Does anyone know if it is illegal for a coach to work the Hi-Pod camera behind the end zone and be on a headset at the same time? I wouldn’t think they would be a rule for that but I’m not 100% sure either. Are you sure that you don't want this in the Rules section? I thought about putting it there but it didn’t seem like that section got much traffic.

One idea I’ve heard that I think might work would be a 6-7 game season with playoffs (unclear on the format) in the Spring, then football wouldn’t start again until school starts (end of August/beginning of September here) with another 6-7 game season and playoffs. That would hopefully give kids (and coaches) time to refresh, while also rebalancing the rest of the sports through the school year.

My state just pushed football to Spring, so I’m wondering what other states who have done the same are hearing about the details for the Spring season: start/end dates, # of games, playoff format, etc. This question may be directed at a topic that is too fresh to know much about but I thought I’d throw it out there.

There’s a Tabata timer too that’s a free app and easy to use.

Here's where I'm at. I currently coach JV ball at the school I teach at. I know that down the road (sooner rather than later) my wife and I will start to have kids. With that comes a demand of time away from football. To do my duties as a dad while continuing to coach, I'm considering coaching at either the middle school or youth level. For those that have made this transition before, what are some of the main differences between coaching at the high school level and coaching at the youth or middle school level?

Definitely. In Michigan, Xenith has hosted the Prep Kickoff Classic for the past couple years. 2 games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. All held at Wayne State University. There are some smaller "classics" too. Those aren't as hyped. Not exactly a tournament, just a great slate of games.

I purchased some from Champro. They have worked great for two seasons and show limited signs of wear. We have only used them during games though, so 18 total. I would definitely order again. If you didn't like them Amazon is always great with returns. The best part is the price!

Can anyone share a credible system they have used or have seen others use to grade players based off of game film? I've been searching the internet for an article or anything and I can't find much. Any ideas?

I think it depends on what you want to get out of it. The first team camp I was involved with was the summer before my senior year. We were changing offenses so the camp helped us to lay down the base of the offense: drills, routines, base formations/plays. It really helped us! We did the camp with another program that was led by a college teammate of my head coach. We stayed overnight at a nearby campground. We had 7 on 7's, 11 on 11 run drill with players holding pads (THAT WAS FUN!... things got heated but not too much), and a skills competition at the end of camp (big man 7 on 7, fastest player, strongest player, jug machine). It was a blast! I also went to this camp for my first 2 years of coaching as well. It was the same basic layout but 2 more programs joined in.
The other day camps I have been involved with have been day/evening camps mostly. A lot of work on fundamentals and a little bit of scheme.
Team camps can be useful but also a pain! Organization is key!

2 quick observations: -I LOVED how the Pats went right after the Rams' D-line from the get-go. Whammed Suh on their first offensive snap. -The Pats absolutely drilled any underneath movement that Rams used on their split-zone runs and, more importantly, their play action. I think Goff only completed 1 pass to that split-zone crosser.

I thought the Pats O-line had a shot at the MVP. I know it's not 1 player, but a collective group effort that saw Brady only get sacked once and led the way for 154 team rushing yards. They were my second thought, behind the more predictable selection of Edelman.

Are you much of a podcast guy? If so, there are plenty out there. Also, I'm not sure if these count as blogs. But I like to check in on a couple websites weekly to see what's out there. X and O Labs, Inside the Pylon, Football Study Hall, just to name a few. I've never been much for podcasts, but everyone keeps telling me I should check them out. What are some good ones? That reminds me... I need to subscribe to X and O Labs... I like the Run the Power Podcast, Coach Ron Mckie, and the AFCA has one too I believe. If you have an iPhone just go to the podcast app via the Apple Store. Not sure how it works with Android.

I’m in uncharted waters personally, so I need some insight if possible. I want to ask for film from a school about an hour and half north of the school I’m at, but we play in the same division. We would only see them deep in the playoffs but it’s definitely possible since both the program I’m at and the one in question have been close to seeing each the last two years (in the regional finals).
Do you guys think they’d send me fill to study for fun? They do some things a little bit differently on offense (Pistol, 21 personnel, power/counter) than we do and I’m really just interested in learning more about their type of scheme. Is this a weird or valid request?

Run the Power is my favorite. It is updated at least once a week, if not more, and they have a wide variety of guests/topics. Leans a little more to the offensive side (see the title of the podcast) but they talk about a variety of schemes. I do like that they start and end each show the same but the conversations are much different between each segment. Each episode is about an hour, so it is a perfect listen to/from school or mowing the lawn.

Hi coaches! What do you guys do in the offseason to scratch your football itch? Obviously, there are clinics but how many can you actually go to (consider time, money, weekend availability).
Any ideas would be great!

Has anyone been able to see the new Vicis Zero1 helmet in person? This is the helmet that is "supposed" to be our next answer to the concussion/CTE panic. I know a few NFL players wore them last season and more will wear them this season, as well as some college teams. Is this helmet all what it's cracked up to be? Is it cost effective for high school programs to invest in?

For those of you guys who coach youth or 7/8th grade do you go to clincs like high school staffs? If you do, are they the same type of clinics i.e. Nike, Glazier . . ? Are there clinics exclusively for youth football? Thanks!

poundit52 I think you misunderstand. At least MY (and I am betting Chris Clement 's ) "offseason" comments were in response to the cumbersome (in my opinion) schedule listed by coachbdud . A written double take if you will, as in "thats what you do in the "OFFSEASON" regarding 3 hours of practice 4 days a week in the summer. Also, are you talking about youth (under 7th grade) football ? If so, I can't say what others would do, but my answer would be nothing. If you are talking about a team associated with a school, then I can envision some summer work outs..maybe 2 days a week. i would say our offseason (Summer) is pretty par for the course around here. in the winter/spring it is much less, all we can really do then is weight lifting until spring ball. However in our section (CA is divided into a bunch of sections) for the last 10 years or so, they got tired of trying to police the complaints about teams practicing illegally (all the best schools were already practicing everyday in full gear) so they instituted a period which is now defined as June 1- August 10(the august date can change but it is pretty much the 2nd monday in august. during that period, NCS (our section) has no rules regarding practice regulations now there is the new CA law about hitting but that is brand new. Up until this summer you could (not that you would) go full gear, full contact 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from 6/1-8/10ish this year we haven't been able to do full contact/thud stuff until this past WED (7/22) and that was just our section, most of CA chose not to adopt that policy and won't go live until early august. anyway, as far as summer schedule goes, i am sure there are team who do less than us but i would say most do 4 days a week i am sure there are some that do all 5 days we tried this 2-3 years ago... i hated it, the kids hated it, the other coaches hated it. We were all burnt out by the first game, they are 14-18 year old kids... "back in our day" we didn't practice non stop year round like it is today 3 day weekend gives everyone a little break, including us coaches. Makes nice weekend trips possible for everyone, and i am less frustrated because i am getting about 90% attendance on any given day (of our 4 day week). When we tried fridays too, we would end up with half the kids there, so what is the point i am sure there are many schools who just lift/run over summer maybe do a couple passing tourneys but i would say the majority of teams in our area are doing the lifting/conditioning... and getting some on field practice in Is this regarding youth, middle school, or high school? This sounds a lot like high school to me.

I actually would like answers to both what an offseason looks like for youth (under 7th grade) and Middle School football (7-8th grade) if that's possible. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks!

How much do you guys do in the offseason (clinics, camps, etc) if any? Another way I could ask this question is, how much time do you spend on football in the summer?

I am in my 5th year of coaching at the high school level, and I love it! But down the line I could see myself coaching youth ball once I get married, have kids, and the amount of time I have shrinks. As far as I know the time commitment to coach at the youth level is somewhat smaller than HS I.e. weight room duties, skill camps, 7 on 7's, two a days (please tell me if this is a misconception). But I know that I would like to coach on some level for as long as I could. So what are some of the differences between coaching at the HA level and coaching at the youth level?

Hey guys I kno that our program is in better shape than others, and a lot of programs dont have a JV team, much less a Freshman team. In response to those who have pointed out the obvious, like "Coach'em up" and "Be thankful you have a coaching position/freshman team", I know that coaching football is a privilege and a CHOICE that me and the rest of the coaching staff made. We know we have a job to do. I was looking more for ideas on how keep things light when our kids get discouraged and what to focus on (i.e. fundamentals, effort), and a lot of your responses hit the nail on the head. It just reassured me that we are gonna have to keep pushing these our guys to get better every day and really focus on the little things. We love to simplifiy the game of football as much as we can (KISS rule). Not just from an X's and O's standpoint, but a philosophical point of view as well. We believe that football is as simple as WHAT is your job on this play/scheme. HOW are you supposed to do your job (technique). The coaching staff is reponsible for the WHAT and HOW. But maybe the biggest factor is pure EFFORT, and thats supplied by the players. Thats what we are starting to preach while keeping the atmosphere positive and full of energy. Thanks for the input everybody!

So I need some advice guys, and maybe some encouragement. It's the first week of practice and numbers are pretty low on our freshman team (24-26) for our school's size (over 1500). We knew that we would have number problems. We also heard that this group didn't have a lot of talent, but we didn't really care listen to that because we wanted to keep an open mind. So far we look pretty darn rough, I mean real BAD. We don't have more than 3 decent athletes and maybe only 4-5 FOOTBALL players in total, if you catch my drift. The coaching staff is trying to stay positive, enthusiastic, and keep the energy high during practice, but sometimes that just doesn't seem to cut it. It's like some of the kids are there just to fill time during their day.
I know its still very early in the season but it feels like its gonna be a long one already. Any words of wisdom? Anything else we can try?
