I'm more of a "have them play basketball or wrestle or do track or play baseball" to work on their physical development. Assuming your coaches of other sports have the kids lifting and having to improve their size/strength/speed, that part can be done for you.
I use a "QB School" template for the playbook stuff I need them to learn. I've got copies of them. PM me you email address and I'll send to you.

We ordered some of those murder mystery in a box off Amazon and put the kids in groups of 4-5 and they had to solve the murder together while racing the other groups. Kids had more fun than they thought and they had to work together, explain their thoughts and come to a group decision. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. What was that team's record? 4-6... best record at the school in a decade. Not amazing football talent in the area.

Ideal world for me is a 3:2:1 ratio of Indy:Group:Team
When I was at a full-platoon school with a bunch of athletes, we had a full 2-hours each day with our side of the ball: 30 min run-indy 20 min group run 30 min pass-indy 20 min group pass 20 min team 60 minutes of indy, 40 minutes of group, 20 minutes of team
Been at schools where we have to go both each day, so those numbers get cut in half to fit in an hour so we can rotate to the other side of the ball for the other hour.
Any "practice" is setup with that concept. When we do other types of practices (walkthrough, chalk-talk-stalk, etc...) those are with specific purposes in mind, so those are usually full-team, or if you are a full-platoon, they are full side of the ball on one half of the field, the other side of the ball on the other half.

Number One = FIND ADULTS TO HELP YOU
That has been my biggest mistake at the 2 places I took trying to turn it around. Assistant coaches, teachers, parents, etc... I did a better job my 2nd time around getting guys on my staff on-board, but at the end of the day, if you don't want to work yourself to death, you need to find people willing to do a lot of stuff for free to help you out.
I took over at 2 programs that were 3-7 at best for a decade prior to me taking over and was able to get some progress, but never able to get over the hump. I was working too long, too hard, and without enough help to make it happen. I just resigned about a month ago from the second job and with a 10-30 record, I was on-pace to be the 3rd all-time winningest coach in that program within a year, but I just couldn't continue.
Find an assistant who wants to run the weightroom and let them do it all... Find a parent/teacher who wants to be in charge of team dinners and let them do it all...
The programs around here that are always good, have an overwhelming support system from the community. I've had HCs find out some of the stuff I have had to do as the HC at the place I just left and they are all SHOCKED...
The kids will respond if the parents are pushing them to be a part of the program and are supportive of the program.

Hey guys... that time of year again. I have been chosen as the head of our coaches association and am using my clinic as the starting point of building the association from scratch. We have had several speakers from this site in the past including Coach Huey himself twice. I paid a guy to setup an official web page to use for all things UFCA. Below is the website, and if you can make it, feel free to join us. We take the entire clinic out to dinner Friday night and then cater an in-house lunch on Saturday. Speaker list not final, but we have some great ones coming. Some of them are already listed on the website. www.utahfbca.com/

Nothing to do with you larrymoe or 3rdandlong or anyone else... those kids I had were going NFL from the time some women said yes 15 or 16 years before I ever came in the picture. I just got the opportunity to coach them. I'll argue all day that there are coaches going 2-8, 1-9, 3-7 that are way better coaches than some of them going 10-2, 11-1, 9-2. Some guys getting a roster to 2-8 is a better job than the guy who got their roster to 9-2. Look at the NC game last night. There are gonna be people who think GA staff is "better" than the TCU staff... that game looked like it was won (for the most part) 18-24 years ago, not because of anything either coaching staff did. GA was a much better football team and after the scare last week, I'm sure were as focused as they have ever been for a football game. TCU staff did a hell of a job. People are too quick for praise and too quick for dumping on dudes. I coached a LOT more the past 4 years at a school with 0 college football players than I ever did at the school with all the NFL players. I just had to not screw it up at the other place. I had to coach my @ss off to get to 10 wins in 4 years at the new place.

They haven't been drafted yet... just double checked and one is now not on active roster, so 3 currently playing, 1 on practice squad, 2 supposed to go 2nd/3rd round in draft, and possible 6/7 rounder. A long way to go...
They are the reason we won state. Like I said... I was a genius running the ball almost 90% of the time

Accurate ones... NOPE
Coaches are responsible for entering stuff on Maxpreps. Some coaches think that it is possible for a kid to have over 200 tackles in a 10 game season.
Some coaches are too lazy to enter the stats.
We've been scouting teams and coaches don't even have rosters available for us to just get an idea of number of kids on their roster.

"making the kids come to practice/weights is bullying". Who said that??? Parents at the school I was at... Admin didn't agree, but that sums up pretty much everything I had to deal with for 4 years here. You wouldn't even believe the drama I got over, "Ds and Fs are unacceptable, and we will do grade-check 2 times mid-season. Any Ds or Fs and you are not able to play in games until they are all C- or higher". DRAMA... "You are the football coach, you shouldn't punish them for their grades..." "it's unfair that the kids have to keep their grades up, why don't you just worry about it at the end of the quarter" Things like that. One time, I caught kids committing forgery by signing school documents for each other and threatened to not play the game that week because forgery is a serious thing that you shouldn't do... MULTIPLE parent complaints to the office. Not, "Jimmy, your coach is right, you shouldn't forge documents", but instead, "Jimmy, your coach is an {censored} for being mad at you lying/cheating/forging"

"...because there is not consistency between teachers." My dad once told me that one of the biggest issues with raising kids is what other parents do or don't do. The same goes for teaching. When I closed the door to my classroom, I did not expect anyone to put his foot in the way.... I agree... most of the difficulty I run into I'd I've got kids who have never svores higher than a C on any test in most of their classes and still get an A because of extra credit and all the other nonsense that inflates grades. Parents are so used to the kids n9t learning and getting an Athat they lose their minds when they can't get above a B+ in my class if they can't do better than a C on tests. Principal knows of at least 2 kids changing schools because they got an A- or B+ from either myself or the math teacher. I've got 75% of my students with A or B of some kind, but because I don't give them an artificial grade boost by watching some Disney movie, I'm the {censored}. Low-ass expectations from everyone else in their life makes it hard to be the only one with higher standards. Last 4 years I took a program that had won 8 games in a decade and we went 10-30 in 4 years... I resigned because "making the kids come to practice/weights is bullying". That ridiculously high standard compared to all the other adults in their life is just unreasonable. I dont see myself as the "get off my lawn" guy, but it gets more and more frustrating with the overall lack of work ethic I see in a vast majority of people, who then cry about how they were "given" some injustice. Glad to be just a coordinator this upcoming year and just support the HC in having higher standards at a different school.

I'm a big fan of multi-sport athletes. Other than our weightlifting period where they are lifting 4 days a week, I never did anything in the offseason unless kids asked for meetings. Go develop skills in Wrestling, Basketball, Track, Soccer, Tennis, ... Compete and get better as an overall athlete.
It's easier to coach athletes and why not let other adults in the building do part of your job for you?

But coach... you don't have plays you can call to make your 5'8" 150 lb. WR who runs 5.3 win against a 6'3" 200 lb. SS who runs 4.6 and has offers from SEC schools?
I was a hell of a lot smarter when I had 7 NFL players on my roster (4 current, 3 will be drafted this April) and we just ran Iso and Power all day. I was a genius.
Every year I offer to do some scouting, trade film, I'll explain how we do things, etc... ALL FOR FREE if anyone is really interested. I think some guys think "free is free because it isn't as good as the $39.99 bundle". I am more of a "The $39.99 bundle is the same sh!t I'm doing, I'm just buying a set of vocabulary words that mean the same thing for $40".
Hit me up if you want to bounce ideas off each other. I'm always trying to find better/easier ways to do stuff.

I think a common thing I notice in the coaching ranks is that guys who LOVE the sport, and needed to use the brain to overcome their physical limitations (played better than their physical talent would predict) tend to be the ones who seem to do better coaching.
Obviously there are exceptions to that, but I have argued for years that Michael Jordan would NOT make a good coach...
Player - "coach, what should I do if ___________________?" Coach Jordan - "I'd just jump over him and dunk it" Player - "I can't do that" Coach Jordan - "..."

1 year starter at QB. Played some RB and WR and FS as a soph and Jr, but ended up conference MVP senior year at QB. Was 6'1" 185 lbs and really loved football so I went and played at an NAIA school.
Have been doing playbooks and things like that since I was 10. Coaches in college gave me nickname "Coach Miller" my freshman year.
Been doing it ever since

Our OC pooped the bed. 4 Ints and a fumble lost 28-17 Probably the most physical game I have coached in a decade. Some absolute highlight reel hits and a couple of DI commits taking turns pancaking each other. And as physical as it was…it was clean. Nothing after the whistle. Nothing excessive, nothing overtly dirty. There was a targeting/defenseless player call but I wouldn’t call it cheap… bang bang play and helmet came up under our kids face mask. Rest/Prep and get ready for the play offs. I bet the OC coached them up to throw the ball to the wrong team... that's what our parents think when we throw picks!

If I actually do the math, I make about $2 an hour... but there is a LOT of time I don't count because I can't include every 20-minute session I spend doing something for football as it comes up. Just today I had to spend 2-hours tracking a bunch of BS down and driving to pickup items for concession stand and answering emails that I don't count in my "normal day" stuff. So $2.00/hr is a gross OVER-estimate of how much I make.
I could literally make more working Sunday-only shifts at Jamba Juice every Sunday each week. But that is the thing... I'm willing to make jack-$h!t for the actual stuff that needs done... adding all the extra BS is what drives that willingness down to nothing.
Probably a good thing I'm thinking of just hanging it up after this year so I can literally spend an extra 20-hours a week with my family year-round and "sacrifice" the $3000 after-tax I make being the HC.

I'm with tripsclosed on this one... I've been at exactly 1 school in my entire career where the kids actually took them serious and it was worth our time. Not a coincidence we won a state title. Everywhere else it is hours of work by coaches to just pickup 99% of them on the floor in the lockerroom, meeting room, etc... We pulled our "hudl viewing" yesterday at practice and we have 10-12 starters who have watched less than 1 minute of film in the past 7 days...

I know the formula for college and pro is different... basically it is just weighted average designated by someone as a "standard". I use the college one, since I'm trying to get my kids to compare their performance to guys at the level above us...
Is it perfect... no Is it a standard they can use to compare to others... yes
