Just a quick poll as seasons wrap up and we face a growing educator shortage.
How many seasons do you think you have left in you, AND are you an educator or non educator.

I thought I might get out at some point but I took a year off 5 years ago and I was miserable. In my current state of mind I just can’t see ever getting completely out. My son’s 13 and loves it so after he’s out maybe things could change.

Just finished year 22 as a coach and educator, I am hopeful I'm right around the half way point of my career! I love it as much today as I did 22 years ago.... I do plan to change states to be able to collect my pension from Michigan and I look forward to going back into the gym (teaching) and out of administration when that transition occurs..

Educator/coach. I have 16 more years before I can retire with full benefits. I may become an administrator though. I hate administrators and I hate myself for even thinking it but the reality is I’m tired of moving around and in todays climate coaching is a job where you can’t retire somewhere.

8 years left. Coach and educator. I will be 51 when I can retire. So always a chance I keep going just coaching. Or cross the state line and teach and coach for a while.

I turned 42 last month and have coached 19 of the 20 years I've been in education. Due to some part-time/subbing jobs (couldn't find anything else for a few years there) I won't retire until I'm 62. But, on the coaching side, it would shock me if I'm coaching for more than five more years. Our head coach has not resigned but I know he was thinking about it during the season and he told me he was going to recommend that I be the guy who replaces him. Thinking about all that would entail led me to the realization I'm closer to being done than I am being a HC.

I took this year off (61) and really enjoyed my time...went away on thanksgiving (I coach in MA) got to see army at Army went to see my alma mater play (I was a captain) which I never did before..took the bride away another weekend. got in much better shape. I most likely will not coach next year. That being said I think after I retire I might go back to it again. I goal/dream is to someday coach in Europe

Might be something to do when my 7-3 isn’t booked up, or Nov- Spring. But given I have to work now, no real desire to pick up a whistle. Being on the elementary side of education- I make WAY to much $$ helping with the before/after care

This season was y 25th coaching. I knew I wasn't going back when the season started and our HC (who I have been friends with since I was 4) decided he was done about half way through. Not saying I won't be back in HS ball at some point, my son will be in 7th next year and is playing so that's where I will be, but it won't be as a coordinator. I'll take just being a position coach and letting some young buck do all the grinding. Being at a small school kind of expedited the process this year, just so many things that wear you out. Kids are young and on lots of teams so that plays a part too.
Teaching 23 years. Looking to jump to admin since I feel stagnant in my teaching job. Have a great pension here could top out at 55, but we'll see if I make it that long. If I can take my benefits and still be okay pension wise...c-ya!!! I'll go sub a couple days a week as they have just raised pay to 200 a day here.

Until:
1. My wife won't tolerate it anymore 2. I retire. I still have 25 years. 3. I leave the classroom. Not sure if I want to become admin or not, but I don't think I have 25 more classroom years in me. 4. My heart just isn't in it. As of now I am excited for next season about a week after the season ends.

Either your MS ball is unlike most others in the country, or you haven’t had much experience with MS ball lol. In all seriousness though, in that situation be prepared to bite your tongue- a lot

If I were single or had no son I would keep coaching most likely, but this last season was most likely the bittersweet end of the line. The wife has dealt with the long days and nights for almost a decade now and with a toddler at home and being an administrator it’s getting to be a lot. Possibly doable if we were both working in suburb schools, but both in urban education.
This las season was just not fun at all due to personality conflicts on my most recent staff; especially due to how members of our staff treated players to the point where I thought either a player or coach would hit the other and there were multiple near fights in public between coaches. This and just overall lack of organization and arguing that we didn’t need to practice til 7 every night (especially when practice was supposed to start at 3:30) made it miserable and untenable to return. Been runner up for a couple of HC jobs, but keep coming up short to Alumni coaches in my area.
With current school hours and going back to school to get a ESL and SPED license for think the time has come. While I am sad, about the only thing I have “left to prove” is to become a Head Coach and/ or win a State title, so I have had a good run.

The time commitment has exploded at all levels, if you’re coaching Division 1 or 2 in Ohio HS football don’t be surprised if you’re asked to put in near NCAA Division III hours in several programs.

I had just gone from being a head coach (and I wasn't very good at it) to being a position assistant on a staff with guys I liked being around. We weren't perfect but we won a good amount of games and made the playoffs. I think in a perfect world getting on a staff as a position coach with dudes that like being around each other is the way to go.

From the kids I can, but getting them to understand now adays? No, not when they have been virtual for a year and a half and just will not listen. Sick of it. Ignorance from the admin and fans is also just something I am not going to put up with anymore. I don't have to. I don't want to. I won't.

Like, if I am going to Europe, I am going to Europe. Not to be on someversion of a football field I have been on forever. Time to see and do new things.
I will always be into the intellectual side of it, so I can get that here. On the field? full time? Nope.

29 years blowing the whistle 27 in the classroom turn 53 tomorrow can retire after next year got 2 in college and a 6th grader
I don't know if I can go 10 more to get him out of college, might make him an offer to see if he'll join the military.... I thought hard about getting out all together over the past couple of years: I finally gave up the ghost of being a HC, had a staff turnover, momma died, Covid, etc...
But I've enjoyed the new HC and the culture he is trying to create. Plus he does things to provide some in season relief on the ACs: -no Thursday practice, walk through before school with the coordinators -he does Thursday studyhall so we get a couple of hours to run errands, go see kids, get a haircut, take a nap, etc.... before the sub-varisty games. -he rotates nights off for ACs on Thursday sub varsity games- very nice when you don't have to make that 45 minute road trip on Thursday night -limits meeting times
I was feeling pretty good about keeping on keeping, until I got the whuhuflu and had to quarantine for 2 weeks. Man it was nice be able to work in the yard during the fall, best my grass has looked since I bought my house. My wife is pushing hard for her to leave the classroom; 28 years of K5 has taken it's toll. So I guess I'll keep plugging away.
I figure I can do 6 more to get little man out of HS. If we would stop doing all this 7-7 stuff it would be a lot easier on me. I could also step back a little since the HC has me doing some administrative type duties, though I doubt I'd get a full supplement just for that.
Playing it year by year.

30 years old. 10 years experience - 8 as a Teacher - 2 as a college kid volunteer.
In Louisiana, my generation of teachers has to make it to age 60 to get full benefits (with your best 5 year average pay).
I have 30 years left in Education. I want administrator money in retirement, so I will make the jump one day. My parish pays pretty good, my teaching gig is easy, and I am a coordinator. The next goal is to be a head coach.
I guess to answer the question: I won't die on a football field. Admin gets paid well. If the HC thing doesn't happen by the time I'm 40, It may not be meant to be. Show me the money (and the time off).

I have about fifteen more years until retirement. I imagine I'll coach until I retire but my days of H.S. coaching may be done. I am thinking about making a full-time move to the middle school level. I love the game and working with the kids but I'm a bit tired of the H.S. grind.

If coaching is no longer fun for whatever reason(s), you find yourself doing it just for the money, or you'd rather be someplace else (getting out of parking lot like Jeff Gordon as soon as practice is over), it's time to go.

I still enjoy coaching and working with the kids, but I'm getting tired of many aspects of H.S ball. Typically, my batteries are recharged by this time of year and I'm looking forward to the off-season activities. But, right at this moment, I just don't have the enthusiasm. There's other variables at play, outside of burn-out, so we'll see what happens.

In the middle of my 22nd year as a teacher and 21st as a coach (14 as an HC)I have begun to think about this. My youngest son is a freshman for me and realistically I could be done when he graduates. My wife is in the medical profession and has great benefits. I don't think I want to fully "retire" - as somebody else said, get the pension and get into something else.

I cant continue to do it this way for much longer, but if i find at least a doable alternative, I will do this as long as I breath. I cannot bring myself to even consider blue collar work again at any level. If i am going to retire, it will be because I am close to death.
