This has been the craziest season that I've had in a long time. We're 1-3 but that's not what bothers me. The injury bug has hit and we've had some guys quit.
Our starting LT moved out of town the day before the season (Didn't bother to tell us). Our returning RT is out with a concussion and his doctor (A pedia-freakin-trician) doesn't want him to come back at all. Our LG is out with a knee and probably won't return. Our RG, a cut 310 pounder, is subject to full body cramps. He had them at halftime this week and the EMT thought it was an anxiety attack.
Two kids who were in the mix at CB quit after Game 2. One said that he quit because he's not a bench player. Thing is, he would have been a starter but he'd missed a day of practice every week.
Our QB, who had started some games as an injury replacement last year, moved in the offseason and plays for a rival. Scratching our a$$es looking for a QB we moved our projected TE to QB. On paper, he looks great. Throws a nice ball, smartest and nicest kid on the team, lifts with our strongest group but he's not a QB. Problem: He's not a QB. Can't cut loose and throw it. Has to see the receiver completely open. If our OL was as good as we'd expected that might be OK. If we could ground and pound that'd work, too. But the OL problems don't let that happen.
Oh, yeah: Our best DL broke his elbow in a scrimmage, our stud DE is out with a concussion, and our best overall player's mother is a psycho (He's OK but she definitely isn't), and we play so many sophomores that our football intelligence is nonexistent.
Other than that, things are great.

Sorry to hear that, compadre.
I coach 8th grade QBs for one of my former assistants once a week (go to the games when they're home).
Friday nights I pick a game and go. Or not. Still undefeated this year and haven't had one injury or parent complaint.
Saturdays and Sundays I mow the lawn, sit on my deck, spend time with my bride, watch whatever CFB and NFL games I want. No breaking down films, meetings, game planning, drawing cards.
Retirement is a good thing.

I love that excuse! I saw it on Facebook or Twitter or my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who said that Bobby moved away last week.

... when it rains it pours, sometimes you just have the injury bug hit
I wouldn't worry about the CB who quit. A kid who has the balls to say that to you probably is the type that mike leach would describe as "too good to win" (we all have them, they don't try in practice and come game day when they screw up they hang their head and get confused, or they just blame the coaches/teammates)
Maybe cut down on hitting in practice.
One positive about down years in highschool is the bounce back you will get the next year when your juniors/ any sophomores have actual varsity experience going into the next year.

Other than that, things are great. The drama continues. Just when our RT was cleared from his concussion, we lost two more OL for at least this week. Our RG, the kid with the asthma/anxiety attacks, thinks he has a concussion. He said that he thinks that he got it about halfway through Tuesday's practice. What didn't help was that he finished the practice and said nothing despite the fact he was asked by multiple coaches if he was OK and said that he was. We asked because he was acting a little spacey. He's normally spacey, though, so when he said that he was OK we had no reason not to believe him. Now his backup is out with back spasms. We're thin at WR/FS. Luckily, there's a 6'3" 190 lb. freshman who's been tearing it up on the JV's. We played him some last week and physically looked good but he made some mental errors, which we understood happens with young players. This week he refused to practice with the varsity. His dad called the HC and said that both he and his son are firm in their decision to only play JV. The funny thing is that this weekly sitcom has helped to change my mind. I'd planned to retire after this year and told the coaches (and nobody else) that. Now, my feeling is that if I'm going to get my a$$ whipped with sophomores damn if I'm going to let somebody else get the rewards next year. Of course, we're 1-4 so if we don't win a couple it might not be my decision.

He REFUSED to practice with the varsity? I didn't realize that was an actual thing...
I would have cut off my arm to practice and play with the varsity when I was a frosh.

It isn't a thing and won't be either. You'd cut off you're arm. All that he cut off was the sleeves from his practice jersey. That's not a thing with us either.

Over the years I had as many refuse to move up, or after being on Varsity want to go back down, as were glad for the opportunity.

My JV QB who has thrown for over 1000 yards in 5 games is out this week. He got a concussion scrimmaging out varsity backups because he tucked the ball and got up field on a broken pass play.
JV and varsity our separate but come on guys, we are one program. Don't take a kill shot on any QB.

I'm on my second and seventh string OTs because of ineligibility, bad ankles, and three fractured fingers.
I'm on my third and fifth CBs due to suspension, stomach flu, and a fractured thumb.
I'm on my third string QB due to the aforementioned flu and thumb.
I have one FS. My second FS just started practicing in pads a week ago because he did a back flip off a bench celebrating a summer basketball tournament win.
Haven't started the same 5 OL yet and we are halfway through our season.
It's been a hell of a year.

Got beat 57-0., the third straight game in which we've had a running clock. More injuries, too. Our Rover hurt his shoulder and our FS got a dislocated knee. Thing is, the score was 0-0 after the first quarter but whenever we got a bad break we folded. At half it was 28-0 but when we kicked off they scored, without a long return, in 48 freakin' seconds. I know that a lot of this is because we're so long (At one point out entire front eight were sophomores) but it's been season from hell.

I coached a retired 11 year stater in the NFL. When he was a freshman we tried to move him up to varsity, but he wanted to stay down. We weren't very good that year, and he wanted to stay with his buddies and they were winning some games. It happened 20 years ago.

Fantom,
I can relate. It's been that kind of season for us too. We started the season with 44. We will be down to 25 now that we have hit our fall break period. 4 lost for season with injuries, numerous kids quitting. Most of them quit when they were going to be punished for making poor mistakes. Some of them it is social media and they are talking crap about the coaching staff. It gets perpetuated because adults are too, even ones in our building. I don't peruse social media but if it gets brought to my attention there are consquences - I see it as a teaching moment - would you want to say that about your boss? But they don't care.
AD told me I probably wouldn't be able to be brought back - this is my second year and I was told that after a 0-3 start. We reeled off 3 straight wins then played well last night against a really good team. AD still says probably no choice because parents aren't happy.
It is a train wreck and with no support anywhere, it's miserable! So we're in the same boat and thanks for your posts as it at least makes me feel not alone!!

Lmao what kind of AD has that talk with his coach in week 3 DURING the season?! One with no spine. One that is too concerned about their own job. One that has already fired HC's from 3 other sports. This is at a school where all, literally all, of our sports are god awful. We won twice as many games as our basketball team last season and will probably at least equal them again this year. The AD will be gone too if the corporation cares at all but not sure if they do. The real problem is just two fold - little to no athletic talent or ability anywhere and a horrible, entitled school culture. It's not enough to do things the right way and treat people well.

for the past 3 weeks ive been missing one of my 3 starting running backs due to "mid school year vacation" - aparently thats the thing here.... i blew up at a mom who told me that the first week... probably not the best career move but whatever :-P
3 weeks ago - my starting halfback informs me that his parents are taking him for a week to mexico 2 weeks ago - my starting fullback informs me that his parents are taking him for a week to hawaii last week - my starting wingback went camping for a week.
i dont blame todays youth...i blame the 80s and 90s parents for creating the 2000s parents that we are dealing with.

It comes down to priorities. Youth sports and even high school sports in some areas just aren't that important to kids anymore. It's seen more as a "chance for my kid to run around and have fun with his friends" than a competitive contest. Sports just aren't the kids' or parent's number one priority anymore.

ACLs, colloarbone, concussions, high ankle sprain, shoulder separated, etc, etc
Yep, we are right there with you!
Started season 2-0 with huge potential, then injuries rained down like crazy all at once. Dropped 3 straight we probably would've won if healthy.
Second year in a row like this. Starting to feel cursed

Dropped to 0-5 on Friday...next three weeks we play the three best teams in our conference. Let's just say we dont match up very well. Anyone ever had a year that makes you questions everything you do as a program, from the offense you run to the socks you wear.
