Ohio just said as of now it's up to each school to decide if they want to play or not. According to their association "They only run the post season not regular season..." pretty odd statement.

Pretty big time punt there, but I understand it. Since all of these associations are membership bodies (schools being the members, represented by their Principals) I can see where someone in one part of Ohio could say "hey, look its not for me to tell Jefferson high, in another part of Ohio what to do".

Just say it, SEASON CANCELED. No justifiable way to guarantee safety of kids. Even its not true, you owned it. What a yellow move. Whoever heads up that committee should resign.

That's some cowardly {censored} from the Ohio Association. We're on the verge of the same thing here in Iowa; they're going to give us an update on Aug 1, which will undoubtedly be a massive punt and abdication of their responsibility. Glad we're paying the IHSAA head 6 figures for his stellar leadership.

Glad we're paying the IHSAA head 6 figures for his stellar leadership. To play devil’s advocate- is it an abdication or a recognition that different geographical areas face different issues at this time, and a one size fits all approach may be inappropriate. A return to a much more localized, “grass roots” and bare bones environment as opposed to a centralized sports authority may be more appropriate during this time. Essentially , Jefferson high creates a team from the students attending- and tries to schedule contests against other schools that have teams. Thats it. Now I would be very critical if the state association strolled in and tried to influence situations after that proclamation

I appreciate your point of view, and I don't disagree. However, in this particular instance - a massive public health disaster - we really do need a uniform response, not a patchwork. After all, the patchwork is what made things even worse.

I am not trying to pick a fight I just want to know what expectations are. Thanks.

I am. I know it will cause blowback, and they aren't going to make everyone happy. But we can't keep doing this piecemeal approach, it's not working.
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to miss football this year like I'd miss my right hand. But it would be irresponsible not to take every step we can.
If the OHSAA doesn't want to take that stand, then say everybody play. Everybody playing and some people playing is practically the same.

I'm sure you can find some parents who are happy to take the risk on their kids behalf, and so a travel team if you need your fix.

Govts and legislative bodies want to take control of multiple parts of society they should have no business in, but when it's time to make decisions that could be controversial in areas they should be involved in, they punt. They had no issues sending out statewide business shutdowns for communities that may have been unaffected, but now we should trust local authorities? That's where the frustration lies.

How many state HS athletic associations are part of state governments?
I know ours is not and thus had nothing to do with shutting down businesses.
Our governor has SUGGESTED that the MHSAA CONSIDER moving football to spring, but she cannot mandate it.

If the OHSAA doesn't want to take that stand, then say everybody play. Everybody playing and some people playing is practically the same. So if the state government and the OHSAA or in my case the TSSAA say football can be played in 2020 can't a school district opt out of playing if they think it is unsafe? I don't see how a state association can make everyone play. Again I am not trying to be difficult I am genuinely curious as to peoples opinion on the subject.

So, the way I see it, I would prefer the org says "everybody plays, opt out" or "nobody plays, opt in". But "well, you see, OH MY GOD WHATS THAT?!" and running doesn't cut it for me.
Under the current circumstances, there is no clarity about playoffs, conference championships, state championships, etc. I feel that just clearly indicating one way or the other with opt in and opt out gives everybody clear expectations.
I get why people might disagree, and I understand that I'm splitting hairs.

But I am sure the governor could through the Dep of Ed shut down extracurricular activities if they wanted to. I am convinced that is what Ohio is doing, throwing it in the lap of the governor so they an throw can throw their hands up and say "WE DIDN'T DO IT" same thing happened here in PA, Secretary of Ed made a statement saying it was up to the individual school district if they would shut down way back in March. Like 3 hours later governor shut em all down. No one wants to be the persona with the proverbial blood on their hands.

Again our association has nothing to do with state government and that includes Department of Education. It is a private, not-for-profit corporation that does not use government funds or tax dollars. Only way the governor could stop athletics and probably other extracurriculars would be by closing schools as was done in March.

I would have assumed it would be, but just last week a state senator in Louisiana petitioned the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (State school Board) to cancel sports and the President of that board stated unequivocally that the board had zero jurisdiction or authority over high school athletics. That surprised me a bit.

Why isn't saying "Hey, right now in these cities, it probably isn't a great idea for any sports to resume, but in these other areas, these places can probably start with sports like Cross Country, Swimming, etc, and in these places with very low if any cases can crank things up. Because of such widespread differential and needs, we are not going to presume to think that we should be making policy that governs all at this time" taking a stand?

If that is what was going on, GREAT! But it isnt. Its pass the buck everywhere you go. GHSAA cant pass the buck fast enough. Mayor doesnt want it. School board wont touch it. School does want anything to do with it......its a local issue as far as i am concerned, and nobody wants to make that call. And cross country, swimming, baseball, even basketball isnt a decision anybody is wringing their hands about. Nobody gives a &hit about those sports. Most schools in GA wont start those sports because of money. they cannot afford to start those programs without football income.

Again, is that "passing the buck" or is that saying "Hey, we organization and oversee athletic events and championships, you guys are the health experts so we will defer to your judgement as to whether the activities we oversee are safe at this time?" Isn't that the same as a coach deferring to an athletic trainer or doctor with regards to an athlete being cleared/able to play? I haven't seen to many posts here with a HC thumping his chest and saying "The buck stops here, I say he is good to go!"

The entire athletic budget comes from gate receipts. Football gets by with “old money.” In this town, that is saying something.
