Finding talent. Nothing else really matters without talent. While there is certainly some truth in this statement, not sure how it helps anyone high school unless you can recruit anyone you want from anywhere.

WEIGHTROOM
Quality assistants. I would rather have three that I can depend on even on the 6A level, than 10-12 flunkies.
Solid, simple offense, defense, special teams.
Best way to win in my opinion: Get kids bigger, faster, stronger. Get kids in shape. Kids knowing what to do and how to do it.

Thirty minutes?!? Holy *bleep*, I haven't been good for 30 minutes since... ever. I need to go home and apologize to my wife. Anyway, I don't expect my wife to be at games but she loves to be there. Early in my coaching career she sat with all the parents then she suddenly started sitting with another coach's wife in the top corner of the stands. Being dense, I asked her why. She said, "Because I can only listen to people talk about what a dumb$h!t you are for so long before I have to start kicking asses." My delicate flower, I love her. Definitely outkicked my coverage.
I had to allot some time for clean up! I was thinking you had to wait 30 minutes for the little blue pill to kick in. Just kidding. Just kidding.

I am really going to miss my wife this next year. She is going to be the cheer coach this next year. In years past she used to film practices, until my oldest daughter was able to, then she switched over to photography where she comes to practices and games and takes tons of photos(up to 2500 a night) She would weigh our players before and after practice and make them drink water before they could leave based on how much weight they lost. She would bring Popsicles for the kids on super hot days, has already brought them popsicles for spring ball this year because we had a 90 degree day. Week end meetings she would bring lunch for my staff. Helped the moms with pregame meals. My shirts for all the coaches wives. I know I am different from a lot of coaches, but I never understood how coaches could say we're a family, and family comes first but you never saw their family around. I have had several young coaches under me the past 10 years, and encouraged them all to have their family around the program, I don't want them to ever worry or be embarrassed if a kid has to come to practice. I tell them the first day, if you have a little one...throw em on your hip and get to work, we still have a job to do. Rare that you would come to one of my practices and my wife and kids not be there in some capacity. Oldest daughter films practices used to film games, but started cheering this year(ugh) youngest daughter helps with water during the summer also going to cheer this year(double ugh) Son is 8 helped a little with water, hoping he can be my ball boy this year. Every coachhuey member should read this.

I bet she got him on the field pretty fast after that. But I bet you slept with one eye open all night. That is if you went home that night. Brave man, brave man. We won, so there was VP. Always way better than LP. Do not know of this LP that you speak of. Lol

My wife’s a doctor and helps us as a trainer on game night. I’ve only really pissed her off once in a close ball game. We were winning a game that we had no business winning. It was late in the 4th and our top running back gets a facemask to his elbow scrapping it open a bit and bleeding a little. My wife started to actually examine him instead of just bandaging him up till I yelled at her to just get him out there and ready to play. I bet she got him on the field pretty fast after that. But I bet you slept with one eye open all night. That is if you went home that night. Brave man, brave man.

I am AD. They don't have a choice. My man. And our coaches want them to lift. When you get a basketball coach who has 19 years of actual college experience (SEC/ACC) and a baseball coach who caught in the minors for 9 years, they get it. They tell the kids all the times to get stronger. Semi’s in football, champs in bball, semi’s in baseball.

I understand that chutes are designed to make you play lower. But isn’t it better to teach an aiming point on each type of block and rep that? muscle memory...bodies remember the angle and get accustomed to it? I understand. But doesn’t hitting the correct aiming point over and over also create muscle memory?

Baseball team made it to the semi-finals and lost to eventual state champs. Won first game, lost second game in 9 innings (hs plays 7), lost third game. The team that beat us went on to sweep championship series 3-0 and 11-1. So we did not start spring training until Monday. 4 days of practice. Last night we played the two teams that beat us last year. Both were 2016 champs and 2017 runner-ups. The second team we played already has five kids with d1 offers and have 3 more that might get them. One of our better players hurt his knee Tuesday. 6'3" 250. Should be back in 4-6 weeks. Anyways, we played both teams one quarter each. Finished up 27-0 in first quarter, and finished up 9-8 in second quarter with a stop on 4th and 1. I highly encourage every coach on here to invest in high handle trap bars and get after it. We have three kids pulling over 600 pounds on them and our team average max right now is 425. Starters average 487. Baseball players got after it all baseball season in the weight room, as did basketball players who won state. Our kids are bigger, stronger, faster. We have always done really well in the weight room, but these things are a difference maker. I really believe that. We can fly. The video at the top of the link is highlights from last night. www.hudl.com/team/v2/14720/Boys-Varsity-FootballHow do you get the baseball and basketball kids in there? We still have kids missing for AAU tournaments and pole vaulters that think they will get to big if they lift weights. Drives me crazy. I am AD. They don't have a choice. That being said, we have a tradition of chmapionships in all sports and d1 players. Plus, the start to jump higher and get faster and stronger, so it is an easy sell.

Y'all look fast and powerful coach. I started incorporating Trap bar dead lifts at my last gig and saw good benefits. I liked how much muscular activation it involved. I was always looking to add "bang for your buck" exercises. Guys think they need to isolate specific muscles (biceps etc.), but the thing is they will do those on their own if they want to. They're not going to jump into the real exercises that get them better if they have a choice usually. Thank you. I think this team is the strongest I have coached. Our starters average bench press (17 players including db's, wr's, qb) is 248 and average trap bar is 487. And here is the crazy part, we graduate 38. Not 38 players from the team, 38 total boys and girls in the senior class. We are a tiny school. I have coached at 6A size schools that aren't near as strong as we are.

Yes. But, after 6 months we had to get the heavy duty ones that weighed 75 pounds and had longer arms because we were doing so much weight. The first ones we bought were 50 pounds and probably only hold 500 something odd pounds. We needed some that would hold six/seven plates per side. I think many schools will run into the same problem after doing them for a while. Get the heavy duty ones. The 50lbs bars are more than likely strong enough for middle school kids. Probably not going to be many 7th or 8th graders who will need to be putting 4 or more 45lbs plates per side. My strongest 8th grader last year pulled 370lbs for 5 reps but most kids weren't within 100lbs of that. The biggest problem we ran into when buying the 50lbs trap bars is that they did not have the low handles, only the high handles (obviously, I was not in charge of doing the purchasing! ). They were significantly cheaper but we have some really short kids...i'm talking dwarves. When they used the trap bar, the ROM was almost nonexistent. So, we had to have those kids stand on a 45lbs bumper plate to generate more ROM. All things being equal, buy the 75lbs bars if you don't have a super tight budget. How can they only have the high handles? Can't you just flip over?

I’ve just started a weight room for our middle school team. Would you go with high or low bars for middle school age kid. Buy trap bars like these. You can do both high bar and low bar. Just flip it over. Yes. But, after 6 months we had to get the heavy duty ones that weighed 75 pounds and had longer arms because we were doing so much weight. I’ve just started a weight room for our middle school team. Would you go with high or low bars for middle school age kid. Our middle school guys go high handle. I have zero problem with someone going low handle. Just saying what we have done. But I would DEFINITELY buy high handle ones because those can be flipped over and used as low handle.

I like the trap bar so much that I have considered doing away with squats. Doing low handle Monday and high handle Wedneday. Haven't done that, but just the fact that I have considered shows how much I really like these.

I question how much benefit short guys (maybe under 5'8" or so?) get for the high handles. There isn't much ROM. They are getting plenty of benefit, but I have no problem with flipping it and doing it regular height (low handle).

We practice fullpads one day a week and in shells three days. Shells is everything but wear shorts and no knee pads. I have done this for years with no problems. Kids don’t miss the knee pads at all unless they have to take a knee and listen to a long speech. Lol. Thankfully I never talk over 2-3 minutes. What day of week is full pads? Tuesday

When we used volleyball knee pads, we just used them for practice and the kids wore shorts, made it a little cooler for the hot days. Friday nights we wore game pants with regular knee pads in, that were only used for games. We lost a lot less football knee pads those years. Another question for those of you that use or have used volleyball knee pads...I coached one year as an assistant with the HC who believed in these. Kids wore girdles under their shorts and VB pads in practice. I took over as head coach the next year and gave them away to volleyball players who needed them and we still practiced in girdles just without the knee pads. I didn't notice any issues other than the kids being happy not having to wear the knee pads, but I'm wondering if they have some sort of benefit. I'm planning on going without them at my new school but I'm wondering if I should reevaluate my decision. Any thoughts as to why they are needed? We practice fullpads one day a week and in shells three days. Shells is everything but wear shorts and no knee pads. I have done this for years with no problems. Kids don’t miss the knee pads at all unless they have to take a knee and listen to a long speech. Lol. Thankfully I never talk over 2-3 minutes.

silkyice why high handle and not low handle? Is it just to get more load? It is easier to get better form and more load.

How (or maybe I mean how often) do you incorporate them into your strength program? Once a week. Two sets. Warmup set and repot set. We generally do 8's, then 5's, then 3's, then maxout. Maxout is a 2 rep warmup, and heavier 1 rep warmup, and then keep maxing until you can't get it. Not trying to be a smart butt, but obviously it is the lift I like more than the equipment. The high handle trap bar just makes it possible. Now, the reasons I like the lift: It combines elements of squat and deadlift. We shrug and calf raise at the top to try and keep it accelerating and hopefully get some triple extension and produce some power like the power phase of a clean. It is very simple to teach and execute. It is very difficult to cheat like you can other lifts like squats. I don't have to watch everyone's every rep. I am not judging depth or form. Check their form obivously, but once they have it, they have it. Don't need spotters. Each rep starts from dead. It works grip, forearms, calves, hams, glutes, lower back, upper back, trap, shoulder, biceps, quads, and core. The kids seem to be able to do it even injured. We have guys with bad wrists. They can do this over squats. We have one with knees that are hurting on squats. We flip over the bar for low handle on squat day for him. No problems. It is a mass builder and man maker. It requires mental toughness. It will be the most weight you lift on any lift. Kids aren't as sore as they are the day after squats. Seems to be a great in-season lift. The baseball players never complained about doing. Our posture seems better. We look more athletic. It is loud and manly. You can't do it without intensity. LOL I really think I am getting the best benefits of squats, deadlifts, and cleans without the problems and technique difficulties that come with those lifts. The kids love it and hate it. The perfect combination. I just see the results is why I love it. Our backs and butts are bigger. We jump great. We are bigger more athletic. Number 1 reason: we can fly. I mean we are really fast!

My wife is assistant AD and PE teacher. She is good as GOLD. Does eligibility, paperwork, buses, refs, ambulance, gets police at games, puts out fires, keeps basketball and baseball gate, sometimes works baseball concession stand, sometimes cleans up overflowing toilet, restocks paper products sometimes, was basketball team mom, ordered our food for spring jamboree last night, helped with physiclals yesterday (I scheduled physicals and spring game on same day - dumbass), also has a son who coaches, son who plays, and daughter who is ball girl. During bball, son and daughter play and older son keeps books, during spring son plays baseball and daughter plays softball.
Oh, and she usually handles cheer problems.
The elementary kids love her. She is a rock star. When she walks the hall, all the little kids call her name and run up to her to steal a hug. All the football players call her Mamma. They love her too. As sweet as she is, she will set anyone in the whole school straight including adults in second.
And she does it all smiling and laughing. I have no idea how I got her or keep her.

Don’t have chutes and don’t want them. O line plays low. We hit bags and have a target to hit.
Honestly, once kids get about 9th grade, they don’t play high on the o line usually.

Guys, use it to your and his advantage.
Show them or explain it to them what d1 players do. How they work in the weight room, watch film, practice hard, be leaders, have to make the grades, stay out of trouble, etc.
I know there might be some ridiculous d1 5 stars that might not work (actually I doubt that), but every single d1 player I have had was one of my hardest workers and cared the most.
Turn the kid into that. Maybe he will be a late bloomer and actually develop into a college football player on some level. Say it doesn't work out. He still became the best he could be, helped your team, and probably become more realistic about his chances. And hopefully became a better person that can be counted on later in life.
Edit: I don't mean be dishonest by the way. Be truthful. I just mean use their desire to make them and the team better.

baseball staff a couple of years ago, somebody had a fake twitter account trashing the baseball team and coaches relentlessly, insider stuff, kind of things only somebody on the team would know so the head coach gets the guys together and says hey guys we're having a secret meeting and I don't want to be recorded, everybody put your phones in this box......soon as they hall all of the phones one of the assistants pulls out his phone and replies to one of the fake accounts tweets lo and behold disgruntled "howcome I'm not the short stop" johnny's phone lights up busted Brilliant! Had a kid do something similar the year we won state, but in a positive fashion. It was "Coach Johnson's Quotes" or something like that. It was hilarious and obvious that a kid on the team was doing it. No one knew who it was. I mean literally no one knew. Anyways, one of the players asked for a little time at the banquet to thank some people. No one thought anything about it. So he gets up there and confesses that it was him. It was awesome. He even had a brother on the team and another brother on the jv. No one had a clue that it was him. Well played. Well played.

worked with a pretty abrasive guy who told his position players "any of you bastards try recording me in a meeting and using it to get me fired, just remember, in a few years you'll be a grown man just like me and i'll catch you around town and beat the ___ out of you" never heard of any recordings so I guess it was effective What did the functional leadership council say about that? Does the coach also get a battle buddy and a brotherhood demerit from the battalion? Hahahahahaha Read more: coachhuey.com/thread/81324/group-punishment?page=3#ixzz5DnX89ogm

We wear ties on game day at school. Did this at even the poorest public school. At least in the south, the kids have some nice church wear. I always had a few ties in my office for someone who truly didn't have one or forgot. They still had a bear crawl if they forgot.
On bus trips, we just have to wear blue on blue. Blue shorts with our blue athletic t-shirt or blue sweats and blue athletic sweat top. Their choice. Would rather comfortable.
