Yes. Meyer and Herman are some of the worst. Had a buddy that was with Herman for about a week and quit because Herman was the biggest {censored} you could imagine to him and the staff. Not everyone is like that though. Good friend of mine interned under Meyer at Florida, has not 1 nice thing to say about it

Not that means they are inaccurate in their assessment of the disposition of the coaches (being A-holes) but I do think that some of it may be because they don't operate at the same level of intensity either.

Hes nowhere near the intensity of Meyer, polar opposite actually, but there was more to it than just that, I liken it to any job, you'll have bosses that you like, bosses you don't like, some of them are successful and all the staff loves them , some are successful and they hope his brakes fail . Ive also heard that from more than 1 person

I know a girl who was paid to go on Jerry springer PPV and pretend some dude was her baby daddy, take her clothes off, and yell a bunch. Odds are nearly every moment of these shows are scripted. I have a kid at Indy that played for me and graduated 2 years ago. Not scripted 100% real. "Coach, Coach Brown cusses everyone out his favorite word is MF'er he even cussed his own mom out on the practice field one day."

One thing I notice is that he threatens a lot but never does anything. Well he did kick the Michigan bounce back off.... Kingston the RB... so not entirely true.

Guys with him during a national championship run were just looking for a way out because they hated his guts. From what I have gathered he is absolutely awful to work for. However, I would do it in a heartbeat for 6 figures.... lol

Nobody really likes being yelled at, but stuff happens when emotions run high.
It has to be consistent, though. If you're going to chew out for small things, or only certain people, that's a bad way to go.
And you better be right in what you're choosing to yell about. If you're going to call a guy out on the sidelines for something, you better make damn sure you know what you're talking about. But that's just my personal experience coming through.
If you're just yelling in an attempt to assert dominance, then that's stupid and you need to not be as insecure. I worked under 3 guys, 2 of whom chose not to yell at asst. 1 guy did. The 1 guy who did, was doing so purely because he was someone with eternal "short man" syndrome. Had to be the loudest guy around, make sure everyone knew who he was.

. How common is this at the upper levels of football? really depends on if you need help with your headsets not sure what its like "today" but it isn't uncommon to be fired several times on the sideline during a season give me 150 a year and i might be ok with that

As others have said, it's a like a lot of things: is it being done in moderation or all the time, is it being done for a reason or just because you/the HC is throwing a temper tantrum, and does it have the intended effect? Nick Saban chews out assistants all the time because (1) he can, he's Nick Saban, (2) the assistants will take it (they are being paid a lot, get to coach at Alabama and it's great on the resume, (3) because usually (I'm told) there's a specific message Saban is trying to get across, and if saying it quietly doesn't work he's not afraid to yell it and (4) he (I'm told) will chew out assistants as a way to send messages to players (something Bill Walsh -- another guy who people said was not easy to coach for -- used to do a lot and talked about a lot). Indeed, Walsh said he'd frequently step into a drill if he saw players without good technique or some other issue and rip the coach in front of his position group, on the theory that it would actually bond the assistant and his players because they'd see their coach getting ripped for something they were responsible for and they'd often try harder for their assistants, so long as Walsh was picking out something real (and coachable).
Does that work? Probably, or at least a lot of the time. Are (3) and (4) more important... or (1) and (2)? Can you do (3) and (4) if you're not Nick Saban or Bill Walsh? Do a lot of coaches yell and scream just because they can, not because they have a point? Probably? Also, football is a game for people with thick skins, but I think we all know there's a lot of "football behavior" that probably wouldn't fly in just about any other environment (which might be good or bad).
The upshot is selective yelling ("ass chewings") is another tool in a head coach's toolbox to get people (players and coaches) to perform at the maximum of their capability, but I'm guessing that at least more than 50% of it is probably unnecessarily and often counter productive.

I have been fired 50 times in the last year. And as some of you might imagine, I have dog cussed, have had key boards thrown at me, and son other stuff.... And I am the coach who "doesn't know anything.." LOL! sounds like my first year varsity position in 2009....

IIRC, the guy Tuberville smacked was a grad assistant. Or, put another way, "university staff member strikes student." It’s definitely assault. And that kid can’t do anything about it because if you press the issue you are losing major connections and maybe sabotaging your career. You don’t want to be the grad assistant that did or said something stupid and then gets whapped and then makes a big deal of it. Then again after getting smacked you probably aren’t getting fired so it may give you leverage in some weird way. What if the kid claims he has a concussion after that. Then the university has two major news stories. Beyond the faculty strikes student issue the story is magnified with the CTE component. Truly hypothetical but not out of the realm of possibility. Even so, if I were the kid I would not want to get Tubbs fired I would have wanted to kick his ass.

Great post. Something that’s not being explored is that other sports have the same crap happen. We had a baseball coach at a small college in the state get recorded basically calling all of his team lazy pieces OS. The way I put it was tame. Football is just the big thing to talk about these days

Some of these major college coaches are just plain entitled and think they can act however they want. Of course they have the biggest salary and most pressure, but that doesn’t make it right to treat someone like $hit when they’re doing their best to help you.

Yeah I don't know if id still be employed if someone smacked my headset off especially on national TV, my biggest pet peeve was always those guys who think they can kick your ass just because they are your boss.

Good friend of mine interned under Meyer at Florida, has not 1 nice thing to say about it I've got a buddy who coached D2/D3 ball in Ohio and said when Tressel was there, it was an open invitation for anyone to come by at anytime. He said there would be 100 small college coaches working the camps, and Tressel got to know them (which I'm not saying is a mandate by any means) and they'd get free beer and food every day. Urban got there and basically locked the doors, and at camps would be on the field for 15 minutes to eval the guys they wanted, and then would go back to his office until the post camp talk. Wouldn't talk to anyone.. He also told me about a GA they had who had an interview at OSU for a GA gig.. Meyer came into the DC's office during the meeting to ask the DC something, and didn't even acknowledge the guy interviewing. He fortunately got another offer from Northwestern the same week, and decided that was a better fit.

Heard he not only refused to do the interview, but threw a reporter out of not just his office but wanted him escorted off campus for "daring to wear a blue shirt in his office" . One story I was told second hand so take it or what its worth, A coach around here coaches one of the top HS programs in the country, perennial powerhouse , was invited there for a camp and clinic, so they go up, when he arrived there Meyer is nowhere to be seen They get ready to attend practice, Meyer comes out , completely ignored him and his staff , he says OK I get it , so they sit and observe quietly, he said he walks around with what amounts to body guards, so he didnt approach until practice was over ...."Urb" a he calls him was standing there watching his players leave, with one other coach , so he walked over and felt he maybe should introduce himself and thank Meyer for bringing them up etc.... Meyer , told him to basically go away , and told him "look unless you have something to offer me (player wise) then deal with my assistants" the "guards" then ask the coach to step away and nobody saw him after that. He vowed to never deal with him again

I missed his shoulder, and grabbed his ... . It wasn't anything to it." I have watched multiple videos now. There is no way I am seeing Tuberville's perspective here. I don't remember any of this even occurring. Definitely puts perspective on the original topic on Jason Brown lighting his assistants up.

I got ripped a couple of times over the years. It's part of the business. I've been on both sides. I got my a$$ chewed a number of times in college, in practice, and in games. And I've also chewed crappy assistants out for not doing their jobs. The worst was a couple of years ago. I was the OC at a high school. We were playing in a 7 on 7 tourny. One of our coaches, a true Madden genius, had done a really crappy job from March on and it showed up in a game. He coached running backs and his kid botched a route and it led to a six the other way. I had tried to work with him privately, then in meetings, and then over beers. He insisted that he knew everything - the highest he'd ever coached was youth football. Anyway, during the tourny, he's sitting there big-timing with parents and what not. His kid is clueless, blows the route and I turn around and call him out in-front of everyone and rip him hard and raw.
The guy yapped and yapped about having his dignity assaulted and all. I told him what would happen if he did not get his act together and he did not listen. I even showed him a clip of me getting ripped by my header and he just laughed when I told that I would hold him accountable for his kid's screw up. Well, I did.
I see ripping as unpleasant, but it goes with the territory. When I got ripped I recognized how privileged I was to be where I was and that we only have 12 chances a year to justify what we do. Every minute counts. Act like it and you won't get your A$$ chewed.

if you ever read Urban Meyer's book the stuff written here makes sense. Football is my passion so I read a lot of books. I have read 2 saban books, 1 Bobby Bowden, Lombardi, ect. But Urban's book is all Me, Me, ME, Me....I read it after a book on Bear Bryant, and I was like "wow what a ego maniac".....

I used to think Jim Harbaugh was an a$%hole. Just the way he looked on the sideline and stuff. Never met him but just had that jerky look. The Amazon Series has totally changed my mind. He is 180 from what I thought, I still don't like Mich, but Jimbo is stand up...

Harbaugh doesn't come off as an {censored} to me either. Although, at times he seems aloof. Possibly he's in his own head with his thoughts because there are times when he comes across as just odd or different.

I worked for a couple of HCs that were not very nice and liked to display that in public. It didn't matter if it was practice or sidelines of a game. I like to believe it was because they were trying to hold us to high standards. I didn't appreciate it, though and felt it was unnecessary.
When I became an HC, I did not have one instance of that. There were a few tough private conversations that needed to be had, but nothing public. However, in reflection, I do see some merit in some good @$$ rippings. I should have done it to a few of the clowns I had around me. Again, not in public, but sometimes a guy has to be put in his place when he doesn't understand his role.
