Listen to those guys talk at a clinic and they'll tell you they just have a bunch of regular, hard-nosed kids.

We do not have a standard, and we have exactly the same scenario that you've described.

We had Stellar Prep on our schedule a couple years ago. But it was for week 8 or 9, and they shuttered their season a few weeks before that. Never heard it from them, we heard it from the coach of the first team they cancelled on.

Week 3: Affront to the game Where do I find the film/playbook/clinics for this offense? Also, if anyone ever asks me to name our offense, it was going to be "Rainbow Sparkle" but now might go with "Affront to the Game" (I find some of the offense-naming silly). First off, screw you because you just made me go back and watch it again haha. They're an 11 personnel team as a base. But here's what a sampling of what happened in the first half. 1. They go 3 and out, punt. Maybe their best drive of the half. 2. They jump in some Wishbone thing they've never shown before. Get one first down, unforced fumble to us on the 4th play of the drive. 3. Couple more 3 and outs. 4. Jump in empty with their backup QB, give up immediate pressure and throw a pick. 5. Best play of the night, they get a 30 yard run. Kid gets called for taunting us after the play. They throw a double pass INT on the next play. 6. Unforced fumble on the exchange of an attempted reverse, another turnover. I think I summarized it succinctly in my original post haha.

I think they should ban it. It's basically all the same dangers of a horse collar tackle.

Week 1: SBV, got our butt kicked. Week 2: Mostly under center I Week 3: Affront to the game Week 4: 11/12 personnel gun Week 5: Gun with multiple personnel packages, 10/11/12 personnel. Week 6: Spring Install version of spread Week 7: Primarily 10 personnel spread with some 20 and 11 personnel packages. Week 8: Gun 10 personnel with a 6 OL Wildcat package. Week 9: Mystery. They've been Wing T every game but last week used a generic gun 11 personnel scheme. We shall see.

Playoffs?

I like playoffs, because I think they help demonstrate and reward teams that improve over the course of the season. I've been involved in quite a few seasons where we lost a game early on, only to beat that team in the playoffs.
I do agree the seasons are long though, and they are starting earlier and earlier. We are in our 4th game week, though not as bad as the OP scenarios, because our season ends the week before Thanksgiving. Our state champ will play 12-14 games total. A few years ago that could have been as high as 15.

My biggest problem with this: I assume coach doesn't like these things because he thinks they are a "look at me", attention drawing item. He chooses to post this rule in a "look at me" attention drawing manner.
Have the rule if you want, but a little self-awareness too.

One of my sons started in 5th grade, one started in 6th. 5th I thought was a little early with the benefit of hindsight. Other than one season I've ended up helping to coach every year.

I don't really agree with the difference in styles leading to "better" or "worse" Tackling.
I think good tackles look good with both styles and bad tackles look bad. The difference I see in bad tackles is bad "old" Tackling results in cut backs and bad "new" Tackling results in crappy looking arm tackles.

Our last day of the week we go early in the morning. Sucks getting up that early on Thursday morning but kids are done by about 9:00 Thursday morning and off until Monday afternoon so there's some upside for them.

I'm honestly surprised by how surprised some people are by the number of hours teams are putting into the summer. Not a comment about whether it's good, bad, or indifferent but just the surprise about how common it is.
In my area literally every single team has a summer program going for about 10-12 hours a week, and has for the last 20 years.

We do about 10 hours a week in the summer. It feels like a lot but not totally crazy to me. There used to be a program here that did 20 hours a week in the summer, which just seemed crazy to me.

So it's not because he missed the previous spring practice, but because he is missing the current spring practice, which is prep for next football season?
Either way seems incredibly dumb, but if he's essentially denying a kid who finished the prior season in good standing and helped the team win a championship then this is completely absurd in my opinion.

We go to a couple of tournaments a year. They aren't my favorite thing to do but they also aren't as bad as I feared they would be when we started going last year.
You're going to see some weird crap when you're on defense at those things, but it's been good for us to stress the rules of our coverage and help reinforce them for the kids, especially the underneath coverage. Also not bad for building in some "contingency" type calls, because we're almost definitely going to run into a couple receivers that are way better physically than our DBs at a tourney.
We also try to pick up a few times a summer where we can get together with another team and work more in the "joint practice" type of setting. Those are great, better than the tournament setting.

I've enjoyed the NFL a lot more since I gave up rooting for a team. Much more enjoyable for me to watch the freaks and not care when somebody loses because of a 50 yard penalty/no call.

Numbers should be 6 feet (tall?), so 7 yards from Sideline to bottom of numbers.
Definitely seen some grass fields where the numbers were shorter though l.

I'm a defensive coach, but the best one I've watched from our sideline was one that was good enough to live in Cover 0 all game. Everything was hard against that. They schematically outnumbered us in the run game, and that let them keep their fits really simple and consistent. Their kids knew exactly what they were expected to do every play and beat the living crap out of us in the run game, and it was easy for them to outnumber our protection if they needed to in the passing game.
Full disclosure this is a perennial top team in the nation, so yes they had a ridiculous physical talent level, but were also great at executing what they were doing. From my perspective though it all started by being able to line up every play and know they could hold up in Cover 0.

Once had a guy who had ELITE speed, like almost made the Olympics fast, tell our corners just stay in your backpedal until the receiver passes you, then turn and catch up. He didn't last long as a coach.

Definitely seen an uptick in the haircut one the last few years as longer hair has become the style.
We're pretty lenient on drivers tests just because the kids don't get a ton of control over when they can schedule those around here.

Our HC sends a calendar out to parents in December or January for the coming year. During the spring/summer portion he lists every day we have a practice or function and the time frame. Once school starts the calendar doesn't list every days practice, I guess he thinks it's implied enough that we'll be practicing after school that he didn't think it was needed.
So one year a kid is involved in summer Weights, 2 a days (this was back in those days), etc. and stops showing up in the fall. He shows up after 3 weeks and HC asks "where have you been? You haven't been here for like 3 weeks." Kid says "sorry coach there was nothing on the calendar so I didn't think we had practice." We were 3 games into the season. Live and learn.

I used to coach OL and I always thought we needed more Indy time. Now I coach LBs and what it taught me is that OL coaches are a bunch if bellyachers, they have the most Indy time on the team! We do 7 on 7, the OL gets more Indy. We do special teams, the OL gets more Indy. And don't get me started on the QBs and WRs, lol.
My whole post comes from a place of jealousy in case thats not clear.

For public schools I'd generally agree that a crazy amount of resources and funding aren't an obstacle that can't be overcome. If this is a private school with crazy resources and a desire to be good, they're going to be/get good.

We don't have a Goliath in our league, but we do in our state. Top 10 nationally on a consistent basis. I'll tell you what we've done: lost to them over and over and over again.
In all seriousness though I think you just have to let your kids know that you're expecting to compete and perform as well as you can, regardless of the opponent. Sports are about competition, if the other team is great then your kids have a great opportunity in front of them to compete among the best.

I've coached 2 guys that have played in an NFL game, one is on his second conract and is a full time guy, the other got called up off the practice squad a couple times. Neither had a D1 offer coming out of high school, interestingly enough.

I "run" the scout D, but the OC scripts the whole thing, I'm just responsible for communicating it to the scout kids. I'm positive there are times where I've miscommunicated to the kids and given the wrong look to the offense. That might be a scenario where the OC did his job and would still tell the kids "don't worry we won't run that play if they line up like that, we'll run XYZ..."

Somewhat related: I coached a kid 5 or 6 years ago that got "internet famous" early on in Twitter. Like he had a spot on a national day time talk show to discuss it with the host.
This was a good kid with great grades and good parents, and that level of sudden "fame" and obligations was really hard for the kid to manage.
