Last night the opposing team threw a pass and our cornerback picked it on our own 24 yard line. During his return (which he took to the house) a goofball lineman blocked a kid in the back, right in front of an official who threw a flag. They proceeded to hand the ball back to the offense and tacked on 10 yards. When the HC protested - "the block in the back happened after my guy picked it" - the white hat said, "It doesn't matter." When the HC further protested the white hat bounced the HC. The entire crew was bad and they were fighting with each other all night. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

I have actually been impressed with the officiating we have gotten this year. There has little mistakes as that is part of the game but we haven’t had any really bad calls that stand out.
They did let us return a kick out of the end zone once for a big gain and we were a little shocked but other than that no just flat out wrong calls.

Got a pre-snap flag for "staring at another player to intimidate him" on Friday.
I honestly have no idea why this year has been a total zoo with officials.

A few weeks back, white hat called the entire other team by their first names the entire night.
Even said "Dang, Billy. You didn't need to hit him that hard, but good stop."
Also ejected our stat guy for (politely, actually) asking what a penalty was for so he card mark off the yardage and player number.

Nothing specific comes to mind in terms of a mind-blowing bad call. But I will say between JV and varsity there has been a mass influx of “I’m not doing my job if I’m not calling every little possible thing” type refereeing. Ticky-tack things both ways, even against very well coached offensive lines and defensive backs. Very frustrating series after series.

Every game our first screen is called for illegal man downfield, we explain the play, it's never called again.... yet they won't listen before the game ("oh yeah, we know about screens coach") or pick up the flag ("he was definitely downfield" NO CHIT SLAPPY!)

I've got three from this season.
We're returning a punt and commit a block in the back and a hold, and I couldn't argue with either one of the flags, however, the crew really messed up the enforcement. Guy on our sideline told our HC that the fouls were on both teams, and that they would offset. The guy on the opposing team's sideline tells their HC that they are both on us. He declines the hold and accepts the block in the back because it should work out to better field position for them. This whole process took 5 minutes! But when they assessed the penalty yardage, they walked it off the wrong way! We actually gained 15 yards in the exchange.
Same game. Trailing 21-13 under two minutes. QB spikes the ball on 2nd Down. Crew in such a hurry to respot the ball that they forget to tell the box guy on the sideline to change the down. We ended up with a 5th down play that ended up getting intercepted. Opposing head coach feeling like he's getting homered, tosses the ball hand grenade style halfway across the field towards our sideline. Refs flag him and run him. He tells the ref to go ahead and run him because he can't wait for the appeal. White hat realizes his mistake and decides better of the ejection.
Two weeks later, different crew. Down 21-14 our QB gets ROCKED trying to run the 2 minute drill. Serious concussion, so obviously not a fake injury. We are out of timeouts. White hat apparently forgot that it was a high school game and called for a 10 second run off which took the game clock to :03. He then signaled the clock to start without blowing the ball ready for play, ending the game without another snap. I'll grant him blowing it ready with the new clock rules, but there is NO allowance for a 10 second run off.
Favorite conversation with an official this year: Opposing team runs a play before the official blows it ready for play (ironic). White hat blows the play dead and reminds the QB that he has warned him not to snap the ball before it's ready for play. Me to wing official: "Isn't that a delay of game?" Wing: "Yes" Me: "Are you going to throw it?" Wing: "It's the white hat's call." Me: "Can you ask him to throw it?" Wing: "He knows the rule."
No flag thrown.

Haven't had any bad officiating stories until last night. Game tied at 14-14, 4th quarter not much time left - opposing team ran a play and we appear to tackle the ball carrier, ref on their sideline blew the play dead. No discussion among the referees and we proceed to the next play. We stopped them on 2nd and 3rd down, get to 4th down and the head official calls a time out and comes over to us and begins to apologize for not communicating with us AND the official on our sideline that there was an inadvertent whistle on the first play of the series, so instead of it being 4th down it is 3rd down. The extra first down they received from the inadvertent whistle eventually led to them getting into field goal range and kicking the field goal to win the game.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't upset about the call, but I am more upset about the lack of communication between our coaching staff and the officials. It may or may not have not affected the outcome of the game, but who knows.

I've had teams gain yardage on incomplete passes and penalties several times this year. Blew my mind several times. Last week we changed quarters after an incomplete pass on first and 10.....when they set up shop to start the next quarter it was 2nd and 7.....had another one where play had to be redone after off-setting penalties on 1st and 10.....well when we went to start again it was 1st and 7.....I argued the whole time and my sideline official told me it was supposed to be 1st and 7 without explaining it to me, and then when I FINALLY was allowed to speak to the white hat a couple plays later the white hat said it had been first and ten and my sideline official agreed with him....contradicting what he had told me 10 mins before. Same white cap before the game told me "I hope you weren't the coach two years ago when these two teams played (I was) because sportsmanship was horrible". Well that game was infamous for the ref flagging our kid for getting run out of bounds an additional 15 yards while being tackled and on to the track where he got hurt....

Had an official tell me that Wr's could set picks against my DB's As an offensive guy, I have never had that crew. What also irritates me is that they won't call illegal man downfield on an RPO but I'll get it on my middle screen. They're right when they call it on that, but I wish they were consistent.

Tonight’s was the worst I’ve ever been a part of. Beyond pathetic and unfair to our kids.
5 yard penalty on 4th and 8 resulting in a 1st down.
A horrible PI call on the goaline. Literally the only one of the game. Refused to call them. Wait until the game is on the line and after we make a big play. Would have been 4th and 7. Ended up 3rd and 2.
Their returner literally batted a ball that we recovered. Said he never touched it. Clear ricochet and change of direction on top of it clearly hitting him.
Maybe we still don’t win but dang it was bad.

Had a game stopped this year for probably close to 15 minutes to get the rule book out on how to enforce pass interference. Basically the other teams wr caught a ball and we committed PI. Nothing crazy about the play. Our kid was a little early, their kid made a good play. They tried to give the other team 15 yards from the spot of the catch. Which I do know can be added on if it is intentional but this was not.

Week 4: Down 6, last play of the half...we go with our freeze cadence and DE steps across then steps back...no flag...they show blitz with the DBs playing 20+ yards off the ball...we throw HB screen...wide open our TB drops the ball...flag on the play...defensive holding..Good we get an untimed down...White hat calls for ref huddle (never a good sign for us)...comes back and tells our HC..(and me because I am about to send our QB in with the play) "Here is the deal, there is no flag on the play because the hold was on a WR away from the screen and on top of that the ball was thrown behind the L.O.S., he didnt know that rule though so we are just going to call it a half"...blows whistle, waves hands, and yells "Thats the half" and runs off the field...

Opposing team is ready to take a knee to run the clock out. They are in the pistol. The white hat stops the QBs cadence and tells him he must go under center to take a knee. They argue back and forth about it and the play clock runs out and they give them a delay of game. They go under center the next play and run the clock out.
Didn't really have an effect on the game but my lord.
This was a state semi-final game.

Another State semi final major gaff in Louisiana. DB pushes WR in the back and out of as the ball is sailing over their head. Fairly obvious call from my perspective. Crowd starts booing at the lack of thrown flag and in response the official (either side judge or field judge I guess, I am not rock solid on officiating mechanics) responds by giving the NFL "uncatchable pass" signal, waving his hand over his head. Thank goodness he did, because the Referee saw this, called him over for a conference, and after about a minute the white hat throws the flag and signals pass interference. I absolutely am ok with officials missing judgement calls, but being assigned to a state semi final game and not knowing a rule like that really highlights the official shortage.

I think it's easier to accept poor judgement calls as long as they understand the difference between NFHS, NCAA and NFL rules but it's a whole other pill to have to swallow when they don't. Have seen numerous illegal grounding fouls not called this year due to the passer being "outside the tackles and the ball was thrown past the LOS." More than frustrating.

That isn't a judgement call. That is an official not knowing the rule. And I believe that highlights the impact of the shortage of officials. I will say, that having a thread just to rip officials is probably indicative of the environment that is causing this shortage.

There still is judgement in the intentional grounding foul if there is a WR in the area but not so much pass interference as if there is any contact (incidental or not) while the ball is in the air no matter where the ball is it is PI. And I think there is nothing wrong with being critical of officials that do not now the basic rules or game management procedures. It has to be uniform otherwise each game you would be playing by a different set of rules unbeknownst to either team until you started playing. Makes it difficult to play or coach in that setting.

I used to work with a couple guys who officiated HS football back in the 80's-90's, they had some great stories, of mistakes their crews made;
Placing the down-marker 5-yard marker (no idea what you really call it, the clip that goes on the chain) on the wrong side of the yard line and realizing it after the white hat has already signaled for a first down one way, having to re-measure it, and then signal the other direction in a situation that decided the game.
A last second Hail Mary catch in the end zone that was ruled OB, due to the receiver only having one foot inbounds.
One official signaling TD while the other signals a fumble recovery going the other direction.
Official signals TD, ball comes out, defense recovers and returns it to the opposite end zone, same official who signaled TD, chased the defense 100 yards to the other end zone and signaled TD again (twice on one play), they decided to re-play the down.
The list could go on and on, but the point is that these guys aren't trying to make mistakes, and we would like them to be perfect, but it just isn't going to happen. It really sucks at the time, but as time passes, use those situations to teach that life isn't always fair and sometimes you just gotta eat a crap burger.

Mistakes happen, and they're frustrating but tolerable. Having officials be unqualified, either due to incompetence, age, or physical condition...that's unacceptable. We have a "shortage" in Iowa bc we have a bunch of 80 year olds using his sports reffing as a retirement program, and young refs don't wanna wait 40 years to get seniority so they can receive a gas stipend to drive an hour for a game.
But, hey, I'm sure our iahss commissioners are earning those 6 figure paychecks, just not sure how.

Wouldn't it be easier for the officials, players, coaches, fans, and everyone else involved to have a unified set of rules on all levels? I'm not a rules expert, so I don't know what all of the exact differences are, but it just seems logical to me to have everyone on the same page.

Does any of your state associations host some wort of official workshop? There is a strong need to keep officials up to date on new rules and how what they see on Sunday is not what they call on Friday.

The worse I saw this year was when we fumbled and one of the officials blew his whistle, so my players stopped, as did the other team for half a second, except for the kid that scooped up the ball and return it for a TD. I let be known, as did our crowd that a whistle had blown. All of the refs denied it. On film, you can clearly hear the whistle being blown. I would've been more upset, but it didn't decide the outcome of the game as the other team was clearly better! What upset me the most was the official who did blow his whistle lied about it.
