Don't let their best guy beat you, simplest rule ever.
ALsO, the Squib might be one of the most under rated kicks ever. It takes forever to get down the field, it takes forever to field, and all of that combines to allow the coverage team more time to get down the field and make the play before it gets started.

BLB, I have a question:
Being up north, I know your players were more well adjusted than here in the south, but what tricks or advice do you have for skill players in the cold?
I know one thing I used to do was wear latex gloves under my WR gloves to keep the wind out at least. Another trick I used was keeping my internal(area under my pads) as warm as possible to hopefully keep the extremities with warmer(No clue if that's scientifically accurate).

I have been at really, really good schools in the past, only in my 9th year, but my current schools sounds like all of yall's. Glad I'm not the only one contemplating life over here.
That being said, in Tennessee, the NIL stuff has started showing up in pockets, so my question to all of you now is:
1) Have any of yall seen NIL make an impact yet? 2) Do you think that it will only create a larger gap between the "Have's" and "Have not's"?

We only used Qwikcut for practice, clinic tape, or College/NFL game film. Since Qwikcut has unlimited storage that was our best option. I was at a school that was extremely talent rich, the coaching was staff was Dang good, and because of those two things we were playing 2 pre-season scrimmages, 1 jamboree, and 14-15 games a year for 5 years. We ate up the storage space in hudl extremely fast.

The last school I was at, if there was no opportunity to play they were not going to take the time to learn it. So Freshman- Sophomore year for sure they were gonna play grab A!$ basically, once the opportunity to play significantly became real the players would make it more of a priority to learn.

Would any of you argue that opportunity makes a difference?
As in how fast the opportunity to play makes a difference?

That is correct. Pretty unique place, the Offense and Defense basically never practice together since they can't really service each other, but they're still extremely effective at what they do.

If anyone is running triple Harding is definitely the place to visit. They are great guys, and very open and honest. They will help you a TON. It was absolutely the best clinic I've ever been to. They are truly an open book schematically and I think a place like Harding culture takes care of itself.

Thanks for that info! Last season was the entire staff's season in the triple. So we've been grinding all off-season for answers on some things. Everyone said Harding was the place to go.

The trend of "superstar" coaches is not a trend. It's becoming a staple. It's happening all over the place. Deion was just the first, the innovator, if you will. In Tennessee I know we've had Dilfer, and now Kevin Mawae. Jason Witten interviewed for the same job after Dilfer left. Witten is currently HC at a private school in Texas.

Having the confidence and belief just to attempt goes A LONG WAY. One of my most favorite quotes "Wheteher you think you can or you can't, either way you're right." Confidence changes everything about your mindset and attitude.

@ Coachwoodall, If you read the previous sentence, that is exactly what i said. "I'm currently at a football tradition poor school".

IMO, the value of a successful football team isn't able to be quantified. As Coachcb just said, the cascade effect of impacting all boys sports is incalculable. I've been a part of 3 successful football schools, the amount of confidence those kids had allowed them to attempt more things in life in general(academics, athletics, etc.).
I'm currently at a football tradition poor school, and our kids have 0 confidence. THis applies in all aspects of life, sports, academics, weight training, etc. Just a total fear of failure.
So my question is how do you measure the value of confidence?

I think this totally disrupts what team sports are all about, however money talks B.S. walks, so my opinion is irrelevant. cwaltsmith, do you foresee any recruiting violations coming from this? We're in the same state, and my biggest concern is there is already a massive void between the "have's" and the "have-not's" do you think this makes that void larger?

Young coach, position Coach at that, but just throwing my .02 cents in.
Leadership is a learned behavior. There are plenty of kinds of strong leadership: Strong leadership that is productive, Strong leadership that is counterproductive. I would venture to say that all or most coaches have strong leadership.
WE as coaches are the models for the behaviors/products we want to shape and mold. I am not, I cannot, and I will not speak for other coaches, but the following are my experiences. I repeat these are my experiences.
School A: Had 8-9 coaches, all strong disciplinarians, model citizens, husbands, and fathers. This was a coach led team full of behaved, hard working kids, and for the most part loved football for the camaraderie. So we hardly ever had bad. Most these kids came from 2 parent homes, with strong moral upbringings, so do the math.
School B: Had 8-9 coaches, a mixed bag of coaches, but still model citizens. We tried the Team led route, and it worked for 1 year (2019). After 2019, the whole world changed, i think most agree. School B's character is less than perfect I'll say, 90%+ come from 1 parent households, living with grandparents, very poor, and strong gang influences. Students fight over what street they're from, what gang they're with etc. SO do the math there.
I said that to say this, Kids have not changed, it's been reiterated throughout all of history. What has changed is expectations, standards, and the worst part above all of this, is the fact that Coaches have went from being a group that saw rules/expectations/standards as black and white, to rules/expectations/standards being "Gray".
If Player 1 can help the team be successful and then Player 1 gets in trouble its a gray area because we may lose. If Player 2 gets in trouble and it has no impact then Player 2 gets the boot.
If winning is the ONLY thing that matters then this is the model to follow, but be prepared to DEAL with a lot of S*&T.
All players and kids will follow rules/expectations/standards, whatever you want to call them, BUT there can be no fluctuation, no Gray areas, because anyone that has been successful will tell you Consistency is vital. Therefore when you set your standards you cannot back up an inch. If you give an inch, kids will take a mile, but if you stand your ground they will do what is asked and more.

I have downloaded every drill tape, teach tape, and all game film from the games I wanted from the past two schools I've worked for.
I save them to both an external hard drive, and a one drive. I also save the excel sheet with data input. Currently I have 3 seasons from the current school, and 1 season from my previous school. If we play state championship quality opponents, or if we play opponents that do something very well (IZ, RPO, etc etc) I save that film as well for my own research.

THanks guuys, I really appreciate all the information, and advice. coachwoodall , my apologies I somehow missed that the first time I read your post. These are the things I need to really correct/tighten up my Academic Plan. cqmiller I want my program to exemplify doing things the right in every way, which hopefully still translates to wins, but winning is not my most important aspiration. THanks for enforcing this belief.

All of these are really good/great ideas. My next question is this: What do you all do when you have the kids that truly just DGAF about academics?
I only ask because the current school I'm working for, though incredibly talented, is extremely low academically. I mean we had 3 subjects on the state EOC that were "TOO low to score".

This is something I've been looking for as a plan. Thank you for that. The question now becomes what is the punishment for: 1) If they're failing do you let them play? Or do you cut playing time no matter what? 2) If a player refuses to take the learning/tutoring/study hall session, what the consequence for that?
|
|
|
Post by RunThePistol on Jan 26, 2022 10:04:56 GMT -6
THat's why I'm hesitant about punishing, but yes I am. I'm currently just an assistant and I do grade checks on my position guys.
