Here in Milwaukee we see alot of what you describe, inner-city athletes being "drawn" to the suburbs with big promises.

Up here in SE Wisconsin, we have recently 1 HS get busted for alleged recuriting violations and some other things. In these parts this is big news. My question to you guys is how big is this thing across the country? Share your worst horror stories about corrupt football programs in high school.

Up in Wisconsin we do not have spring ball. Our state association gives us 4 "contact" days that must be used after the last day of school but before July 31. The contact days usually are used by most coaches for drills, etc. I have not heard of anybody being allowed full pads.
Now my question. A debate has come up as to whether or not we here in Wisconsin are "missing out" becasue we DON'T have a true spring ball. The WIAA argues that this would affect spring sports. What do you guys think based on your own state rules? Does your spring ball affect other sports?
How long is your spring ball period?
Could you see your program develop just as well without it?
Thanks in advance.

Coaches, I thought I would ask you guys for advice. I teach and coach in Milwaukee. We have the largest school district in the state with over 100,000 students. We have 14 high schools-yet we have only 4 stadiums to play in. The school I coach at has the field space for a stadium. In fact we had a new track put in about 2-3 years ago by the district. However we have no score board, no seating, no p.a. system etc. Because of this no varsity games can be held here. I have advocated for a new stadium and my principal supports it, as does the district athletic administrator. However there are no funds available. Any plans I have must be met by funds I raise. To get the project off the ground I realisticly need at least 50K-100K would be ideal. Obviously car washes, lift-a-thons, and other fundraisers couldn't do a number like this. As for a booster club, well, I started one this year-the school did not have one and it is in its very early stages. Here's the question: Do you guys know of any grants available that I could apply for? Does the NFL do anything? If so, who could I contact? Has anybody attempted this before? I would appreciate any and all advice. I am organing a nice cover letter right now to hit up local buisnesses and industry - but I don't know how successful that will be. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. email: coachwallack@gmail.com team website: www.hamiltonfootball.net

Milwaukee got 10 inches of snow dumped on us beginning at about 4am. This caused our district to cancel school for the day-first time in 9 years. Up here our district almost never closes-my reward? shoveling the crap off my driveway and throwing snowballs at the dog.

Its like a routine, everytime that I go on the net to check my email, I automatically then go to "x's and o's". Usually, I find myself on for at least an hour each time and although I don't post much I sure do appreciate the info. By the way, my wife likes this site, as it gets me out of her hair.

At our school we use them. A little bit cheaper than other jerseys but the qaulity is pretty good.

Wildcat, that is amazing, I second the motion to see a box score and just look at it. Wow!
Well, I should include my "losing side story" Two seasons ago, home coming for us, we get down 14-0 in the first 1:28 due to a kick return to start the game, followed by a quick 3 and out by us with a shanked punt. They hit a 40 yard TD pass on the first play. That was the story line for the game, hlaftime we were down 56-0, end up losing 63 -8 as our starters managed a late TD vs. their JV. I guess it should help that this team we played finished as a state quarter finalist, but then again it doesn't matter-we got our butts kicked.

that you as a coach or as a player have been part of (either on the winning or losing side)?
In 2001, the school I coached at beat a conference opponent 68-0 - setting a school record for single game points scored.

House, I am a huge fan of Hatebreed-was before I became a HC. I played this stuff in the weightroom one day and was getting absolutely amped up. My kids looked at me as if I was nuts or some type of santanic worshiper. I tried to impress upon them the importance of Hatebreed. Needless to say it is a work in progress.

These are all good comments. This year we are beginning with a very minimal amount of play installation-maybe 4-5 runa and pass game plays and then add as they are ready. Being able to convey to the kids is my number 1 objective, and I will build off our late season successes. What strategies do you guys use to motivate your players both individually and as a team?

With the end of the school year, the beginning of a new season is fast approaching. Unfortunately, we don't have spring ball up here-so other than weight room stuff and things that I do on my own, I don't have a ton of contact (in terms of football prep) with my kids. I am now about to enter my 2nd year as a HC and when I look back at the past year I can admit that my staff and I did some great things-this includes an overall better structure for the kids, great fundraising, and some success on the field. The one downfall however I admit was that I went into last year assuming my kids already knew alot about football. I was very wrong. It showed during our first 4 games of the season. As a result we started out 0-4. When we went back to the basics and "dumbed down" some things, we managed to win 5 of our last 6. I was wondering if there is anybody else out there who also just experienced their first season, if they would be willing to share the ups and downs of the season. I guess this also applies to you old vets out there who have been doing it alot longer than I. Just interested in some thoughts and maybe some ideas on how to improve (in general) with the things that I am doing.

House,
Much love to you and yours, and for now I am glad that things are looking up. I hate to say it, but sometime I take for granted that my father is still around. Stories like these help me remember.

I think midline can be effective from whatever fromation/scheme you run: wing -t , bone, gun, etc. When considering midline the first thing you have to look at I would think is the defense you will be facing.
I don't have his email, but "google" River Falls University in Wisconsin. HC John O'Grady loves the midline and is very coach friendly. He'll help you anyway that he can.

Congrats to you! I too, was named HC after 7 years as an assistant. The program I inherit had only 2 wins last year. The school itself is the thrid or fourth largest school in our state. Needless to say, I am very excited about the opportunity.

Offense- gun option, some wing -t, flex-bone option
Defense- don't feel I am up to par to teach an entire scheme, that being said, I have most experience in a 5-2
Positions:
O- have coached RBS the past 8 seasons, this year was my first "true" year as an OC and as a HC
D- LBs
I am looking for guidance in everything related to this great game. I want to get into IZ and OZ next year and limit my run game to about 4 schemes. Tog, whenever you are ready fire some IZ and OZ stuff at me:)
