I cant continue to do it this way for much longer, but if i find at least a doable alternative, I will do this as long as I breath. I cannot bring myself to even consider blue collar work again at any level. If i am going to retire, it will be because I am close to death. I can tell you from personal experience (41 mostly successful and enjoyable years) there is life after coaching. It cracks me up this time of year seeing all the social media posts from coaches who aren't returning next year. These giant soliloquies they post questioning what they will do now etc... acting like some huge tragic event just happened. Just cracks me up, you'll be fine next fall heck you might even enjoy not being on the sidelines. Like you said there is life after football.

I was legitimately worried I would go through major withdrawals as I had been involved with football every fall from 1990-2018. "Coach" was how I identified my role in the world. I thought it was my "calling". I thought I was good at it and had had success at virtually every stop. It took until this fall for me to even miss being on the sideline for Friday night. And to a degree that was more wanting to help correct the {censored} coaching my son was receiving. I still have no desire to ever step on the practice field, or go to a 7on7 or a random weight session in March.

Don't know if I will be on a HS sideline again anytime soon but will help with my sons 7/8th grade team for a few years while he plays. Looking forward to having time after school in the fall and not getting home till after 7 after picking kids up from their practices.

14th year of teaching here, stepped down from coaching 2 years ago. I'm currently 38. My wife is in the medical field, we have 2 daughters. I had life-long aspirations to be a legendary head coach....until I realized my older daughter was sitting in her kindergarten classroom for 12 hours a day while I coached other peoples' kids. Wasn't a hard decision to step down, and it wasn't even really a "choice," just the next step in life.
I don't think I'll ever get back into it, at least while the kids are in the house.

This was year 22 for me coaching and I'm 46.
As long as I can continue to be a coordinator I'll stick around.
If I had to be a Head Coach I probably would've retired years ago. If not years ago, all this covid stuff would have done it for me. Cheers to all you HC's out there still going strong, after seeing what my HC's have had to deal with on a daily basis....I couldn't even image.

Every Christmas break, as I am going to sleep before the first day of school of the next year, I start thinking about what other jobs I could have. Jobs where I can sneak off to see 3 or 4 of my alma mater's road games a year. Jobs where I can play golf from September to December, instead of just May-August when it is 105 degrees here. Jobs where I can go to Spring Training like I have always wanted to do since I was in short pants (2nd sport is baseball, Spring Break isn't real). Jobs where I could finally sneak off to Vegas for a weekend cashing tickets on college and NFL games, or for the first weekend of March Madness....
Then the first day of full pads roll around and, like in Godfather III...."just when I thought I was out....THEY PULL ME BACK IN!!!!"

In a couple of months I'll be 71. Started coaching in '75. I've been an assistant coach all those years for 6 HC's at 3 different schools. Retired from teaching in '13. I'll coach a while longer but when the current HC goes, I'm gone, too. Right now, his decision is 60/40 not to come back. And I can't blame him.

I am done coaching for now. I just finished my 22nd season coaching. So maybe I will be back someday. The 2021 season was hell on me and we went 12-1 winning the state championship my son's senior year. I can't think of a better way to retire. I am looking forward finding out about this life outside of football thing people talk about.

Much kudos to you, my friend. I see so many people neglect their kids, and it makes me so sad. My parents took care of me, but I hate to see other folks do it...

I'm 54. Been teaching 30 years. Coaching longer. Guess I'll go when I'm tired of it or die. I've thought about double dipping or going overseas. My youngest is in 6th grade so I guess I still got some time.

Have taught 14 years, coached football for 17 years, 9 of them as an HC and 2 of them as a DC. I still can't believe I stepped down. I thought I would coach until retirement. I just could not do it another minute. I was tired of the kids, tired of the coaches, and tired of dealing with parents and admin. I had the most fun coaching as a DC,as a head coach I just got tired of it all and stepped down at 37 years old. I had the best summer of sleeping in for the first time in I don't know how long. As July rolled around I started to miss it and thought I really need to get back in it. But the last few weeks have gone by and I am adjusting to going home after school which is awesome. This is my first fall with no football since 1992. Anybody on here really miss it that first year and then the desire left again?

It's my 4th season out and can't say I miss it a lot. My son's a freshman and his going through things has increased my missing it from 0% to a bit. But, I go to his practices to pick him up and see and hear his team mates and realize it's probably best I stay out.

When you are a HS coach (unless in a state such as TX where your coaching-teaching jobs are connected, or if you are trying to make coaching football your career):
It's one leg of your personal table.
First is family. Second is teaching (because that pays the bills).
Third is coaching. Fourth is whatever hobbies-interests you have outside of Football.
Got to keep that table in balance.

The biggest issue currently- IMHO- is the second and third legs are getting so time/work intensive they're eliminating the first and fourth legs altogether.

Make mine a three legged stool. There are no interests that I can focus on like I focus on football. I like things, but I am addicted to football. What probably has me set up to go the distance is my work (non-educator) has always been fairly high stress, and football is the release. Plus, after having my son, I’ve come to enjoy the relationships over the X’s and O’s

I have a long history with football. I’m 43 years old. My father was a high school football coach. I played nine years from elementary to high school. I was a walk-on at Alabama for four years. I coached for twenty years through the 2021 season. I felt burned out after a few tough seasons and likely more on the horizon. I got out of it this year and went to strictly teaching. I don’t miss it at all. When I heard that my former school lost the opener Friday night 53-6 I damn sure didn’t miss it.

I'm 36, entering my 18th year of coaching high school football. I got at least another 25-28 left in a classroom, and I would like to keep coaching after that. However, like the saying goes, if you want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans! We will see what the future holds, right now I am just grateful I have been blessed with one more year in more ways than one.

It's this time of year....first couple weeks of school and season that always make me question how much longer I'll go. I'm 22 yrs in and would think I'd get better or more used to balancing the start of the school year and football, but every year it gets harder. Getting tired of starting the year feeling like I don't have time to take a leak.

One of the big things to me is it’s just not worth the money unless maybe (and I do mean maybe) you’re the HC. Coaching is something you have to love. And if you fall out of love with it, I strongly suggest something else. Coaching full time is difficult. It’s very difficult if you’re not passionate about it.
