In HS we didn't, but when I played ball in college it counted as a PE credits.

WE had a very successful season. I coach a youth 5th grade team. We went 7-1 in the regular season only giving up 2 TDs on defense. Our lone loss was by a point. Went into the playoffs as the #2 seed and won our semi-final game 13-0 giving up just one first down (on a chain measurement too). In the finals, we played a team who hadn't lost in 3 seasons. It was a great game, but in the end we came up short. Boys fought hard till the end. First team in our city to make it to an AYF state final. 5 of the boys made the in-state all star team. Congrats on the great season Thanks man. Honestly, the best part was how the boys, and team have improved each of the past 3 seasons.

Simpson, being a 5th grade coach and having my son on my team, I can see both sides of this. Now, my son is a lineman so I don't have this issue. If your son is better than the other backs... then I do think the coach may be making a mistake. I'm sure other coaches and parents on this board have seen and been through the same issue. I hope you want what's best for your child and not to make him the "star". Either way, hope it works out.

My oline are the superstars of my team. Anyone can run a ball through a designated hole (granted the good backs make it even better), but not everyone can play line. I let my line know each practice and game that it is ultimately up to them. Being a linemen my whole career, I know the value. We have had kids quit this season who wanted to be rbs, even though we have kids play with us for 5 years now that no longer run the ball. Just the dynamics of the team this year.

Wow, i coach a 5th grade team and if I put my best linemen out there, our lightest is probably about 115 lbs. Our two biggest are around 140 or so with a couple in between. Most are pretty athletic too, not just big kids. Our starting FB goes about 120 as well

We are now 1-0. Only because of a 70 yard HB TD pass with 40 seconds to play. Won the game 6-2. Defense played well enough to win, but offense struggled to move the ball. Oline didn't play well at all which is a bit surprising because they are one of the better olines at this level in our state. Next game won't be fun. The opponent is so bad. I hate those types of games, but it will give our newer players a lot of playing time.

I coach a 5th grade team with similar numbers and we have manditory playing time. What we have done in the past is create 2-3 offensive groups (mixed abilities) for both offense and defense. On top of that we have our "stud" unit for offense and defense which will be used if needed. We are way more likely to use our top defensive players than ones for offense. Just one idea.

IMO getting out of a 3 point stance should get more of a "fire out" technique and should give the blocker more of an advantage to stay low. Players need to rep rep rep those techniques for firing out, proper feet work, etc.

So we ended up with a 6-2 regular season record and the 4th seed in the playoffs. So it seemed as if everything got stacked up against us going into the first round. Game was moved up a day and we weren't able to practice with such a short notice. Game was held at the other team's homefield even though we were seeded higher. We had 5 turnovers in the first half...more than the rest of the season combined. Each one deep in our own end. Losing 12-0 at half. Got a score in the third quarter, and drove in the fourth inside their 10. On 4th and 2, I swear we got 5 yards, but a terrible spot gave the ball back to the opponent and not enough time left. Defense played great as usually. Terrible way to end it, but we didn't really deserve to win anyways.

Recorded a 33-6 win to up our record to 5-2. Scored on the opening kickoff and never looked back. Our qbs hit every pass but 1 today. Pretty good since our two qbs are two of the shortest kids on our team. Defense played great as usual and just dominated the game. One more game before playoffs begin.

34-0 win vs a very bad team. Defense once again gave up NO first downs. Could have run wedge all day. Wedge probably averaged 12-15 yards/carry. Mercy rule kicked in by halftime so the entire second half was a running clock. RBs finally ran hard and made the right cuts. O and D lines just completely dominated. Was able to give the ball to kids who would normally never touch it. You know how olinemen love to get involved that way...

Lost 12-6 today. Boys came out flat in first half. WE tied the score at 6 with about 2 minutes to go in the half. Only to give up a td with 2 seconds before halftime. Our own rbs are killing us. Huge lanes and holes, but the kids are insisting on always cutting inside towards all of the defenders. After watching the film, both our o and d lines dominated their lines. One of those games where you just say..."what could have been". Biggest difference was our poor tackling.

Game 2... Won 6-0! Our defense dominated once again only giving up 1 first down. It was a battle of field position all day. The offense moved the ball, but sputtered each drive. Gotta give credit to the other team as well. Game could easily have been more of a blowout if it weren't for 3 lost fumbles. 2-0 on the early season for this fourth grade team.

Won our first game of the season 32-0 against possibly the worst team in the league. The other team wouldn't play a corner on both sides of the field. I don't even know how to explain what they were trying to do. Could have scored a td every play on a sweep if we wanted to. Our leagues mercy rule kicks in at 28 points so we just ran up the middle with over half of our guys getting a chance to run the ball. Of course the linemen loved it. Our D just swallowed them up giving up 0 first downs in the ball game.

Scrimmaged Thursday night vs one of the best teams in the league. We held our own. Was basically a draw. Defense looked great. We are basically running a 6-3 (safety moved up) and double wing offense. The oline needs work. They just aren't firing out.
Saturday we had our preseason jamboree. Pretty much dominated the three partial games. The one tough team we played once again showed how the oline needs to fire out and maintain their blocks. We saw improvement, but still have some things to iron out.
Good to luck to everyone this season

Like Mahonz said, its a shame that isn't being run this way. Getting in condition through skill/positional work is the way to go, and not just running and running. They should have had some type of plan heading into the season.

OH yeah, my students play that type of game in gym class. Its like ultimate frisbee...I think they just refer to it as ultimate ball. Thats a good idea for a team game

Oh god no. Like you said, many of the kids do need to get use to their body movements and use to football movements again. I know other places have similar type rules for youth teams. Just looking for some insight on what they actually do to keep it fresh.

So as the new season approaches, I was looking to see what some of you other youth coaches do in your first week of practice. I coach a fourth grade team, and our first week must be a "conditioning week" before pads are allowed to be used. We have to get 10 hours in before the hitting begins the second week. So just looking for some suggestions, or what you do if you have the same situation. Thanks That sounds very counterproductive to me. Since conditioning can be achieved fairly fast, it would make more sense to have that around preseason. Strength and speed however is a longer process. If you want them to do something to get them ready, before putting on pads, I'd suggest easy bodyweight movements. That way they get to now their own bodies, and they will get a better base form, to build on. Whenever you let them get their pads on, teach them proper tackling and blocking. And let them have fun. Fourth grade football isn't about winning, it's about letting the kids have fun, while being as safe as possible. Getting them ready for the next level is a great bonus. I'm not trying to be harsh on you, your plan just sounds a bit off to me. Maybe you misunderstood me, its not my plan, its the league/state rules to have 10 hours of "conditioning" before full pads for contact can be worn.

I think this has been brought up, but I couldn't find it. Anyways, I am the OC of a 4th grade football team. This is the first year where the coaches will be calling plays from the sidelines. I've read how some people like to use the white boards, wrist bands, and/or picture cards. I was thinking of using the whiteboard since I have those available, but would like to hear other people's point of view. We are a double wing offense and was thinking that the kids would also learn and know the picture cards quickly but what do you do with the pictures if you want the play going left or right? Just some info would be nice. Thanks.

Ours was 2 practices a week, with games on Sundays. We practiced the basics, but tried to make sure the kids had fun. Our team was very successful at both.

Maybe this was already said, but last week on ABC world news two of those coaches got suspended. The Broncos coach and the coach of the Colts
