You guys complaining about the coach and even the community being only about winning, do you not enjoy it? Does your community not enjoy it? I am not a win at all cost guy, but I love winning. I will do everything that I can within the rules to win. I prefer to do it in a more positive way. I don't swear at kids, I hold them accountable for their bad choices, and try to teach life lessons. Part of life is winning though. If we deny that we are doing a disservice. I don't see anyone complaining about the coach/community wanting to win.

I want to coach them like i would want my son to be coached. I lose my temper here and there as a coach and father but I am reflective enough to come back and say hey let's make this right and move forward. Maybe I am wrong but coach Stephens goal was only to win and win big. Yes by doing that kids could help themselves but if they won then flunked out he in my opinion wouldn't have cared. Literally the guy told them to beat the dorm rules by splitting a room three ways. He never showed up to support the academic advisor. I love to win but winning and success aren't always synonymous.

I liked it and hated it. For me, it was the best chronicle of a football team I've ever seen (All or Nothing, Hard Knocks, ESPNU-thing, etc). I cringed at the entitlement of the athletes and coaches and they should have used more subtitles in the episodes. It did illustrate what many programs are dealing with in terms of academics(not just for your athletes). That college is extremely fortunate to have an academic adviser that naive (?) or engaged. I was conflicted on cringing or laughing out loud at the bible studies one minute and Mot***F**kerCo****erPiec*ofs***Sunova***** swinging at referees.....I've coached with a few guys like that JUCO is a tough bag, particularly in the South where they are used as DI gateways. It didn't help that EMCC had such a wild ride last year. Lot of the games are available on HUDL if you want more The Olineman that got "pushed"....lol.... "Coach, you ain't gotta touch me like that". That a seat, Nancy. The Dlineman that kept getting the call wrong...... Got a link to those HUDL games?

Like I said, I prefer to win but in a more positive way. That includes winning in the classroom and in life in general. The coach seems like a tool bag, but who knows if he ever goes and supports the academic advisor? Maybe he does and they didn't show it. You are right. He is portrayed as only caring about winning, and not the successes of his players beyond the team. Who knows if that is accurate though. I would imagine that players are taught how to beat dorm rules in most programs though. When you have Chris Carter telling people about to be drafted to go out and get a fall guy, i am sure this kind of stuff is prevalent.

Editing can be rough, but when in the series did you see the coach do anything admirable? Maybe he did but I didn't see it. I have been an hc and wasn't perfect but still put the kids first. If you saw any part that you felt Stephens put the kids first please point it out. I've coached troubled and talented kids. I understand it's a challenge and there are no easy answers but I don't think a majority of coaches teach kids to fake it. I think most teach them and push them to do right. I may be wrong. When I got my first head coaching job the guy who was the winningest coach in school history said don't worry about Mon to Thurs just play the best on Friday. I refuse. I won't recruit. I won't play kids that don't act in a way that isn't a positive reflection on their school and family. I am probably a cliche coach but I can live with that. I have read your post and I know you are a coach worthy of respect. I will not endorse coach Stephens or winning based on that series. And I would rather my son lose or not play than be part of that program.

I'm only about halfway through. I am not endorsing him. Like I said, he seems like a tool from what we can see. Is that who he is, or is it editing? Who knows. I'm just saying that winning is a part of life. I have had 0-for seasons. I don't like them. Our players need to learn how to win and lose and overcome adversity to get through life.
The coach in question is all about winning, but there are valuable lessons in that as well.

I have had a number of athletes sign JUCO over the years and EMCC is actually pretty good compared to many of them. When you have a kid that has run out of options and one of these places come calling you send them. It is what it is.

Watched this series last night on YouTube..
Was very good eye opening to on the athlete who has to balance school and what they actually want to do, play ball
Brawl was just crazy..
Not sure how I feel about coach Stephens.. He's obv a winner. He just needs to practice what he preaches..
Profanity isn't anything.. U see that everywhere these days.. These young men don't even blink at swear words in modern society ...
Was a great watch...

Tbf I thought the oc, coach wood was a good foil for Stephens... Was a very positive coach, especially on game day.. Hc would chew em out then he would pick em back up I liked that... I thought I was a fast talker but dang that dude talks fast!

Best part was when Coach Stephens daughter recommended a salad for dinner and his reply, "nah we got steak and chips, we're good."

what I liked the best about the series was how relevant to HS ball it is. You have these gifted athletes (though nowhere near as remarkable as their own ideas of their ability) who are emotionally and academically immature. The coaching staff is all about winning because that is what determines their worth, so they do what they must to win.
Imagine if Coach Stephens started dropping a point system or leadership mentoring or sits out the stud RB for skipping class... These kids are going to take their act somewhere else because they don't have to put up with this because some coach, somewhere would be happy to put up with their mess for 8 months out of the year.

Not to mention half those guys are probably only there for five months any ways. As bad as it sounds you aren't gonna change them much Aug to Dec so might as well just roll with it. That qb even said it with out even blinking. They are using the program as much as the program uses them. Hard to get too invested in so,etching if you're only there 5 months.

I guess that Stephens is kind of the JUCO football equivalent of John Calipari. Like Calipari, Stephens understands and embraces what the primary motivation of these elite athletes is...getting what they think they are entitled to.
I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. There is an agreement between the coaching staff at a place like EMCC and the players...win championships for the school and the school will do everything it can to get kids a scholarship. As long as that happens, there aren't going to be any issues.
However, Stephens was directly responsible for taking that opportunity away from some of those kids, at least in their mind. And even the kids who got scholarships thought they could have gone to a bigger school had EMCC not have been banned from the postseason (The Ollie kid, for example who ended up going to Nichols State).
Now, that might not be true. Those kids might not have gone on to SEC schools regardless of how EMCC did in the playoffs. But the perception of the kids was essentially "I need to suck it up and accept Buddy's foul mouth, bad temper, personal insults, and hypocrisy and win him a championship so I can go to the big time." But, at least in the minds of the kids, Buddy had created the conditions (punching an official, running up huge scores on hapless opponents, encouraging his players to have an obnoxious and arrogant swagger, etc, etc) that made the fight in that last game an inevitability.
I do think that there should be a parallel route to the NFL for some of these kids. Clearly, a lot of them were simply not motivated to get a free education. For these kids, it was the NFL, boom or bust. And again...I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. There should be some kind of NFL "minor league" in which kids who are not motivated academically can still compete at a high level and have a chance to move on to play professionally.
Of course, the NCAA would resist that effort as it would deprive them of the monopoly on talented athletes.

I think if there is one thing we all should learn, its that when you call timeout with 40 seconds left in the half while you're up 48-0, run the quick screen to YOUR OWN SIDELINE. That was the only thing I had an issue with....don't run anything to your opponent's bench when you're creaming them

You would think it would be on points against rather than making a statement by having to call time outs 40/50 points up before halftime because u need to make statements... Do they have running clock etc? To me that is the real problem.. I know me personally as a coach I would be on my 3/4 string guys at 40-0 Must be horrible thinkin we Gotta score 70 cos so and so scored 60 last week..

This is a good point and one that I thought was crazy. You really can't blame the guy for running up the score under those conditions. I think it was dumb running a screen to the other bench and I think it was unnecessary to call a time out before half. They would have hung 80 on them regardless. Im not necessarily against his win at all cost mentality because, as someone pointed out, they may only play there for one season and leave after the first semester. So there is no loyalty on either side of the coin. My problem with Stephens is in the way he treats the players, and his hypocrisy is unbelievable. Basically, everything he told them not to do he went and did. The series was very interesting but it was a sad glimps into what reality is for a lot of JUCO programs.

Well, if you're going to JUCO with the intent of going DI, I'm betting you want to go somewhere we can get as many snaps on film as possible. You can't do that if you're taking your foot off the accelerator once you go up by a touchdown.
If you can score 100, you may as well. Its up to the other team to show up and stop you. Also, given the nature of JUCOs, you will have an entirely new roster every year so its not like you need to concern yourself with bulletin board fodder

Binge watched it yesterday as I annually binge watch something the day before official practice starts. My thoughts The HC: he's a sleaze. I could care less that his life revolves around winning, in fact it's the only trait Ive seen from him that I can respect. Nothing about that man tells me I would enjoy a conversation with him. Couldn't stand listening to him at all during the season. But hey he does win and winning is good. some of the players on there still don't seem to get it and that is mind boggling to me. How could you screw that opportunity up? !!!!!!!!!!!! Just reminds you that even if they are physically capable of being a star athlete and mayber even getting paid to do it, they are still just dumb kids.... The counselor needs to set some boundaries. Any of my players come in my office pulling some of that crap (earphones etc..) while Im trying to help them thats gonna be the last time they are in there for help from me.

Was a great watch... And that sucks. I'm not a saint and let something slip in front of the kids sometimes, but I do my best not too. I knew a coach who was new to an area school coaching for a guy in our state's hall of fame. Notorious rough crowd of kids, bad home life, whole 9 yards. On his first day he dropped an F bomb at a kid. The HC called him over and told him that we don't do that around here. His response was "well they hear it at home and in the hallways all the time". HC told him that didn't matter, because on his watch they would get treated the way they should be treated all the time. I hated how Stephens handled his players in that show. I get that his players had it rough, but by gosh if they aren't human beings who deserve some dignity and respect. I'm all about tough love and hard coaching, but that can be done with MF'ing kids and telling them they shouldn't be recruited. They need someone to believe in them.

U watch the YouTube series and stephens comes across the same as millions of other coaches out there.. If you hadn't watched the Netflix series you would say he was a good coach that wanted to progress the kids Qb 5 who didn't play until the last game where he got the auburn deal actually plays in almost every game u see the highlights and he's playing, and throwing/runnin for tds yet Netflix don't portray that
Editing is always dangerous...
