I don't understand where people find the time to do all of that grading especially if they're a coordinator. When I was at a school with so many athletes that we literally needed to do the grading to justify playing time, it had to get done. That's been once in my career. Most schools I've been at, the QB2 is so far behind QB1 grading would be a waste of time. I have a system for doing it, but is it the top of the priority list... NO. We try to have the kids grade themselves, which gets them watching film for a purpose other than "check this one play out", and more of a "I didn't have good feet this game" type of deal.

Me... probably 12 hours total including gameplanning, practice scripts, and everything.
Staff-wise we have 90 min of data entry and scouting on Saturday and then staff meeting Sunday night to get gameplan to coaches and practice scripted.
Staff votes on whether we are in-person or online. We tried combo once but it was a NIGHTMARE.

Kick the ball out of bounds and make them try go go 60 in one play. Heh...like they're going to let you kick out of bounds on purpose and take that penalty. They can take the 5 and make me rekick, but then I definitely squib away from him or even onside kick at that point. Dont ever let the best player on the field beat you if you can avoid it

Even squib will get lateralled back to the DUDE if their coaches are worth a damn.

FACEMELTER!!!!
My God it's been a while since we've had one of those threads... if we can get DCOhio back on here I'll stroke-out.
The offense I run is the, "try to have the best player on my team touch the ball A LOT" offense. Works when we have good players.
Defensively I'm a fan of the, "get my best player unblocked to the ball and everyone else leverage the ball" defense too.

I'm with you coach... it has been frustrating that they seem to be going the route of looking fancier on front-end at the expense of quality on the back end.
Since so few people run reports, they seem to not care about anything other than flash.

Kids don't know anything... their parents know even less... A lot of guys on here have created some basic football stuff over the years and I am in the process of compiling a "Football School" presentation where we go through as much basic stuff as possible. Here is what it looks like so far: 2024 CHS Football School (Incomplete)I could have sworn I read on here somewhere the the officials don't HAVE to blow the whistle to signal the end of a play, or the end of a play can happen without a whistle, or something to that effect. If I'm remembering correctly is was related to a late hit or some call/penalty that happened without a whistle being blown. or I could be wrong..... There is a "natural stop" thing somewhere. I don't know where off the tip of my head, but winning a game of Fair Catch Free Kick last year was SWEET

Anyone use this? this season? We need a conference wide stats program. Conference-Wide? We can't even get coaches in conference around here to even get a long, let alone use common technology. I've built an Excel Spreadsheet that can keep everything you need pretty easily, and then you can put everything into Maxpreps quickly, which does the season-stats. What capabilities are you needing for your conference?

Unless everyone agrees, the defensive stats are the most ridiculous stats I've seen. There was a team around here that was counting a tackle of a QB on a zone-read behind the LOS as a sack. They would play a team that only had 20 pass plays called in a game and have like 16 sacks.
I always use the official stat rules and only give 1 solo or up to 2 assisted tackles only. If you want to check the math, you should always have:
Total Defensive Snaps - Touchdowns - Penalties = solo + .5*assisted
Nothing makes me laugh harder than a team with only 75 defensive snaps in a game and has like 185 tackles between solos and assisted.

I know the portal and the COVID year have affected recruiting, but At some point the portal thing needs to be evened out right? I mean in order to be a player in the portal who is desired by FBS coaches, you are likely an FBS scholarship player already right? By sheer logical and deductive reasoning, these guys will eventually be out of eligibility and replaced by other portal players. I mean, if this is how it's going to go then high school guys still need to get offered in order to be one of those portal guys later. Right??? Obviously as high school coaches we don't think this is ideal at all, but in order to have a functioning college system, eventually a high # of high school players will still need to be recruited and offered. Lots of HS kids gonna have to walk-on, then get a scholarship after earning playing time and either getting offered at school they walked-on to or put name in the portal and try to get one that way. Bama will still recruit the TOP talent in the country, but they can just snag 2 or 3 kids from the portal if they miss or have injuries that give them a position of need. Think of it like the college football playoff... the top 10% it doesn't affect, but the other 90% are the ones that are screwed.

Kid can play coach... I agree with what the other guys have said about the portal. About half of the high school kids will get offers now as a coach can pickup 10 kids in the portal if they need to. That's 10 less kids they need to offer at the HS level.
There should be a similar number of scholarships offered each year, but if you are a walk-on who gets to play and are not on scholarship at a school. Get your film out, and go into the portal to get a scholarship. There are going to be a lot more walk-ons moving forward.
I'll pass his film along to some of the FCS guys I know and see if they are interested. I also have some NAIA contacts in the midwest as well. 6'3" 230 is usually a frame people will take a chance on.

They don't... turnover is ridiculous, parents are completely delusional, and as soon as you try to show them how to do things to turn it around they fight it. You either give-up and not care or burn out.
I gave up my HC job last year after working my ass off to win 10 games in 4 years with no support and a program that hadn't won 10 games in a 4 year stretch in more than a decade. As soon as the "coaches fault" bull$h!t started, I got out. They are back to 0-7 and the same issues persist.
I am now the DC at my alma-matwr and it's the same boat... I'm the last QB to beat our closest rival and the last QB to win conference (I'm 40 years old). Only 5 winning seasons the last 30 years. We can't get patents to get their kids to school, do homework, not take vacations in the middle of season, and of course the last 5 coaches who have quit or been run out in under 4 years are the blame. I hear rumors when the current coach quits they'll want me to take over, but no way. I'm actually drafting a letter explaining WHY I won't do it because I know it will come up.
Everyone all-in on Colorado so maybe a long list of the truth about the culture of the community and how the only people who put up with their $h!t for more than 2 years are former players who end up in the same disaster. If we win Friday then we are playing for conference title next week and we had 20+ kids miss practice each day this week.
What good coach is gonna stay for more than a year or 2 without dying of stress as a result?

NEW HUDL SUCKS @ss...
If they get rid of old-hudl,a lot of people will just get rid of it. You can share folders in google-drive if you want to and people can create spreadsheets for it. It would be a little more of a pain in the ass for it to not be all in one program, but they are trying to sell to people who don't use HUDL for all it can do anyway... Anyone who knows how to run their 1000 reports are the ones that will be pissed.
I know of about 50% of the schools around here who have at least 1 or both coordinator that don't put any data into it anyway. It is literally just an online video watching software. Saw HUDL presentation at a clinic one time that said average school runs 3 reports per season... since I run over 20 per week, that's a lot of schools doing 0 to bring the average down.

Anyone else besides me trying to figure out how the onside kick makes sense at the end?
1st down beats you in both. You get ball with about 10s left in both.
Deep KO you get punt near midfield with a catchable Hail Mary to win. (9% odds on HM according to stats the past few years).
Onside kick is about 5% chance.
Getting ball at -25ish after the kick you have to not only catch the hail Mary, but then advance it into endzone, so way less than the 9% chance)
Only thing I can see is if coach decides 0% chance to stop them on 3 runs straight...

State championship games here are the week before Thanksgiving. Snow and basketball season make it that early.
In 15 weeks (10 season and 5 post) pretty much only teams with 1st round bye make it that far anyway, and most teams only play 9 regular season with a week off somewhere.
Playing 13 games in 15 weeks isn't horrible, but it's more the inequity of games that's the issue. 90% of games are running clocks at half these days. You get 2 or 3 actual games each Friday. That's what makes it seem forever... hard to get thru week when you have a 70 point win/loss coming Friday night.

We play several that are well-coached... I know their coaches and I know that they do a good job, but 15-18 year old kids sometimes don't do their jobs.
Last week, the FIRST thing I put up on our HUDL for scout-film was tunnel screen. Showed them clips of them running it against their week 1 opponent, pulled up a cutup from 2 years ago of us defending it and literally hitting the WR so hard they didn't run it the rest of the game (2 years ago), and repped it in practice during the week... Friday night opponent went 3-4 for 200 yards and 2 TDs on tunnel! (90 yd. TD, 60 yd. TD, 50 yd. gain, Incomplete. Half of their offensive yards for the game. Looked like we had never talked/discussed it. NOT A HAPPY DAY FOR THE DC.

I believe we have it up and functional for people to pay for access to the digital clinic. There are 47 videos available (had a few technology issues, and fasterthanthefly has a contract with an outside party). $60 for access to all 47 videos. A little something for anybody. If there are any issues, let me know. We just built the site recently and I'm still a little slow with troubleshooting! www.utahfbca.com/www.utahfbca.com/clinic

Still working out the details, but it's gonna be a lot of fun. drive.google.com/file/d/1WyiNZ9X2eSBSR-43CnYEuLEyyM5kDZoq/view?usp=share_linkNext year we'll have to get some more guys from this website out again.

spreadattackFor us, 'indy' is for specific skills. What you are describing is 'group' work. I pretty much NEVER do a full 7on7. It turns into a $h!t-show. We will do 2 offensive players running routes vs. the 3 defensive players an do our group-work with just the 5 of them and the QB. Closer to game-situation, but still not live. Indy periods are more for: QB - stances, starts, footwork, throwing mechanics, handoff mechanics, ball security RB - stances, starts, footwork, ball skills, handoff mechanics, ball security, pass pro, run blocking WR - stances, getoffs, footwork, route running, ball skills, perimeter blocking OL - stances, steps, types of blocks, doubleteams, combos, etc... etc... etc... LOTS to do for these guys Defense - pretty much the same, but for defense. Lots of leverage, lots of tackle-technique, etc... Group periods are more for specific situations you would apply what you just did in indy Team is more game-situation, where you don't know when you are gonna need the skills, but hopefully apply them when they arise. That's how we handle it, but there are a lot of ways to do it. Some guys do nothing but team, some don't do team, and everything in-between.

100% That said, I've found encouraging players to get together to go be hooligans supporting our athletics program has been a solid way to create some of those bonds. AD-"Coach, your boys were at the volleyball game and really caused a ruckus...Some of the parents on the other team were upset" My response... "Good. That's what home-court advantage is. The added noise/pressure of the crowd made the other team uncomfortable. Tell Karen she can watch the stream if she doesn't want to attend the game in-person."
