Mercifully, our season ended tonight. Got hammered by a team that was 0-9. Worst year of my 36 years in coaching. WE had at least eight possible starters and, at least, contributors quit. Some of then quit when they were about to be starters. Five starters were out with injuries at the end. Egos, helicopter parents, everything that makes a team suck we had it.

I am with you fantom, we are done as well. It was over last Friday night for us. One of the worst seasons in recent school history. But it was one of the worst groups I've ever been around - the most uncoachable and entitled group of kids I've ever been around. Nothing we could do could fix it and believe me we tried. On to the next one now. Best of luck to you moving forward.

We have on more game. We were at the top to the cycle for about 10 years. When I say top I mean next level type of kids. 9 to 10 plus win seasons were the norm. For the last 5 years we are at the complete bottom of the cycle. 8 to 9 losses are the norm. Our senior class had 3 different head coaches. Senior class while not talented were awesome kids and to be honest the majority of the kids on the team were solid individuals just not very good at football. I remember thinking when we were good how nice it would be to just be IN A GAME.... and not blow someone out. NOW .... I would love to just blow someone out.

Our season hinges on tonight. We win we are in, we lose it's basketball season. Sometimes I don't know who wants it more, the kids or the coaches. So much back talk and whining from kids now. I remember when I played if a coached told me something I said yes or no and fixed it. Now when we try to coach a kid it's excuses and reasons why we are wrong. Just crazy

fantom's and hammer's post show that winning DOESN'T cure everything or beget winning forever.
There is a school in our state who made it to the Semi-Finals in both 2012 and 2013, is now on a 22-game losing streak including having to forfeit two games this Fall because of numbers.
Stay in one place long enough and chances are sooner or later you will have to rebuild your own program.

The smartest thing our new Head Coach did was move one of our Varsity assistants from last year down to the JR HIGH level. He teaches in the Middle school. Our numbers have sucked the last five years especially at 7-9 grade team and if you don't get them involved at the age your doomed. The guy is an average coach but a great guy and was able to recruit the heck out the school and had close to 40 kids on the team for us thats double the normal. We will have 22 kids moving up next year and that will put at around 45 kids on Varsity/JV. Again those numbers are about plus 10 from the norm. If he is able to do that again we will be able to turn it around.

The best thing about {censored} disappointing seasons full of attitude problems is they do come to an end.

Our injury riddled season finally came to an end but on a good note.....well...except for the kid that ended up going to the ER before the game was over.
Both our QB's were out, one with concussion and the other was walking wounded, dressed down but not expecting to play, at least not the QB position.
So the freshman QB starts and to our surprise, goes off for 2 TDs and 170 yds at half!!! Then in the 1st drive of the second half, gets annihilated on a middle screen (same play that destroyed our starter) and is rolling around like a weeble wobble on his back. Off the the ER he goes....
Believe it or not, this story actually ends on a good note, possibly first of our season. Our walking wounded 2nd stringer says, "put me in coach, I can do this!" (Had his knee drained day before and has a legit separated shoulder). So being that we had literately no one else we said...OK! The kid pulled it together, converted a clutch 4th down and threw the game winning TD that helped us win a game we had no business winning, at least on paper. The team we beat was a playoff team from our league as well.

We were so spastic this year.
Week one we got annihilated by one of the best teams in the country, and one with a reputation for rubbing it in, but we take it in stride and beat the #4 team in the country with a great team game an executing our best stuff.
Then we lay an egg against one of the worst teams in the country, then we play two good games, a loss then a win, and we play a good half against another top team but it fell apart in the second half.
So we go into our second last game with basically a win and in against a team roughly on our level, and we put up the most humiliating display you could imagine. Our offense did nothing. Nothing. Our defence was maybe worse, who knows. Every time they ran a pass play I wanted to walk over to their booth and ask their OC if he had some kind of nervous tick, because there was no other explanation for not running it down our throats every single play.
Being the nerd that I am I found us a back door into the playoffs. It was six tiebreakers deep and required a lot of help but I estimated we had a 3-5% chance but we had to win. But the damage was done and we went through the motions our last game. It was so weird all year, the quality of our practices had no bearing on our play on Saturday.
The team that crushed our souls week seven ended up losing their last game in a weird way, so that top team we beat who ended up having a tough year losing close games squeaked into the playoffs and that made us the only non playoff team to beat a playoff team in the conference this year. After that win people were calling us a dark horse. We played SO WELL. Nothing unreasonable, just avoiding the dumb mistakes that sank our season.

I love that excuse! I saw it on Facebook or Twitter or my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who said that Bobby moved away last week. I tried, but I couldn't keep up with this one at all! Lol

It's not so much the season/wins/losses/kids for me this year, as it is the schedule. We have a 10 week regular season, but in SC you can petition to play what we call Week Zero; the week usually everyone has their last jamboree/end of preseason. We had a odd number of teams in our region, so we married up with the next region over that was also in the same boat and drew lots to match up. So we worked it out with the team we drew to move the game back to the non-region portion of our schedule and then scheduled a Week Zero game. That way we had a bye week during region play. Then hurricane Matthew came the week of our bye week. It didn't really affect the Upstate and we had a bye week anyway, but the weather and subsequent flooding cause many schools to miss 2 weeks of school. So the HSL pushed back the start of playoffs 2 weeks to allow those missed games to be made up before the playoffs started. That meant that half the state would have had 2 weeks after the conclusion of the regular season before the playoffs started. So the HSL allowed teams to move one of their final games back a week to alleviate this long lay off. We moved our last game back a week. Original schedule: Regular season - Week 0 (August 19)/Week 1 (August 26) - Week 10 (October 28) with a bye Week 7 for us Play offs - Round 1 (November 4) - Finals (December 20) New Schedule - Week 0/1 - Week 10+2 (November 11) Playoffs - Round 1 (November 18) - Finals (December 17) So, our end of the year run looks like this: Sept 30 Region game #1 October 7 original bye week October 14 Region game #2 October 21 Region game #3 October 28 bye week/original final region game/Week 10 November 4 Region game #4 November 11 bye week/end of regular season November 18 Playoffs start So that means that from the start of region play (this determines who makes the playoffs and where you are seeded) until the beginning of the 1st round of the play offs we play 4 games in a 42 day period. And finally it is play off time. Also, I saw this over the weekend our smallest classification (single A) has it even worse. Since there are so few number of teams that each region winner has a first round bye for the playoffs. There are a few teams that played their last regular season game on Oct 28th and won't play their first playoff game until Nov 25th.

Played our first playoff game last Friday with plenty of rest and injuries healed. Going into our 2nd playoff game this week 100% healthy.

And the season keep rolling along. and along. and along. and along.
The HSL is meeting this morning to consider postponing the playoffs a week because of poor air quality created by forest fires in the mountains. 2 counties/school districts prohibited outdoor activities yesterday.
So if we have to push back the playoffs, that would be 3 weeks total. The round of the Finals would be on Christmas Eve.
