What are your keys to deciding your choices on the coin toss? I once worked for a guy, new to head HS coaching, former middle school guy. Said his philosophy was to ALWAYS take the ball. We played one night on a hill top stadium and the wind was really blowing. I told him to think about defending with the wind at our back. He took the ball, the other team took the wind and a close matchup had us trailing 0-24 after one qtr. Lost 0-41. Next week strong wind again. We take the ball. SMH didn't you have your back to the wind during two of those quarters??

Lets talk the best part of practice, getting a scout team look, mostly on offense. What are some of your tips and tricks for an effective session? We are a small program of about 40 kids, and our best "tricks" (that I'm sure a lot of people use) are color coding the skill guys, trying to match body type to the scout player (opponent has a 220 pound running back, we use a kid whos 220 even if hes not a back for example) and also putting our opponents plays in our terms. What are some other things you guys do to get the best look possible, or does everyone just have the All-District DE teeing off on a 175 pound freshman LT, who just played a JV game the night before? The absolute best thing I ever did on Scout O was to just simulate all the snaps. The QB will start the play with the ball in his hands and slap it after he calls for the snap to start the play while the C just hikes an empty hand back. It saves the period from devolving into a waste of time when your scout C is having problems or doesn't even know how to snap. The second thing I find best is to let the most athletic coach play scout team QB, so we at least know there will be some reasonable decisions made with the football. This coach is in shorts and a t-shirt, so he's not allowed to be hit. Instead of a sack, let him throw the pass so the secondary guys get some work. After that, if at all possible, try to have the same 5 dudes as your "scout" OL and just tell them the blocking schemes in your terminology ("Alright guys, up front this is just like Power Right."). Then don't just color code your skill guys, but also number them. That way, when the formation changes, the skill guys just find their number and move. Script everything and give EVERY SINGLE COACH involved in the drill a script that you've worked out in advance. This should script the Scout offensive play, as well as the defensive call against that. The point isn't to puff up everybody's ego and shut down the Scout O, though I have worked with a DC who seemed to enjoy that. The point is so that every coach knows what's coming and knows what their guys need to be doing to stop it. Try to script some very unfavorable looks for the defense in there, like running a play right at a spot that the front is stunting out of. If you can have 2 scout huddles going, that's another great way to knock out reps quickly: one will run the play while the other is getting their play. When the last play is dead, you spot the ball and the 2nd group is ready to line up and roll while the other scout huddle gets their next play. If you're more focused on trying to get a physically even matchup, half line and individual/group periods are where you're going to be in the best shape to do that. Another think I like on scout O is to have the offensive coaches (if they are available) there to watch the scout kids and coach them on technique and fundamentals so the reps are meaningful for the scout players, too. If the scout OL is running your Power scheme and a kid screws up, this is a chance to coach him up and correct that. If a scout WR screws up a stalk block because he's out of position or loafing, that's a chance for coaching. Etc. Right ..We have always had the HC run the Off Scout and the DC run the D scout. I was a DC so I ran it putting it in my terms and then we would coach the kids..good stances good back pedal watch the qb's eys spill your block etc

what is interesting to me is that guys are taking clips from TV, providing commentary and selling it..is that even legal?
I highly doubt it... I'm surprised the social media platforms haven't been nailed for that.
The guy I am thinking of takes clips from all-22 film, comments on it, and like sells it in an e-book or something. It's actually pretty cool but not sure if its legal and kinda weird because its not his team

I follow a few football pages on Facebook (don't use Twitter) and my only issue is the "dressed-up" misinformation. There are guys on there that post up some fantastically detailed videos and diagrams but it's obvious that they're keyboard coaches. There's some pretty obvious flaws within the scheme that they won't address. Everything is going to look pretty when you're running the Wing-T against a 4-3 Over C2.. what is interesting to me is that guys are taking clips from TV, providing commentary and selling it..is that even legal?

I find that teaching districts pay just enough for you to barely make it...We get paid very well here I am at 20 years and make 90+. That sounds like a lot until you see that a shack is basically 300,000. My wife and I are fine because we bought 20 years ago. You definitely need two incomes to get by. I use my stipend for XMas and maybe a vacation. Here's my deal with teaching. I keep my head down and do my job. I NEVER get bothered. All the admin stuff is BS..do it anyway..I can count on the # of complaints with one hand that i have had. I teach a subject I like and and I would learn about in my free time..Business and computers..Kids sign up for my classes so I recruit them too
Absolutely... When someone asks about me in teaching circles they either have something positive to say or they don't know me at all. I fly under the radar, focus on doing my job and everything else falls by the wayside. The bosses want something done, I do it. They want me to change something, I do it. Every administrator I've worked for knows this about me and they leave me alone because of it.
I have seen many teachers pile a ton of stress on themselves because they won't stay in their lane and/or they try to buck the administration. Of course they're going to get burned out when they're dealing with managing their classroom, teaching and then handling all of the other bullchit drama they've caused.
One thing I notice is that teachers get so worked up about their "program" Its like they have nothing else in their life and have to fight, fight, fight to protect it like the things would actually change if they left. Selfish one way people..just like in real life

Notes: as far as money..no matter where you go people will complain. I got out of hs and worked at a power 5 school in recruiting..these guys making big bucks they whined on about a daily basis about this or that. They whined about other things too..It pissed me off as I was expecting motivated dudes..Nope People are people... Money, they would just open up USA Today and find someone else making more and then feel bad too I took a year off and really enjoyed it..thinking about doing it again too..then retiring and maybe travel to europe and coach

I think it's more about respect than intellectual property or anything like that. We're all coaches, and we constantly steal from each other. Just have the respect for another coach to say "Oh I got that from XXX." That's all. Hell, I've been stealing stuff from jgordon1 for years. When people ask, I just refer them to his books. Not hard. I hear you. I sometimes run across articles that are word for word what I wrote.....no attribution...Frickin USA Football would literally take pages from my book and put them on their website...This is a multi million dollar company

I agree with most but just to be the devils advocate..You did make the stuff for the program..isn't it available for anyone to use? Would the admin know he didn't make it? etc

We had our first defensive shutout at the school I am currently at but lost by a TD because we gave up a pick 6. Was proud of the kids but it sucked pretty spectacularly. That's why I always say, that if you give up a pick 6 the points should be taken away from the offense..so in my mind you lost 0 to -6 thus preserving your ave PPG

I am wondering how many HCs are thinking about what if we DO have games from a coaching stand point this fall. What happens if the HC tests positive or one of the coordinators? What happens if a trainer or a manager tests positive? If one of the players test positive? Do you test or quarantine the entire team and forfeit the next week or two? Have you cross trained your staff? We are back to team conditioning but I just can’t see how this works out to having a season. I am now of the mindset that there won’t be a season but since it hasn’t been canceled the ruling body feels we need to prepare for it even though the chances of playing this season are slim at best. Here is a list of college teams that have had athlete test positive for Covid www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2020/06/21/coronavirus-college-sports-schools-reporting-positive-covid-tests-among-athletes/3231509001/

I’m in VA as well. I don’t see how we can go from working out 6 feet apart with no equipment or even ball to fully padded up in a month. Also that brings me to my second point. In my district we plan on /half/ of the kids coming only twice a week in-person with Monday being virtual for everyone. I doubt they let students come to school at all during the virtual day or day in which they’re not assigned—it defeats the purpose of the social distancing and staggered school times. Let’s say they do allow them to, now we need another bus run for all of our students who don’t have a car. We have an academy as well in my school so that means that kids live everywhere in the city. It’s a logistical nightmare no matter how you slice it.. That's exactly what I am thinking here in MA

I recently heard a podcast on USAFB on doing away with scout cards and just calling the play how our team would call it. I think this is a great idea. I think it will speed things up and allow our younger guys to learn our offense. My question is... if you are spread team and you are playing a wing-t team... how do you make it work? Have any of you gone away with scout cards? I prefer to do both. Still make the scout cards, but explain it in the scout huddle as “this is just like _____.” I only see this being 100% applicable to teams who run the same offense as everyone on their schedule (a lot of spread teams, I’m guessing) and can 2 platoon so the scout team players are all playing their normal positions when on Scout. right..we do it the same way..the only time we don't use cards all the time is in preseason when we practice against ourselves

Yeah, my post wasn't about a specific scheme as much as it was to that if the players aren't happy with said scheme, then you better have something else. See I really disagree on that one. Players often think they are better than they actually are, players are often selfish or interested in what they will get out of this VS what is best for the team. The culture piece here is why good teams become great teams even though they may not have superior talent. I can say for a fact that my players do not like our scheme. They would rather us spread the field and chuck it around like they see on TV. However when we go out and beat a team ranked higher than us there is no complaining. They understand the scheme and who "we" are. So players may not like the scheme but then that just means we need to sell it differently / facilitate buy in. just curious..what scheme do you use?
