Some things to consider digging up info on......maybe talk to one of the HCs that filled through there?
-admin support?
-weight room experience?
You want to know before you go in if the AD is also the baseball coach and tells all the athletes to do fall ball......or if the school board is a pain, etc
You also want to know what type of culture you have weight room wise......this is your quickest path to success.

I have never had a Navy Seal threaten to kill me, but I had a drunk guy at rodeo utter the same words when his wife was rubbing up against me after she had too many. He probably wouldn't have been as mad had I not been smiling so big. I worked in North Carolina close to Fort Bragg and had a kid who played baseball for me. Not a great player, but a great kid. His dad was a sniper in the army and would be gone for random spurts for 2-3 weeks at a time. I guess he would have to go on "missions." When he did the kid would be pretty guarded, but still a great kid. Anyway, he was a lefty and played first base. His dad stops me after a practice one day and just asked what the kid could work on to get better and if there was any help he could provide for the kid to get better. Great dad and great kid. I decided to start the kid next game, it was JV baseball so what a better life lesson for the bunch than if a kid is trying to improve himself he might get an opportunity. We get to the game and we go to take In/Out and the kid looks at me like he saw a ghost. "Coach I forgot my glove." He was the only lefty so he was screwed. After the game his dad looked me dead in the eye and said "Coach I appreciate you giving him a chance, but never play his butt again." Had a kid once who was a great kid, hard worker, showed up to everything but would trip over the lines on the field. Terrible athlete. Came up to me one day and says- Coach, you always say if we work hard and show up we'll play for you over people that don't. Why don't I play? Kid called me out and he was right. Next week we start him at corner against a power house program in the area who would end up going to the quarterfinal that year. Thing is they ran 90% of time inside the tackles, so he wasn't going to hurt us. About 1 minute left in the half they get the ball back and go hurry up and throwing the ball (we ended up losing 17-14). With 45ish seconds left they throw a fade to the WR this kid's covering. CB kid isn't within 30 yards of the WR. He followed some slant to the middle of the field (cover 3). Thankfully it's overthrown and incomplete. Kid immediately runs off the field and says "Don't play me anymore. I suck." So, we didn't. He became our special team all star This is why we never say attendance and hard work equal starting......I realized it wasn’t fair to the other 10 kids on the field

You have to hold them accountable.
I also think you shouldn't paint yourself into a corner.
You will find just as many exceptions to the rule as you do cases that fit it.
My old college coach had the best team rule: "Act like a man, get treated like a man. Act like a child, get treated like a child."

Simplicity becomes the answer whenever execution suffers.
Until execution suffers, you want to have as many answers for moving the football as possible.
Learn ability is where real coaching is, IMO......HOW you teach technique and assignment is more important than WHAT you are teaching.
Can you get your kids confident and knowledgeable enough to execute? That’s what matters.

Facts don’t change opinions, but relationships can.
And I never believe a kid who says “I would but my parents.....”

Peer accountability is the best way to go.
When your kids don’t miss because they don’t want to let their buddies down, your life will be much easier

I left a pure white collar industry to join a construction firm because of the workers. There is an unabashed honesty to those guys....good and bad. Plus, they stay grounded....priorities are straight: feed your family, do your job, etc. No BS, falseness, PC, etc Plus I get to say {censored} way more in that industry

It does not always hold that “moving down to move back up” is the way to go....
Sometimes the bigger guys think that as a position coach at the larger school they are better than a coordinator at a small school.
You gotta understand they are different beasts, and that while you may have a more complicated/in depth scheme knowledge at the higher levels (because of resources/time), that is only about 10% of the job.
Your success will always be predicated on getting good athletes out and to get them committed to developing themselves, and how you do that at smaller schools is different than larger ones.
THAT is the reason a lot of big guys will struggle when they come down to smaller schools.
I think a lot of coaches want to grow up before they are ready......and they chase things too early and get burned out....this board is littered with those stories.
I would think most HCs would never hire a coordinator who hasn’t been on their staff proving themselves for a few years.......

If our focus is on winning, we will become failures...,.if we focus on genuine care for one another, the winning will take care of itself.......this isn’t my program, it is our program, and from the star player to the ball boy, everyone will matter, and be honored.

So, in my twenties I was a “get on board or get gone” type of coach. If a kid missed summer stuff, had a bad attitude, etc we were better off without him.
As I got older, and through the influence of my HC, I’ve adopted the idea that we are the last stop before real life hits them in the face, and that you should rarely give up on a kid.
That doesn’t mean you don’t hold them accountable, in fact, caring for them means you do......but you almost never kick them off. Second chance (with consequences)....again and again.
Somehow, kids with behavior/laziness problems don’t effect our team moral.....the true cancers are the kids you have no justification to kick off, they are just selfish crappy leaders.
Our worst years were entitled seniors who showed up to weights, worked hard, but were ultimately selfish.
Anyway, back to the topic: anyone else have this transformation? Any one think I’m just a {censored}?

This has been our worst year.
On a roster of 36, we've had 4 season ending injuries to some of the best players in our program's history.
1.) Only Power 5 commit in our school's history - DE/TE...…..breaks collarbone game one
2.) School's single season rushing leader in 2018 as a sophomore (2,300 yards in 12 games)……..break ankle game one
3.) Strongest kid in our program's history. 15 year old power cleaning 315 lbs. DT/OL.....ACL tear game 4
4.) 3 year starter at OL/DL......starting Center, runs the show......ACL tear first round of playoffs
And yet, because of some depth and a good Q, we are sitting 11-1, just won a sectional title and are angling for a regional title this week.
The silver lining? 3 of these guys will be back next year.

Low 30s last season, low 40s this season.
We had a small senior class leave and large incoming fresh class account for most of that.....but the recruiting trail did yield some fruits

I appreciate the honesty of this thread.....
That being said, yes......sometimes the drill work gets boring AF
At the same time, I think the most valuable use of offseason prep (coaching wise) is to find new drills/group periods.
Example:
Last off season we meet with a school that has their OL works their board drills going from one knee on the ground.
So, lead right, right knee on ground.
The point is to isolate pushing off the left foot to take your first step.
Result: it has almost eliminated our false steps!
A lot of clinic stuff is "look at this scheme stuff we are doing".....to me, the best is when you get to see how they drill/teach it, because stealing one thing can make a world of difference.
Also, to fight the boring malaise of practice, coach up your younger kids you maybe don't spend enough time with.....they appreciate the attention.

Watch Key and Peele skits on YouTube.....forget the time....realize the locker room got quiet and I’m the only coach in the office......go to the field and putter around aimlessly......go back inside and finish last skit.......climb on top of the box and try to decide the celebrity doppelgänger for the umpire.....

Best ones I’ve ever heard of:
Pregame: “Talk is cheap, let’s play ball” -Johnny Unitas
Halftime, UCLA is down to an inferior team.....wooden walks in and the team shuts up......he says nothing for 10 minutes, he then stands and as he is turning toward the door says “well ladies, let’s go finish our waltz@
