With so many cell phones out there, do kids have the right to record you during a meeting? Every year it seems a coach gets in trouble for something that was recorded. Is it permissible? Can a coach have kids sign something saying that he does not give them permission to record him? Just curious.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding: it is always illegal to record someone or something in a school setting without that person's permission, be it student or teacher. However, oftentimes, the act being recorded is so much more inappropriate than the act of recording it, that that is what gets the attention.

Yeah, recordings are weird based on the number people in the room and stuff like that.
Don't do syrup body shots and you don't have to worry about it being recorded.

1. We don't allow cell phones in meetings or in the locker rooms. There are serious consequences for it for obvious reasons. We don't want kids messing around on their cell phones while we're talking and we certainly don't want them making any shower videos.
2. A kid that violates this rule and records me without my permission is going to have charges pressed against them. I don't care who the kid is; I will personally pursue it to the full extent of the law and school policy.
I had a kid take a Snap chat of me working at my desk from the hallway after school a few years ago. I saw them, hauled their butts down to the office and raised holy hell with the administration and her parents.

I'm not interested in what you're doing with it--it better not be where I can see it.

worked with a pretty abrasive guy who told his position players
"any of you bastards try recording me in a meeting and using it to get me fired, just remember, in a few years you'll be a grown man just like me and i'll catch you around town and beat the ___ out of you"
never heard of any recordings so I guess it was effective

When we're doing white board time or film review a lot of kids have their phones out recording the coach explaining plays, tendencies, etc.

Hahahahahaha Read more: coachhuey.com/thread/81324/group-punishment?page=3#ixzz5DnX89ogmyeah I don't imagine that old coach would have fit into anybody's culture manual on the topic though...I pretty much don't care, I joke around with kids a lot, but never obscenely, the rest of my meetings are made up boring football talk, record all you want. I'm sure I'll get fired for something someday, but I don't think it's going to be for something I said to a kid...i'd be willing to bet a recording helps more than it hurts in many cases i once heard about a guy who was introducing a player to a recruiter from some school that he knew..so he says "coach _____ this is Jim, he might look like kind of a dumbass but he's a good kid and great player" everybody laughs that school doesn't end up offering the kid, the kids parents file a big complaint with the brass that the football coach purposefully interfered with their sons recruiting by insulting him in front of the scout....... that is a true story....it's the he said/she said game that gets you in trouble, something you said taken out of context....i may just start recording myself 24/7 just to keep protected

We've had nothing but issues with cell phones and academics and athletics over the last few years. We kicked a kid off of the basketball team this year for snapping a picture of another kid naked and it went viral. Many kids are just absolute idiots with their cell-phones these days so the simplest solution for us is to ban them as much as possible. In the beginning of track season, the throwers and I were watching some slow motion video clips of last year's shot putters and discus throwers in my room. Apparently, all of the cell phones hadn't been collected at the start of practice because I looked up and one of our kids (a potential all-state discus thrower) had his head phones in and was texting while we were breaking down the film. I booted him out of practice for the day..

baseball staff a couple of years ago, somebody had a fake twitter account trashing the baseball team and coaches relentlessly, insider stuff, kind of things only somebody on the team would know
so the head coach gets the guys together and says hey guys we're having a secret meeting and I don't want to be recorded, everybody put your phones in this box......soon as they hall all of the phones one of the assistants pulls out his phone and replies to one of the fake accounts tweets
lo and behold disgruntled "howcome I'm not the short stop" johnny's phone lights up

Had a kid do something similar the year we won state, but in a positive fashion. It was "Coach Johnson's Quotes" or something like that. It was hilarious and obvious that a kid on the team was doing it. No one knew who it was. I mean literally no one knew. Anyways, one of the players asked for a little time at the banquet to thank some people. No one thought anything about it. So he gets up there and confesses that it was him. It was awesome. He even had a brother on the team and another brother on the jv. No one had a clue that it was him. Well played. Well played.

My head coach tells us every year we have to mind our P's and Q's around the kids. All it takes is one with a cell phone to ruin the program.

Had the starting quarterback have to sit out a half for poor social media choices. In the playoffs one of our kids cheap shotted a kid (dealt with appropriately) and started receiving death threats from the opposing team... If we could I would force them all to deactivate between August and November.

If we could I would force them all to deactivate between August and November. We had a scandal around here involving multiple sports in one school. One of the basketball players had some nude pics of his ex-girlfriend on his phone and spread them around to everyone and their dog. The coach caught wind of it and started an investigation behind the kids' backs. One kid ratted the rest of them out and he started getting death threats from the rest of the kids over it. We're extremely strict with cell-phones. One of our volleyball players forgot to turn her phone into the coach before a game and it was in the locker room. The kid honestly forgot about it and the cell phone never left her bag. The coach was going to let it slide but I stepped in as AD, followed policy and suspended the kid for a game. The coach was p-ssed as hell over but I told her that a) I was going to follow policy, regardless and b) she bore part of the blame for not making sure all of the cell phones were turned in. I've just had too many bad situations pop up because of kids being stupid with their phones.

Wow, maybe im in the minority here, but we have an opposite response to cell phones. Other than putting them up during meetings, we dont deal with phones.
We had our big hitting drill yesterday, 3 1-on-1 blocks and a RB thru an alley, and we have a big alumni bbq at the same time, so theres a nice crowd of mostly seniors hanging around to watch. I filmed the live parts and posted it to our team Facebook page. As is not unusual, our T and DE got into a fight. Players pull em apart, coaches step in when a helmet gets knocked off, we transfer the energy into the next rep. Of course, all of the seniors are Snapchatting the whole thing. In fact, kids in my class are talking about it this second as I type. While the HC might end up with a phone call, that would be the most fallout we could get.
Our practice field is on a busy intersection in the middle of a densely-packed urban area, just a few miles from a major downtown. There are ALWAYS people leaning on the 5' cyclone fence watching our practices. We dont condone fighting, profanity, or other bad behavior, but it happens every day. We deal with it as needed, but we move on with practice. I have ripped into a kid before, only to look over and see his parent watching. All that does is help remind me of how I should be coaching all the time. Yelling loud profanity is great, but that isn't going to get much of a result. After several years, there is very little in my coaching style that changes when parents are around other than a overly-concious effort to eliminate cussing.
I really dont want to sound all high-and-mighty, but I'm always under the assumption that I'm being filmed. My class is working on a review sheet right now, I'm eating a burrito and furiously typing. To be honest, I think NOT reacting to phones makes me slightly less likely to end up online. I mean, I've looked at our school's snapchat story, and I'm on there a fair amount. Whatever, it's the world we live in now.

It's not just at school.
Had one of my coaches get SnapChatted at a local pizza parlor with his family. One of the girls that worked there took a shot of him with a slice in his hand a beer in front of him. She posted it, he never knew until a football player that was in her group let him know. Kid was laughing about it, the coach eating and having a beer.
The counselor in the next door office doesn't do anything in the local area, no dining out, no wine tasting, no luncheons, nothing. Doesn't even grocery shop in the area. Doesn't want anyone to be able to say anything about her being out and buying/drinking wine or anything.

I used to be real cautious about being seen in public with a beer. If I went to a bar after practice with the staff, it would have to be out of town and I would always change my shirt. Then I realized that there isn’t anything illegal about it and said efff it. If someone decides to tear me apart in the court of public opinion, then oh well. I’m not going out and about getting hammered and chasing skirts.

I was at one school, never went out to a bar there, drove to the next town or farther if I was going to the bar. Then I was at another school where going out for a beer after a game was expected. Every place is different and you just have to use common sense, even more now with phones everywhere.

"In 12 states—California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington—all parties involved need to consent before one of them can record the conversation. There are some exceptions to the two-party consent rules."
Also keep in mind you are dealing with a minor and in your local state their could be some sort of common law precedent that has to do with minors; since they are below the age of majority (18) and can not give consent.
It also has to do with being a public/private school and if you are acting as a government employee (teacher).
As a private school coach I am able to tell them to shut their #$%^ing phone off

I’m not going out and about getting hammered and chasing skirts. We went out to the bar after our first day of a 3 day full contact team camp. Being new to a program that wen 3-27 prior to us taking over, we were excited when our players showed physicality and played well against the best team at the camp. We were ordering pitchers and a couple shots, when we realized out 3rd string NT's mom was taking pictures of us the whole time. Nothing came from it (as there is nothing wrong with what we did), but after that night we were sure to be cautious of something like that happening again.
