Are there still Thanksgiving day games played out there? Use to be some in eastern PA , NE states have a lot I think, but haven't heard much about them this year, was wondering if they were starting to fade away. Can't see them lasting much longer or being around in the numbers they use to be in todays world.

As i continue the climb in age and to death, i appreciate them disappearing. Oh boy do I disagree. T-Day games are great. All part of the festivities, IMO. Especially during a weather day, and on grass!

Especially during a weather day, and on grass! But the timing just seems so prohibitive given that Thanksgiving falls during the playoffs in most states based on what I have read here. Meaning either the team is in the middle of a playoff run, OR they have picked up equipment several weeks prior. The logistics just seem a bit daunting.

Cold air, maybe some snow flurries, smell of the field, pulling clumps of grass out of your facemask... Too bad its all but gone***sigh***.

Especially during a weather day, and on grass! for me its family, holidays are more about family. I am more appreciative of that time. 3-5 days a year is enough, but it is also important to me. Especially because me and the sibling are getting older. 15 yrs ago, i would be with you.

The last one in our state I know of was over 40 years ago probably due to playoffs.
The two schools who played that annual Thanksgiving Day game do not exist anymore.

Massachusetts does. Come in between state semi finals and state finals so team playing in championship have made decision often to sit the 1s. Couple teams in area this year sat their 1s basically conceding Turkey Day and get smashed to ensure the starters are good to go next week. Some teams try to play to win. Both ways teams gave ended up winning state. Not sure about a lot of games but our Turkey Day game is always intense. Intra city rivalry in an open enrollment city so a lot of kids often friends and played youth together. There’s good banter between alumn and the kids, sometimes it gets really intense. Mon-Wed there’s lots of luncheons and dinners. It’s a fun week and although crowds are smaller (that’s pretty normal it seems now), a lot of people are very invested in the result.

I know awhile ago a team in PA played their Thanksgiving day game and then played a state playoff game on Sat. From everything I saw the Thanksgiving game was more important than the playoff game. After I posted I saw they played their annual game yesterday for like the 116th time or something.

The club I coach in had 7U flag football games on Thanksgiving morning. I don't know if that's a new thing, I don't recall an announcement in previous years. They're going by the slogan, "Thanksgiving is for football."
I was surprised to learn that in the middle of the 19th Century, Thanksgiving day was the traditional close of baseball season. Seems the Intercollegiate Football Association established football's link to Thanksgiving day by holding their championship game on that holiday beginning in 1876. That was about the only semblance of anything marking a football season at that time, since they played football any and all times of year. Even baseball clubs would get up games sporadically in the winter if they had a warm spell.
But it's said that outdoor sports and indoor and outdoor games were a part of the famous first American Pilgrims-and-fellow-travelers thanksgiving celebration, and we can't say for sure that none of the early ones included any kind of football.

Around here I guess they are being eliminated because we want to expand the state playoffs (NJ). But having games and then just cancelling them in the case a team makes the state finals seems to be a solution that is lost in many.

Does every team play a Thanksgiving game?

Most schools did but it is now mostly a thing in the southern part of the state at this point.

We absolutely love the tradition of our Thanksgiving day rivalry game!
Last year we had our state championship game the following week, but we still played our starters in the first half and ended up pulling out a win. Our opponent didn't dress their starters for TGiving, then ended up losing the state title game anyway.
My alma mater in Mass. just played its 109th TGiving day game vs their rival. It's amazing the number of generations that have played in these games. Hope the tradition never goes away.

We have been in the title game before and played our starters the whole game. That's how big it is. There are alumni in town who if had to choose, would choose a Thanksgiving Day win over a State Championship.

It was an honor to finally be in the exclusive group of teams who would be playing in a state final the following week.

Isn't it the oldest cross-state thanksgiving day game in the country?

I am not knocking it, but as I said, it seems odd that a great tradition can have backups in the game for 3/4ths of the action.

We use to play eachother twice a year for a while. That ended in the late 60s.

Every team in Mass. has had a TGiving day rivalry game for many, many years (whether they made the playoffs or not). The funky thing is the state championship games are scheduled for the week after. So a small group of about 12-16 of the best teams in the state will also have a championship game the following week. Our coaches assoc has been trying to convince the state athletic assoc. to begin the season a week or 2 earlier so the championship games are played before TGiving. Hopefully it'll happen soon.

So, how do the teams that don't make the playoffs procede? When does regular season end? Do they not pick up equipment until then? What about Winter sport athletes?

Here in Rhode Island if you dont make the playoffs they pair you with another non playoff team for a "non leage" game to fill the schedule. Unless we make the state championship we will have about 12 days off before the TG game.

Agree - we've had the tradition every year if we win we walk the mile back to the high school with the trophy. Cars beeping horns, walk into a couple establishments everyone is excited. Ours just had the 87th game. I think rivalries that have more tradition and history are more likely to see starters play, there's a lot on the line where as the younger rivalries of 1-2 decades doesn't have the same feel within the community (just my opinion). The history and stories I hear every year at hall of fame dinner that Tuesday before and seeing the seniors on Wednesday night with team mass and team dinner, it's a special week especially in our city. Most games are close, records don't matter, and weird stuff happens all the time. One year a 0-9 team tied a 7-2 one. This year, 3min in on 4 consecutive plays there were 4 turnovers (2 each team). We ended up losing game even though we were probably better team throughout the season, other team just had a couple plays that ended up turning into points and we couldn't score. Anything happens.

Weeks 1-7 are used to determine non-playoff and playoff (including position ranking) teams. Non-playoff teams play weeks 8, 9 & 10 in a non-playoff bracket. This works well for teams who are having a down year. They play teams with similar records. Playoff teams are placed in a 3-4 tier, single elimination bracket. The winners continue while the loser plays another team who has lost. Week 12 is the Thanksgiving rivalry game. Week 13 is the state championships. IMO the system has worked very well except for having the state title game after TGiving. Hopefully we'll be able to start the season a week earlier and have the title games before turkey day.
