Last week an official told us we could not throw to our TE who was wearing an eligible number in our unbalanced formation. He was uncovered, and actually the only person on that side of the formation.
In another game, the clock operator was doing a bad job and the officials said they had no control over the time of the game.

Two of my assistants were given a sideline penalty walking off the field for a timeout. We already had a sideline warning. The official that threw it throws a sideline warning on each team every game. He’s 78, and should not be officiating.
When I asked about it he said they were in the restricted area. To which I replied “you think? They were walking off the field from a timeout”? The ready for play whistle hadn’t even been blown. The rest of the officials apologized after the game for him but we still had a 5 yard penalty none the less.

This week we had a sideline warning on the first play where everyone, except the ball boy was a full yard behind the line. The HC asked wth is going on and he said, "I always set the tone early. This is MY sideline." You can imagine how the rest of the game went.

To make up a call then I’m going ask some questions.

As I'm not coaching now I'm doing end zone video for another team, I know the HC well and I'm helping out. At the game Friday night the sideline ref tossed 3 flags for being in the white box. The HC got ejected over this in mid-4th quarter.
The 1st flag, after the sideline warning early in the 1st, the ref was at the 10 and looked back to see the coaches in the box. Tossed the flag. Last one was in the 4th when there was another penalty being discussed by the white hat and another ref. Apparently the coaches didn't clear the box quickly enough after the penalty was explained.
HC and AD appealed to the officials organization and the HC will be reinstated tomorrow. The ref has been suspended for the remainder (3 weeks and playoffs) of the season.

Our WR gets lit up clearly late after a incomplete pass. No call. ”I yell to the back judge, where is the flag that was clearly late.” He looks at me, grabs his flag and calls sideline warning. This is what the game has become. They won’t communicate, but dammit, if they don’t police that sideline.

They called targeting on one of our guys a few weeks ago. They didn't even know who they called it on, so couldn't give us a number.

Been a rough year for officials, that's for sure. Do other states have an issue with finding officials? Missouri is really struggling.

We've been lucky, for the most part. Did have one give me a sideline warning this weekend after I had to ask him twice for a jersey number on a holding call. He was the one that threw the holding flag and I wasn't rude about it either time; I figured he didn't hear me the first time. Turns out he didn't get the jersey number..
As much as chitty officiating bothers me, these guys take some crap that they shouldn't have to. Our sideline knows to keep their mouths shut and be polite but we've heard opposing coaches screaming at officials from across the field. During three games this year, the opposing sideline has gotten flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct A lot of these guys ref basketball as well; those poor SOBs...

rsmith627Our sideline is good about leaving them be but it took me blowing up at them during our second game this year to make it so. The kids and staff weren't outright rude during the game but I told them to shut their traps, that they weren't helping matters and that I was the only one who would address the officials. Yes, a few of the calls were bullchit but talking to the officials calmly will solve a lot of problems; b-tching at them won't.

Wow, what a d-bag. Refs are mostly good dudes just trying to do a gig. This is why I leave refs alone for the most part.

I realize these guys are under a lot of stress and I try my best to always be polite with them and even sometimes joke around about stuff just to help them feel comfortable on our sideline. I can understand a missed call, even a bad miss from time to time. One game early this season though we had a defensive end get held bad by the offensive tackle. We are all screaming "hold" hoping it would help but get no call. This was about a minute before halftime. When the horn sounds to end the half we are headed in and the white hat approaches me and says, "Coach there was a hold on that play but it was away from the play so I didn't call it because it didn't effect the play." I was not happy. Asked him if that meant I can tell my players you are allowed to commit penalties away from the play as long as it isn't impacting the play it won't be called. He didn't like that response and stormed off.

Our staff has our moments, but we usually conduct ourselves well. I got a flag a week ago, downfield holding on a guy who never made contact. I calmly got the jersey number, then watched the play on Hudl. It's 30 seconds later, the next play was about to start, im 15 yards behind the LOS, finally see the replay, exclaim "wow, thats atrocious." Linesman turns from the LOS and lobs his flag over the entire coaching staff to land near me.
The only other flag I've earned in my 16-year coaching career... QB hands the ball off on trap, then just stood there with no play fake. Dante Fowler (Rams DE) came from his DE spot and suplexed our little QB, causing the white hat to actually step back out of the play. "Sir, thats uncalled for... you gonna throw a flag?!" He said "I am now!' and threw it at me.
One explanation really sticks out from a few years ago, tho... a long pass play, QB scrambling around, we get a holding call. The OL who was flagged had had 3 or 4 distinct blocks during the play. I ask the white hat which part of the play was flagged. He turns to me, "coach, it's the same thing he was doing against Jefferson!!" "Dude, Jefferson was 5 weeks ago!!" He never gave me an explanation of the hold, just kept talking about the Jefferson game.

Had a referee in a JV game call illegal downfield block 3 times on bubble passes saying our outside receiver was blocking while the ball was in the air...on a bubble completed 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage...
Also got a "message" flag on the first play of a varsity game a few Fridays ago for sideline warning...I stepped half a foot onto the field to walk around someone to get to my signaling spot like 2 seconds into the play clock.

"snapping the ball with two hands"
We were punting.
On the other hand, I had a great crew last week who realized we had some back-back-back-ups int he game who couldn't even align right and they let it slide, especially since those kids weren't going to get the ball much less block anybody.

I just had an official tell us that you only need 5 guys on the LOS this year. Its a new rule for 2019 This statement is technically true, but omits that you cannot have more than 4 in the backfield. To be legal with only five on the line you'd have to be playing with 9 or less players.

I'm sorry that you weren't happy, but he was just telling you the truth in the hopes of building some rapport while at the same time telling you "don't worry... I saw that and will get that when it impacts the play". Officials are coached to call safety fouls anywhere on the field, but limit advantage/advantage fouls (such as holding) to the point of attack when they have an impact on the play. The ability to do that is what first starts to separate good officials from the bad. How'd you feel the last time an official took one of your TDs off the board on a sweep to the left side for a hold by a WR on the right, 40 yards from the play?

I am totally okay with that but maybe it is something that needs to be made a very public thing. To be honest this is the first I have been told that officials are trained to limit advantage fouls to the POA. Maybe I live under a rock or just haven't paid attention. Maybe I am just so use to getting those crews that have the guys that call penalties 40 yards from the play. I get what you are saying about this officials POV. Maybe the lines of communication between coaches and officials is already so strained that all of us are on the defensive from the get go instead of looking to work together for the benefit of the student-athletes. Thanks for your POV on this and hopefully it helps someone else reading it take a different approach.

That's the problem a lot of time is all the dumbass coaches the refs have to deal with.

Because I'm not objective, of course I'd be angry. Objectively though, on a 20 yard run that corner has no chance to make the play so of course it shouldn't be called. On a 60 yarder he might be able to stop a TD so call it.

Only 5 total even with 11 on the field.
