The question says it all. I'm not grinding an axe on either side. Just wondering what people think.

We love team camps as well. Great for team bonding (for players and staff). We also get the opportunity to get our guys a lot of reps. As an O-Line coach, I also love the opportunity to mix and match my O Line against live competition to get a feel of who can play where if needed.

I think it depends on what you want to get out of it. The first team camp I was involved with was the summer before my senior year. We were changing offenses so the camp helped us to lay down the base of the offense: drills, routines, base formations/plays. It really helped us! We did the camp with another program that was led by a college teammate of my head coach. We stayed overnight at a nearby campground. We had 7 on 7's, 11 on 11 run drill with players holding pads (THAT WAS FUN!... things got heated but not too much), and a skills competition at the end of camp (big man 7 on 7, fastest player, strongest player, jug machine). It was a blast! I also went to this camp for my first 2 years of coaching as well. It was the same basic layout but 2 more programs joined in.
The other day camps I have been involved with have been day/evening camps mostly. A lot of work on fundamentals and a little bit of scheme.
Team camps can be useful but also a pain! Organization is key!

Our program has been going to a 3-day team camp for the past 10+ years. From the coaching side, it's a great way to get reps and your base schemes in. It really gives us a head start on the season as it is held at the end of July and we roll into practice shortly after. For the kids, it's a great way to get away from home for a few days and hang out with their teammates. I know this, there would be a mutiny if I told the guys we wouldn't be going this year!

Do you ever feel like there is some player burnout during the season by doing your team camp at the end of July? We do our team camp in June, give them some time away from football and weights at the end of July/early August before we start our season.

The only thing we do in the summer is 7-on-7 a handful of Sundays and a couple days of prep before team camp. There is a week between camp and practice that we give the kids off as well, but honestly, after team camp the boys are chomping at the bit to start practice.

It must be different than us because we run the weight room during the summer on top of 7 on 7 and some OL competitions, so we feel that we all need a break from each other before the long haul begins!

Sorry, we do weights as well. We do it year-round, so didn't even think about it as something "extra" we do in the summer.
