I hate carrying things.

I'll add this one: coaches who try too hard to act cool with kids regarding the kids weekend activities, specifically drinking, partying, recreational drug use, and sex. I get it, we are supposed to build relationships with the kids; and we were all kids once too who were out partying and living it up. But it just comes off as overly desperate to gain approval from teenagers when coaches do this. This whole "don't have too many 'sodas'" (wink wink) stuff is annoying, and wreaks of forced attempts at coolness. Might as well turn a chair backwards and straddle while saying "hey kids, lets rap". That way the kids will know you really are cool- maybe they will like you more. I know that happens but I just don't get it. I had friends my own age, I didn't need teenagers. As much as I liked (most of) my players, I wasn't going to be their buddies. Not what I got hired for, and nothing good can come from that. Now after they graduate, sure we could have a relationship. Still do with some former players. one of the best things about being an off campus coach: players dont know what i do, they only know me in the realm of football. keeps all of that buddy buddy {censored} at a distance.

About the kids trying to be "friends" stuff...I probably have one of the weirder situations of people on this board.
Some of you have probably coached/taught with your own kid going to school there. But how many of you have had a younger sibling at the same school? 3 years ago, I came back to my hometown after being elsewhere my first 3 years. I have a sister that's 12 years younger than me. She was a sophomore when I took the job, and now a senior and the drum major for the band. So I have had to tell several kids I have known for ages, friends of hers, that they can't call me "Nick" anymore, at least not during the school day.

A good spotter can give you the vast majority of what you need. There are times as a playcaller that i like to be able to take a look at things but as HC theres too much going on. If I was solely an OC and was up in the box I'd get more use out of it but right now i find myself going several games in a row without even touching it sometimes

I initially was not a fan of HUDL sideline, but have come around to see the value of it. Partly, due to it letting the play caller on the sideline better see what is going on- even the best pair of eyes in the booth will miss some things. But more so, to show the players exactly what is going on, and where there errors may be, in real time.

Teacher/coaches should have a required professional development course every year entitled "THE KIDS ARE NOT YOUR FRIGGIN' FRIEND!!". This is something that I see getting worse as the years pass. Teachers and coaches have some serious chit boundaries when it comes to the kids. Welcome to the wondrous technological age where a teacher/coach is dumb enough to allow kids to have access to their lives 24/7.

kids saying the F / N / B / S / R word and nobody correcting it R word is a massive pet peeve. Otherwise we don't have a ton of the other ones going on. Kids will drop an F bomb every now and then but it hasn't really been out of control.

Don’t wish another dumb meeting on us. You think the dummies that need that meeting are going to get anything out of it? It’d just be another hour of misery for us old grumpy football coaches.

We would call them "BroCoaches" they want to be bro's with the players and the cool guys! Our HC would get all fired up and say some of these dudes are more about performance art on the sidelines than actual coaching! They all fit together with the "wanna be friends with the players" crowd. Nothing wrong with developing relationships with players and all, I have good friends who were former players but they are like in their 30's now not some 18 year old kid I'm trying to impress.

Hudl sideline is absolute garbage Every team we played this year that used Hudl Sideline had the same complaints. We use SportScope and it's significantly cheaper and we had zero technical issues with it this year. I would recommend it to everybody who wants sideline replay and is unhappy with Hudl Sideline.

The only difference is that we record the game through the SportScope app (which allows for sideline replay in the same way that Hudl Sideline would) and we have to manually upload the film to Hudl. It takes slightly longer than Hudl Sideline because it doesn't automatically upload the film, but for the amount of money we save, it's definitely worth it.

Teams that bring heat off both edges against a fg/pat. Ive seen it multiple times with teams that do this where you have two kids running full speed in opposite directions and diving head first, where they crash into each other.... Yall are gonna put a kid in a wheelchair with that nonsense
