Not exactly sure. My goal is to win a state championship as a coach. It was something I never accomplished during my playing days and I think about it often. I enjoy being with the kids and love seeing them develop and experience success as we rebuild our program. I don’t see myself ever leaving the school I’m at and we are a few years away from realistically competing for state… I’m going to be here a while. My first year as a coach, fresh out of college, we lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs. We lost two games all year: week 10 to the eventual state champ, and then that round 2 game. We all thought we had a chance to go all the way. After we lose, I'm sitting there with an older coach while the kids mope into the dressing room. He turns to me and goes "people always say 'there's always next year'...well, I have been doing this for 20 years and it has never been 'next year." In our classification, there are 119 schools. 64 make the playoffs (too many). Be blessed to be one of the 64. Because a lot of the remainder never even make the dance. State titles are a dream, rather than a goal. JMHO. I understand and agree with what you are saying. We have been successful the last couple of years making the playoffs, but we aren’t a realistic threat to win state. We have lost in the first round each year. We are getting closer. Just not there yet. I know that I could go and get on another staff and probably have a better chance of winning state, but I want to experience winning with this program. The journey will be worth it in the end.

Ended my career after 50 years. Lots of ups and downs, but never any regrets. Won championships, lost championships, but always won more hearts than lost. Coached on the west coast, east coast, midwest, and in Texas. Coached every position on the field. Coached college, high school, and club football. Tons of great memories. Now making up a lot of missed time with the Mrs. and playing golf a LOT more.

I'm hanging up the whistle in this district but I'll still be coaching track. I have one move left in my career and it needs to be my "retirement" move. So, I will be looking at schools with at least middle tier football programs where I can close out my career as a position coach.

Back again… getting the itch for football. We had our first coaches meeting last week. It was nice to see the other coaches after losing in the semis this past season. I’m excited, See how it goes.

Great topic to see go back up the charts! I just wrapped my admin certification last summer so that’s the only thing that takes me out for an extended period of time I think. In Virginia, I probably have 27 more years in education before I can retire and get the VRS plop; so we got a while. (Yeesh I’m on year 11 and just realized I got 27 more to go likely)

Good post! My answer may be the rest of this week... I did decide to come back for this fall, the 2023 season. But, I'm definitely year-to-year now. I did tell my current HC that while I can give him a commitment for one more year, he'll definitely want to be thinking about who his DC and OL coach will be in the near future.

I un-retired to coach our MS team bc the guy quit a week before the season. I re-retired afterwards. 0% interest in going back to coach football. Private S&C has been going well.

You still teaching with the private S&C gig? Also, if you're out of the game how long before you become someone who sits in the stands on Friday yelling "Block Somebody!!!" at the top of your lungs?

Yeah I work at the gym part-time like a coaching stipend essentially. 4-6 MWF and some Sat AMs. I’m 1 for 1 on not yelling TAK-L or block somebodeee* no c’mon O-Line, catch the ball or Get’im either.

In March of 2020 Gov. DeWine announced that Ohio was suspending schools for three weeks. It was a Thursday and I had the feeling that the next day (Friday the 13th) would be my last day of teaching, I was going to retire at the end of the year anyway and it seemed obvious that the pandemic would end the school year, which it did. I had decided to resign from the college staff I was on because the school had just hired a new HC and I simply didn't want to start over again with what would have been my fourth HC. So I went from constant commitment to total leisure. The wife and I stayed pretty cloistered until vaccination since the 'Rona was hitting our area pretty hard. I never really thought a lot about what retirement would be like but I knew that retirement during a pandemic wasn't it. I still was having a good time with my new schedule.
Fast forward to January 2022 when one of my former players who was now the HC at the local high school contacted me about joining his staff. My wife thought that I should do it if interested since I had disposable time so I went back after being out for two years. I'm glad I did, although after 40 years under my belt I'm certain that I would not have accepted the offer if I was still teaching. What was amazing to me was how soft I had gotten. I train frequently but was no longer getting 10,000+ steps a day like when I was teaching and coaching, long story short I had blisters after the first day of two sessions. I hadn't had blisters since college and I'm now 66 years old.
There's things that I don't care for where HS football is concerned. The demand on kids time is at the top of the list. Disjointed summer practice opportunities, team camps, 7-on-7's and the like disrupts the ryhthm of the season imo, but I can take it since I'm a position coach and not a coordinator or HC. What appeals to me is the amount of time I can spend honing my craft now due to having the time. How much longer I decide to keep at it depends on how long I still have the juice to coach at the energy level I'm accustomed to. When I stepped away I didn't look back, most guys don't get a chance to do it for as long as I had and I knew that I was one of the lucky ones. In fact, being a fan was fun for a while because I could go to whatever game I wanted and watch other people's mistakes.

My deal is, if I leave coaching, there is nothing interesting about me.
Lay coach here, but you should see people’s eyes light up when they find out I coach high school football.
I get in business meetings, and when the small talk turns to that they are in awe……can’t tell you how many times folks will call me from these meetings and the first thing Yuly hey want to know is how ball is going….
Take that away, I’m another fat, white dude.
No, I cannot see ever letting go…..as a father, I understand guys who do…….but I think I may at least coach long snappers until I die

Leaving/Retirement is doubly difficult when your profession is your hobby!
