Good point - this is why we started using the GST last year. Our QBs stumbled apon them at BC football camp. They loved the grip, so we purchased a bunch of them. what kind of ball does your QB like to throw? A few years back we bought about 7 different types of balls for our QB's to throw all summer. (Nike, Reebok, Rawlings st-5, wilson, baden, and a couple different 5 panel balls) With in a few days our QB's were all fighting to get the Rawlings st-5 to throw. It does not matter how much we like the ball, the qb's need to like them.

Our home field has a hill on one end of the field. We were able to simply buy a $300 digital camcorder and film from there. Do you folks with telescoping systems bring them to away games also? Do you ever get a hassle from the home team?

Thanks for sharing this. That was fun to watch... nice looking athlete. We really should post more video clips -- ours is such a visual sport. I wish him good luck.

Poorer schools -- ProScout is FREE... not $900. We checked out TD Video and honestly, it's about half of what ProScout is.

ogie4, On the computer that has ProScout installed, go to C:\Proscout football\Manuals That's where the Microsoft Word, 54 pages User Manual is located. I printed out several copies (1 of each coach using the software). It's not too bad. To add a new field - Launch Index and Retrieval, then under Tools you'll see 'Database Utilities' Under that is 'Add or remove fileds from database' It'll bring up a small utility to add or delete fields. Note- this is not for deleting 'data' within a field, it's to add or delete the actual field/column. Concerning disk space, each game/angle is about 35-40 minutes in legnth, which is about 6-8 GB. We bought one 320GB external drive for the complete season(opponent and our games=about 40 games). Let me know if you have any other questions. Mav

We did everything on a laptop this year. The portabilty and flexabilty was great. Anytime, anywhere I could pull out the laptop and watch/scout our team or our next opponent. We never left a question or concern unanswered. This option was made possible only in the last year mostly due to the type of high end disk needed for video (rotates at 7500rpms). With 60-100GB you can have about 6-10 complete games/angles locally. Each week when done with opponent, I just move the previous weeks video to a 320GB external drive (about $175) and load the coming up opponents video. For Monday films, I would just plug laptop into the tv(or projector) and show the video to the kids. It was nice because you could overlay the down/dist/LOS/Formation/play and coaches comments directly on the video. The video quality and control is the best you could imagine(forward and backwards at any speed). If you have the budget give a laptop a try, you'll wonder how you did without it.(last year the laptop cost about $1400 from Dell)

The hit charts are - 'Master Run' for a general chart for all formations and 'Formation Runs POA Breakdown' for each formation (it has a pull down). Don't rename the fields, just make new ones, then add them to your filter. (works good for data entry and retrieval, but bad for reporting)

I'm curious what bells and whistles you're referring to. To make highlight/cutups all you need is the abilty to tag each clip with your desired data then retrieve it. DSV is limited to 5 'custom' fields -- ProScout is unlimited. For retrival, ProScout uses Microsoft Access, so you can query/retrieve any and all combos of information for highlight/cutups. A pretty cumbersome interface, but as stated before, the end result will be identical. Also, it does have hit charts -- by all different formations and game situations. With ProScout the autocalculations are limited to down, distance and LOS. IMHO - the Webb GameDay was the best product out there. It's a very mature product (because it's been out the longest) of the major players. If yo9u have the money, chck it out. SportsEdit is not CoachComms product. They're just a reseller(VAR) for XOS (who bought it from Pinnicle last year, when Pinnicle was reorgaizing their company and getting rid of non profit making subsidiaries) DSV support is so bad because they don't have a dedicated support staff, they use the Sales guys to also support the product -- Keeps overhead down.

For anyone interested in getting their feet wet with digital film editing at NO COST, check out ProSout video. Thye have a program where the NFL/NFL Players Assoc will donate the software to your school (~$4-5000 value). I know it sounds too good to be true, but I applied for it last year after demoing mostly all of the systems(Webb,DSV,LRS, etc) We received teh grant and used it this past season. It did everything we needed. Not as slick looking as some of the top tier(and expensive) systems but can do ALL the same things. I went with it because I figured if it was a piece of junk - No big deal - it's free. I know DSV is a major sponsor of this site so I hope they don't delete this message. Just trying to help out other coaches with tight budgets. (I heard about it on another discussion board just before purchasing last year) Let mw know if anyone has any questions. Mav

Does anyone else on the board have problems using the "search" tab? I just searched out "d-line" before and it came back with numerous threads. Later when I came back and searched the same thing it said there where no threads!!! I love this site and spend more time on it than any other site, but it is frustrating when you are trying to search for information on here. Other similar sites are much easier to "search". Sorry for the bitching. This seems to happen occasionally on all Proboard's forums. Because of this, when you want to view a thread from the search results page -- always right-click on the link and open a new tab or window. If you simply click on it, then use your back button, it'll lose the 'results' and at times not be able to find them again.

Why do you have to convert it? Just plug it in and use program that comes with DSV or windows moviemaker and it will make it into a avi file and have to cuts automatic If the file is in DVD format (ie MPEG-2) it has to be converted to avi. You can do it a couple of ways - 1) stream the video out through an output port on you camcorder (s-video, firewire, etc) and into a program on your computer (I think this is what you're reffering to) 2) you take the DVD disk and put it into your DVD drive in your computer and convert the DVD files to avi. I don't think DSV or MovieMaker can't read DVD file directly. I think most people who hear about DVD camcorders believe it may be much easier because they can take the game DVD directly to their computer and/or DVD player, thereby skipping a couple of steps. Not really true. btw - there has been plenty of compatability issues with the Sony DVD camcorders. The disk only hold about 18 minutes for the standard high quality video.

Does anybody have this? I mean a digital camcorder that burns directly to the 3 inch DVDs. What are your thoughts on the technology? How much game film can you get on one 3" disc? Can you put that 3" into a regular DVD player? Any problems with format issues? i.e. dash or plus? Is using the mini DVDs easier or harder than using digital 8 or mini DV tapes? As coachjd stated, if you're not expecting to use a video editing program on your game film, this may be the way to go. The mini- DVDs that are used can be played in a typical DVD player. Couple that with a DVD duplicator and you'd have many copies within minutes after finishing your game. The harddrive camcorder has the same benefits as mini-DVD. It uses the exact same format (MPEG-2) as DVD, so you can burn directly to a DVD disk without conversion, plus the added benefits of not dealing with any external media. They typically record to a 20-30 GB harddrive that holds about 7 hours of video. But again, if you're expecting to use an editing application on it, you'd have to convert it to raw avi before the programs can read your video file. The conversion from MPEG-2 to raw avi is fast and easy with $30 software. Harddrive based camcorders are definetely the future IMHO, but because they're fairly new technology, they're still quite expensive. Mini-DV camcorders are still the industry standard. They're cheap and versitile. We bought a middle of the line, consumer grade JVC a couple of years back for about $250 - still working fine.

We've(software engineering co.) purchased dozens of Dell notebooks and desktops over the last several years. We've been very happy with the quality, consistency and price of the machines. IMO the area Dell has started to lapse in is in their support. We originally went with Dell, after many years with HP/Compaq, due to their superior support. But over the last year it's been suspect. I'd still purchase a Dell over any other system out there.
btw - I've run into many computer professionals who swear by IBM laptops - that would be my second choice.

I would like a laptop for all my football files.. scouting and other items. I also would like a dvd recoerder or burner with it. Do any of you use something similar? What do I need and from where? How much? Nothing to fancy. Thanks We use a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a half a GB of memory(RAM),ATI Video card, 100GB of 7200rpm internal disk space and an internal DVD burner. A comparable new Dell will cost about $1,200. As stated you'll need an external drive also. The last piece of hardware you may need is a Canopus analog converter. It's used to convert VHS, Hi8 or other analog video to digital -- if you still recieve this type of media in trade. I've helped out other coaches spec out systems. Let me know if you need any assistance.

This is a terriffic idea. If it's really popular I could imagine someday having 'guest' clinic speakers. I know I'd be willing to pay a small fee to be involved... possibly revolutionize clinics?

#1 - this site- because it triggers ideas for further research with books, videos, etc #2 - Books - like to follow up with videos to confirm what I'm envisioning. FCPGA videos are like a book(very detailed), video(visually represented) and a clinic, rolled into one - great stuff. #3 - Clinics - especially break out sessions where you can get into the detail. This site has made clinics drop in importance -- it's like getting a mini clinic on-demand. #4 - Meeting with the staff - wish this wasn't 4th... Working on setting up meetings with other staffs this off-season.

Can practice with the kids anytime after the last spring sport has played its championship . Can practice all summer long with the kids. Cannot scrimmage another team to the middle of August. During the winter and spring we can strength and condition. Toprow -- what state are you from?

California- We have 15 days of Spring Practice. We do have overlap with sports in the playoffs and in some years not had some starters during Spring. It is short and shirts only. No pads or helmets. We normally practice for 4 weeks with no practice on fridays. We have memorial day in there so it works out to be 4,3,4,4 each week with a spring game at the end. Then we finish up school and and start our summer practices. Summers are Mon thru Thurs. Lifting, field work with 7 on 7 games vs other schools every thursday for 5-6 weeks. Interesting - Cal and Texas have a full season before the real season. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) What % of your players are involved? Must be tougher for the linemen... not being in the 7on7 games.

Here in Texas... 7 on 7 Have Tournments which Qualify you for the State Tournament as well as 7 on 7 leagues...it is possible to play on most weeknights if you wanted to here in the Houston Area. In Texas you're allowed to coach your players in 7on7 leauges, during the off season? Is there restictions on summer practices or do they consider 7on7 teams separate from your HS team.

I was a clinic in Boston this past weekend and whenever a new or complex topic was being discussed, it seemed someone would always comment 'well they have the time to coach the kids. They're allowed to have spring practice.
I'd be interested to know which states have spring football. I heard many southern states allow it. Is it full contact? 7 on 7?

Brophy -- Great find. Like thurman said, it's a great way to standardize players and codecs (unlike Putfile). Wish the quality/size was a little better, but the price is right. Has anyone been able to save a video locally on your computer? Maybe you have to be online and stream it only. The download speeds are excellent.
If anyone needs any free avi programs let me know. I have a couple that can convert formats or create small clips from large avi files.

We consider QB Wedge and Sneak two very different plays --
With QB Wedge the oline squeezes into the lineman inside him using short choppy steps. The QB presses forward immediately, with the backs also pushing the pile.
On Sneak the oline man blocks and the QB steps back and finds a bubble to exploit, with the backs flaring out.

How do you feel about the program? Is it worth it? Easy or difficult to use? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks, Mike We have been using it for 4yrs and our stat man cannot live without it. They have upgraded the software every year and they have improved it with every upgrade. The statman has a "spotter" that walks the sidelines with him to help with numbers and what not. When the game is over we take the palm to my room and we print all the stats in 5 minutes. I am very happy with digital scout.......save many hours versus the old paper charts. For live games, if you have a person(s) dedicated to inputting the data, that's the ultimate. For self scouting after your game, you could merge the data with the video editing system and watch the game with down/dist/los/play, etc immediately. Does anyone ever use a handheld to scout film?
